Foley was on the radio this morning astounded that people wanted to know where Rann was. Along the lines of "if you were on holidays" ..HOLIDAYS .... they only sit something like 90 days a year wtf?????

Ah, there's a bit more to being Premier than sitting in Parliament. They don't just rock up there and decide policy on the spot. Most front benchers work 70 hours a week.

Irrelevant, this is a massive issue, Rann should be here. I have no issue with politicians deservedly taking breaks, but not while Rome is burning.

It's like Ken Henry dropping the RSPT bombshell, then pissing off on leave, it's a disgrace.

I almost pity Foley, he's being made the fall guy while Rann is off avoiding a lot of the flack.

Some very good news for SA and particularly Rann/Rudd is going to break in the next few months.

I'd wager very great amounts that good news Mike will be present for the announcement then!

Come on .... don't get sucked in by media hype .... Rome is hardly burning!

What do we have here? An estimated cost increase out on an large infrastructure project? Have any such projects come in under the budget the Govt of the day ever publicly stated? This applies to private as well as public projects. Variations, delays, cost increases .... happens all the time.

The fact that this is the biggest news story at the moment says the opposite to me. There actually is bugger all going on right now! The SANFL-SACA haven't even reached agreement yet and have another 3 months to go so what exactly would Rann add to the situation if he was here? If they can't reach agreement then the whole thing is off anyway regardless of whether it's $450m or $535m.

Mr Foley said such economic and social revitalisation was an opportunity that would be provided only by football-driven change, regardless of whether the AFL matches were played at a redeveloped Adelaide Oval or somewhere else in the CBD.
The critical issue was getting top-class footy played in the city centre. That would, in Mr Foley's words, give Adelaide the "complete package". "It's about people and having a destination," he said.

Sure about that? Seems to me that's exactly what has happened here.

As for 70 hours a week.. I'm sure some do ...
Some weeks I do too...but how much taxpayer money can I have to flit off overseas? And can I please go when the shit is hitting the fan at MY work?

Apparently he has gone away as The Member For Ramsay (?) so he will have to tender a report as well as the expenses he's incurred.

Should be interesting.

On the surface, yes, but the reality is, Rann/Foley have quite possibly lied and deliberately deceived the voters to win the Election.

Further, the centrepiece of their infrastructure plan has now possibly blown out to the point it may have doubled.

That's a pretty big issue.

Only if you haven't been living in Australia for the last 20 or so years

That's worse spin than the worst that Rann has been accused of! Doubled?!

Deceived the voters to win the election? Half the voters in this state honestly don't care about our new sports stadium.

You are correct. I dont think the majority of voters are swayed by any stadium debate, but they are swayed by lying and underhanded tactics.

Teflon Mike and memory-loss foley have whipped this dead horse for too long. They need to move on, admit they cocked it up, and look for the next liberal initiative to try to undermine with more hollow promises, deceit, spin and barefaced lying.

The self interest Foley has in his pet, failure of a project is plain for all to see. He is, yes is, stupid enough to believe AO will be Power's saviour. AO redev. serves both his political and personal agenda. How ironic it will be when his incompetent meddling, this project, lies and disrespectful excuses for lying, become Labor's exploding cigar..as if they haven't already. Start waving goodbye, Kev and Mike.

Port set to lose $4m this year. That changes the dynamics of this debate imo.

As much as you want to discredit the 'no AO will have no affect on Ports Crowds' its only going to grow louder.

Its going to be an intersting next few months

Port are not sustainable regardless of where they play. There is no point even including them in any discussions on the pros and cons of AO v AAMI. Everyone from the AFL to the SANFL to the SACA knows this.

I find that hard to believe as surely this state can afford two AFL clubs.

Being able to afford, and Port being able to stand on their own two feet are entirely different.

No one honestly believes that AO will be their saviour. Wait til the 6 month gloss wears off and then their fans will bitch about going all the way into the city, they will then be sitting in a stadium full of red plastic seats, which they will complain about, then a 3rd of the AO will be covered in bay covers.

Your business model can't be 'give us cheaper rent'. They are putting all their eggs into a basket that will probably not see greater stadium returns, and could see the price of ticketing escalate thus causing less of their few show up. Prices to run a club, run a stadium, cost of memberships will only ever go up, not go down. The gap between what is needed and what they can achieve will only grow. Fremantle for all their wonderous stadium deals were not and would not make money with 16K - 20K coming through the gates.

