Academy Rorts - The 2025 Draft Thread

I watched the replay recently and was gutted that Carlton scored before HT. In my mind I'd had it as 60-0 at half time. That felt way more enjoyable.
I remember thinking as soon as Hippy looked inside to kick the ball from the wing, here goes the turnover for Carlton to score, and yep sure enough :)

Hi all, I come in peace.

Have been doing some research into how these bids will affect the draft order etc. See below for how a possible Dan Annable bid will effect the Lions

Draft picks;
12 (1,140 draft points)
30 (454 draft points)
34 (360 draft points)

12 + 30 + 35 = 1932 (pick 3 onwards)

12+30 = 1594 draft points (pick 6 onwards)

PickPointsDiscounted Points requiredEquation
22,481223312+30+34 = deficit in 2026
32,1781,96012+30+34 = junk pick
41,9621,76612+30+34 = 44 back
51,7951,61612+30+34 = 37 back
61,6591,49312+30 = 48 back
71,5431,38912+30 = pick 42 back
81,4431,29912+30 = pick 38 back

seems youre in a good place pick wise for a likely early bid on Annable. Just hope no bid at 1 or 2 comes in
Shouldn’t our first pick be pick 18?

From my calculations, all your picks (17, 37, 41, 46, 50) add up to the value of pick 6. You'd be hoping a bid comes in after that. Go with the minimum list changes and your laughing once again
Huh, good to know. We'll have to have more than the minimum list spots though because we'll be bringing 2 players in (Allen + #1 ruck) while needing at least 3 open list spots for the draft + more for draft picks.

Saints are a weird club. They just started a St.Kilda academy to re-engage kids from the Riewoldt, Montagna period. At the same time they're pushing for abolishing father sons. It'll be a delicious irony if one of those kids look good and at the same time rules change so Saints can't get them :)

Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Top draft prospects' July ranking
5 Daniel Annable
Annable has put up perhaps the most consistent of seasons of any draftee this year. The hard-at-it midfielder averaged 25 disposals and nearly five clearances a game for the Allies and was equally as effective for the Lions Academy in their Coates Talent League stint, averaging 29 and six tackles there after also being a ball-winner in the previous two seasons. Annable doesn't muck around – he knows what he's good at, he's clean with the ball, has a frame that would have him in AFL midfields already and is headed to Brisbane as an Academy player.

Looks like Geesu might slide which will be good for us, I really like his upside.

At the moment, I think it'd be surprising to see him on a list next year. He may need to take the Kiddy path of proving himself in the VFL next season to earn a list spot.

These guys have Annable at 2.

Not disputing it, but I would temper the media rankings of academy players this year by the fact the media has an incentive to put them as high as possible to create outrage from the VFL.

Just wait for the actual phamtoms to drop them lower, and then final draft results they will be lower again

But ofcourse under rating the draft as a whole.
But the Academy kids are great 🤔

Fox Footy: Have your draft questions answered in our live chat with Ben Waterworth below from 12pm
Question: Good to see Annable high in phantom drafts. Is there any other Lion academy players likely to be drafted?
Waterworth: I think if Annable was on Brisbane's list now Kaye, he'd arguably be in the 23. He's pretty much ready-to-go for mine. The other one clubs are interested in is Isaac Waller, who was basically the Allies' No.1 ruck during the champs. A 202cm left-footed ruck, caught the eye with his size and elite athletic ability.

I felt Will White was the third most impressive ruck on the team in our recent U16s matches, and it seems he was an overager there. I'm not saying he's a bad player, or that he doesn't deserve his place in this team, just that the 2026 class of talls in Queensland is clearly below the 2027 one.

there are no ruckmen in the 2026 draft class in QLD worthy of selection in the eyes of the academy, but they not looking hard enough. Jackson Jarvis hasn't grown at all.

However it is pretty mysterious how out of all the under agers, they went with Will White when there are several better options. (he is a talent, but he is probably also the least physically developed, so why throw him up against 17 year olds)

Last year they picked an over age ruck, so would have been the better option.

It's funny how academy focused it is though. Ash Prindable is playing Senior footy at Coorparoo and is 16 (turning 17 this year) and they have already realised their massive mistake overlooking his brother. But Coorparoo Colts somehow have 2 or 3 kids in the state u17 team ahead of him, including blokes that play the same position. There is also a kid called Charlie Slater killing it for Sherwood and they have Harry Thompson dominating, but I think his card was marked a while back.

My boy Raphael Geesu has fallen right off the radar, may be a good thing, take him late in the draft or as a rookie, could be a slow burn and need a year in the reserves before exploding on to the AFL scene.

Ripped his hamstring off the bone, not sure if he will play again in 2025. He and Harrison Bridge both were looking good but suffered big injuries at the wrong time
