Even if the the bid is at pick 3 they will need to trade 9 for +700 points.

For example.

They would need to trade 9 to West Coast for picks 14, 19 and 32 to make it work and I doubt West Coast do that.

Agreed. I think we'll have a tough time, but then again, I thought that a couple of years ago with the 2023 draft, and we handled that with plenty to spare, so I'll trust the club to get it done.

I do think it'll be tougher under the new points system though.

Easy enough to do 14 + 32 for 9

Then turn 14 into 2 2nds and get the points that way

Which two seconds and who trades them.

Maybe Essendon with pick 22 and 24. That would cover it.

The picks will need to be early seconds and then teams might balk as they can probably get similar players at 14 as they can at 22-26 and they get two swings there.

Lets say Essendon make that deal due to us having the two academy kids.

So in essence Gold Coast have traded 9 for picks 22, 24 and 32 which still leaves them 200 points short of a bid at pick 3.

Gold Coast are going to need to get creative as well.

If Uwland is picked first they will need to use all of 9, 12 and 19 to match (and will get a pick 27-29 back)

Then they will only have picks 27 and 29 to match a bid for Patterson which likely comes before five as well.
Uwland won't be pick 1. When was the last time there was a pick 1 that hardly played in their draft year?

Bids are often later than expected on Big Footy. Possible Annable is bid on before Uwland also.

The Suns will get cleaned out of points this year, but it doesn't really matter so much as this is the last big year of academy players for a while.

Sure they could find a way to turn 24 into 2 30s picks and make it up

The biggest issue with free agency compo is the top clubs paying nothing for players.

How to help bottom 8 sides rebuild quicker, including sides stuck around 7 to 10.

The worst spot to be is a mid table side and that is why we have such a gap between the bottom and top teams.

Clubs need to be smarter.

I would want WC to bid on the GC/Bris academy prospects as early as possible. Woe is us not having 900 first round picks and all that but if either Qld club or both can be wiped out of the 2026 first round by going into deficit (pick 18 worth) that's an advantage to a team that will odds on be bottom 4 again next year.

The team getting the FA should lose their equivalent pick to whatever compo pick is generated.

For example, Brisbane lose their first this year (and are not allowed to trade it prior) for Allen this year, as he will gernerate a first round compo pick. Then they would lose Annable, or be forced to trade someone out to gets the points.

100% agree they should bid early. It's supposed to be a competitve industry the AFl, often doesn't seem like it though.

My suspicion is other teams are worried about "payback", especially in this era of everyone getting NGA players.

WC should be after the Suns picks. Don't even need to be dicks about it, the Suns will happily trade them for more points. Which suits WC as they need as many first round picks as they can get, not second and third rounders.

Realistically Brisbane shouldn't lose or gain anything other than a player and cap space for signing Allen.

If they have say $1m cap space going into 2026 and Allen is a free agent what does pick 15-25 have to do with that?

The failure of free agency stems from the AFLPA having too much power. Salaries aren't public, the salary cap is rubbery and players decide when and where they get traded.

What should happen is that Allen leaving opens up cap space for WC. If there are no equivalent players wanting to sign then we enter the race to take on contracts clubs don't want in exchange for draft assets. But the AFLPA won't allow it.

I think with the old system there was a sense of resignation that players are going to their clubs anyway so why bother. Time will tell if changing the points index has any impact. It's set up to make it look like Daicos, Darcy, Walter etc. are in play but everyone knows they aren't.

It's a dud system because why is it up to WC to determine how many points Uwland or Annable are worth? We might actually want one or both at #1 but that's not really why clubs bid and if they are that good their clubs aren't going to baulk at paying 2500 points instead of 2000 or whatever when the alternative is going to the draft at pick 15 or something.

WC may have 1, 2, 15, 19, 33. Gold Coast 8, 11, 18, 26, 29, 44. What are we chasing exactly? I'm happy for the club not to bid on anyone at 1 or 2 in exchange for favourable pick swaps.

I’d argue it’s that 16 teams not involved in the transaction lose draft points/pick position in a deal that has nothing to do with them.

It will depend on how many players GC want to take this year. Uwland and Patterson will be dead certainties, but after that, there is no guarantee we pick up Addinsall or Coulson.

We probably end up picking up 1, but may need to trade some of our future picks for currency this year, which makes sense as our academy over the next couple of years is trending to having a lot less AFL level players.

The discounts allow teams to pay a fair price. Removing it actually makes them pay more than a fair price.

Can anyone really say matching a bid at pick 1 with pick 2 isn't paying a fair price? Because a club can't do that without getting a discount.
No it's a cheap price. Most years you'd have to pay a lot to trade from pick 2 to pick 1 - it's why there's a significant points gap between the two picks.

We do, this years, next years and the year after. I said it’s likely I’m delusional. But everyone was surprised a few times with us.
LOL
The 2027 draft will be the most compromised in recent history with Tassie coming in and you'll likely be needing plenty of points for father/sons Rodan and Salopek if they continue their current trajectory.
And possibly big points in 2026 for Dougie Cochrane if his application for NGA status is signed off.

Dont forget Zemes Pilot also in 2027 I believe (but you probably know more about how this young guy is likely to go)

That said, this guy you are responding to is actually a Freo fan, not Power in this instance

Freo leading a bid to get rid of the academy + FS until Round 2 in the draft. What this would mean is if Eagles take Zeke Uwland at pick 2 then Gold Coast have to accept it. On the other end if Eagles bid for Beau Addinnsall at pick 19 then Gold Coast can match that bid and get him for say pick 30 instead

Seems logical so I doubt it happens. Its also a bit late for such changes anyway. The horse has well and truly bolted

Assume this includes NGA's also?

Don't mind it tbh. No way the VFL clubs will allow it to include FS though.

Do you have a link for Freo going for this?