They simply don't have the support to be sustainable. A decent short to mid-term decision to enter the AFL, they are not the long term choice that should of been made. All that has happened is the SANFL (with full AFL endorsement) have created another Fitzroy.

And it's not their fault. No individual SANFL club has the numbers and money behind it to be a successful and financially viable prospect long term. Not Port, Not Norwood, Not Sturt or a combination thereof.

Adelaide Oval's heritage status in doubt

ADELAIDE Oval has lost its historic value, becoming a "generic universal stadium" that should be stripped of its state heritage protection, says the National Trust.

This is good news in one way as it will allow the scoreboard to be removed and have a grand stand where the hill currently is. I think if we win the 2022 World cup the Feds would pay the extra for the stand to be built. the Feds are going to inject $250 mil from memory so that would cover another stand.

aneale thats bullshit.

Port were turning a profit only a few years ago, something has changed at Port Adelaide and that is there brand. They are no longer seen as what they were. Which was competitive etc. Chocco will go and hopefully for there sake someone will bring that back to port, then they will get the crowds back.

But they wont ever reach the numbers they did have, we cant and we played some of the best football we have ever played last year.

A move to AO I think will have an impact on crowds, its a more central and accessable location.

So we can't build a moderate high rise within the CBD because it would look incongruous next to a space taking stone sottage, but the National Trust will strip heritage protection just to make do McLachlan a personal favour.

Yes, that's our National Trust for you

tbh, it no longer deserves it, the scoreboard and the trees are the only thing of value in there now. the Board can be moved anywhere and still retain its heritage listing.

You could make it a gate, something you walk through at the Main entrance.

Was just speaking to my Dad about this issue and he came up with the same suggestion. Great idea and would make for a very unique entrance!

I think so too, you can put messages up on the board or just make it a real feature. Lets face it its the first thing anyone thinks about when the AO is mentioned.

Thats the most thorougly inaccurate reporting of heritage laws in this state i've ever seen. Disgrace

Theres no doubt our major issue is growing crowds. The club had the chance to go a long way towards fixing this last year but wimped out. Haysmen and Duncanson may be smart business people, but they screwed the pooch on the coaching issue.

The problem is Macca that is always going to be the issue. What if they had replaced Choco with Laidley? A man more obstinate, less talented and certainly not able to present Port to the media in any great way.

There is always going to be a bad patch (and you are not in a bad patch with 1 flag from 2 GF's in the last 5 seasons) or a coach that the supporters lose faith in. After your first year in, the crowd average dropped 4,000 and never recovered. You didn't average 30,000 for either of your grand final years. You are never going to get a stadium return that will make Port viable with a 30,000 difference between capacity and attendance.

We all know whats going to happen first year at AO, I suspect crowds will be bumper, but then it will settle once the novelty of a new stadium is gone. Everyone is grossly overestimating the affect AO will have on a struggling team. It's not like there will be 11 Friday night games for thousands of neutrals to transcend upon the stadium after work like at the G. I see 2 to each club at most.

Port dance way to close to the edge, whilst the AFC can absorb attendance drops to some level, Port simply cannot as it doesn't have the core support required in this day and age. They're a bit like Sydney, as the old adage goes, Sydney are always 2 bad years away from financial ruin. That's no way to survive.

I said the coach was an issue two years ago on your board. It caused me several infractions... I said the same on the SANFL board ..infracted upon yet again ...I self excluded myself from the Port board because back then you couldn't say anything against Williams as the Mod LOVED him.
My last infraction was a post that I basically paraphrased what a Port supporter said ..Bam ...red card. Gave up.

This is a true story ... Friends of mine have put their tickets on hold because they WILL not go while Williams is coaching. Friends of theirs have done the same. Where you played would NOT be an issue with these guys.

A non-Williams coached Port would bring back a lot of people. A lot!

It would start off as a "Thank God" factor and work up to a "what's this guy gonna do" situation.

As long as he is there, the Gold Passes and the 119 hang over the club like a crepe.

Moving to Adelaide Oval is not what will save your club in the short term.
