It was a good win tonight. Any win is a good win but once again our midfield was very poor tonight. Got beaten in the stoppages & our ruckmen tonight were beaten imo. Laycock was poor but Hille was alot better in the 2nd half.

I dont think agree, Hille was one of the best players on the ground while Laycock had some good moments in the first half. Kruzer had a brilliant debut and Cloke was decent but Hille was the best out of the lot.

Midfield was well beaten early however got on top in last quarter when fitness came into it. I thought Laycock was important in the comback and Hille rises when needed. Anyone now if Stanton is carrying any injuries?? Doesn't seem to have the same running capacity. Also did anyone notice the commentary on ch10? Robert Walls is a deadset maggot

We were flat out smashed in the middle.

Talking was terrible. Often had two guys on one man and they got the ball out time and time again.

Made the game hard to watch, his constant bagging of Essendon makes him look pathetic, he should be banned from calling Essendon games

What game were you watching? We've got the worst ruck division in the competition IMO. Kruezer was a first gamer and Cloke is a hack and I thought they dominated hence the amount of centre clearances to Carlton. If the midfielders of Essendon can't get first crack at the pill at the stoppages it's tough to get a clearance.

We played the football we NEED to play for about a quarter. 10 minutes in the first quarter and the first 10 minutes in the last, that won't cut it against quality opposition.

Great win or lucky escape?!?

Congratulations Essendon, you just beat a team that hasn't finished higher than 11th in over 6 seasons and who hasn't won in the past 14 games. Hate to sound negative after a victory but IMO there aren't many positives...

Most promising aspect of tonight's game was Essendon's goalscorers... all 14 of them!

Yeah, I agree with that as well. Tend to think it was a rather lucky escape.

It was really great to beat Carlton .. which is a feeling we haven't had nearly enough lately. In that sense, it's a step forward. The last quarter was also excellent to watch.

However, we didn't play nearly well enough overall. There were also too many guys who were down and/or beaten by their opponents. It was a disappointing performance in general IMO.

To be fair, I think if Carlton were ever going to win the game it was going to be in the middle with the likes of Judd, Stevens & Murphy. They definately have the advantage over us in that area currently.

I think it says a bit that we could be beaten in the middle yet still win the game with 14 individual goalkickers...

Why be so negative after a good win?

That was the best game Carlton has played in a long time, and we still beat them with Hille missing most the second quarter off injured, losing Jetta who was leading our tackle count and still managed to kick 23 goals without Lucas or a real CHF. We still won 6 more hit outs than Carltons 3 ruckmen combined. Mcveigh was brilliant again tonight being B.O.G., Lloyd bounced back after being well held in the first half to finish with 4. Monfries and Lovett both had a good games coming back into the side after missing the first 2 weeks. Mcphee really took on his new role with his best performance this year, setting up goals and bringing the ball to the ground.

But yeah as you so not many positives...

It wasn't the rucks fault. The mids just couldn't use the ball well and get it out enough. Smashed in the set plays (Campo is our set plays coach: insert consipracy theorys here)

Other promising aspects:

McPhee doing his new role well. Lots of goals from open play.

100% agree.

Always good to beat Carlton, wonder what their board is talking about...

Haha nice one! :thumbsu:

Only problem is that Knights creates the plays, Campo only follows out instructions! ;)

IMO it was the rucks faults, they NEVER give first opportunity to our midfielders and haven't done since Hille was given senior ruck duties. I think Hille is good around the ground but I'd prefer Gumbleton or Neagle to do that work. We need a decent ruckman! Lost in the ruck to Blake <s******> last week, lost in the ruck to Cloke/Kruezer <s******> and lost against McIntosh in round 1 only our midfielders were so unbelievable they made the rucks look good! :thumbsu:

Agree to a degree. Did quite well tonight but aren't getting carried away with one game against average opposition. Let's face it, Waite is hardly a consistent footballer.

Good win by the bombers tonight! I cant f*ckin stand Carlton and the victory was made even sweeter in my opinion by the fact that the "fev" kicked a bag and you were killed in the middle but they still couldnt conjure up a win!!

Excellent win. I was a little worried about our confidence and approach to the game after last week.

As far as I'm concerned, Carlton smashed us in the midfield, clearences, Judd had 35 touches, Betts had 25 touches and Fevola kicked 8 goals. Carlton couldn't have played any better if they tried. Yet they stiil lost.

Lovett was sensational. :thumbsu:

:D

Lots any attempt at credibility with that. McIntosh and Hale were smashed by Laycock and Hille in round 1.

How bad was it when Walls was asked what he thought of Lloydy's goal in getting Essendon getting back into it? Wall's very sarcastically through gritted teeth replies, "Yeah, lovely kick". You could just tell it really hurt him to say that.

I actually thought we played quite well. Carlton played 10 times better than they did in both of their previous games so far this year. Lloyd was well held but our midfielders were good enough to kick goals which was really good. Mal had a shocker but Fev would've kicked 5 goals against anyone in the comp tonight.
