Trade the #1 pick for more top 12~ picks then?

Ah. Is that the tactic from the VAFL maybe?

Keep shovelling top access to the expansions states.

Appease the Vics with father son access that other states cant match in quantity and quality.

SA and WA. Meh, they are wealthy clubs who can stay profitable even during a rebuild. So no draft assistance needed. So by being forced into splitting top picks the best Vic kids stay in Victoria.

AFL want more ratings in Qld and NSW and winning does that.

I deserve a brand new tin foil hat for that.;):drunk::drunk::drunk:

You know what they say about the difference between a conspiracy theory and the truth being about 12 months…

Said it before the reverse allocation of picks is not equalisation or if it is it doesn’t drive fast ladder climbs as we have seen. The prime example is the difference between eagles and the premiers this year is pick 1. After that premier 18, eagles 19, Premier 36, eagles 37 etc. if you weighted the picks more towards the worst teams you wouldn’t need priority picks they would essentially get them each year. I floated drawing the line at finals, logic being that everyone wants to play finals and you wouldn’t tank for say pick 9/19 instead of 21 given it’s finals and the cash windfall that generates for clubs. I might be wrong and a different distinction might work better that’s just my idea. So this year eagles get 1/11, north 2/12 up to dogs 9/19 then Sydney start the finalists at pick 20 up to the premier at 28. Then the existing system reverse order 29-46, 47-54, 55-72.
Regardless of how you do it if you are a bottom club you have 3 ways to improve your list. Draft is key so having 1 pick better than the premiers each year means it will take a long time. Free agency hardly happens for lower clubs given the move normally triggered by a desire for success. Cap space your biggest asset not yet allowed to be used except with players attached which makes it far more difficult.
Look at pies and lions - 7-8 first rounders plus 9-10 free agents that takes a long time to accumulate and that’s if you get it right. Something has to change if we don’t want clubs languishing.

Clubs don't want equality - they want Premierships. If they wanted a quick bounce to be competitive they'd trade pick one for 3 decent players.

Essentially, if the AFL really wants to give clubs a boost with bonus picks - give them early picks, but don't let them take the pick to the draft or anything that they trade the pick for. Make them trade them for senior players.

This is the fairest way to fix this :

no father /son ....
no academy players....
no PP
no more future picks...
teams just go back to getting the pick on where they finish on the ladder but are able to trade picks they have for that season only..

therefore all players are accessable to all clubs

l wonder how clubs and supporters would like this...
Why no F/S picks?? There are hardly any with most clubs having 0 and it’s the only romance in football.

The idea of an ablett at Sydney or a pavlich at Richmond or a hodge at north Melbourne is just seriously wrong.

Leave the romance in footy

A Pavlich at Richmond? Huh

F/S should be removed. At the very least the 20% discount should go.

It is possible a Hodge ends up not at Hawthorn anyway.

You did have Ablett at Gold Coast so it shows what he thinks of the father/son rule...If players want to use it then they should stay at the club and not leave....Also if another club picks up a player of father/son then that player could always return to that club after their first contract finished or get traded to it...

There was an Ablett playing at Sydney..

The discount isn't the problem, it's being able to pay for the price with 5 junk picks & the value is out. They need to overhaul the system so picks are valued market rates and you can pay the price with a maximum of 2 picks, the deficit comes off your next first rounder the following year if you're short.

Same with academies too. It would be less of a problem if it wasn't possible for GC to have a spare pick 4 while gaining 3 guns.

Get rid of free agency compo or make the club getting the free agent pay it with a discount.

The draft will be always compromised.

What needs to happen is too reduce the compromise.

1. No discount
2. Only use 2 picks for matching a bid
3. Fourth round picks are not included in the points system
4. Father and Son changed to 150 games
5. Free agency compo is middle of each round.
6. Any player manager involved in draft tampering are ban for two years
7. Any player involved in drafting tampering are ban for one year
8. Any club involved in drafting tampering are banned for two drafts

The points system already has a discount for top picks between 25% to 50% and getting another discount on top of discount is criminal.

Why do people seem to think that the draft is some incredibly pure instrument that should not have its influence adulterated in any way shape or form?

I think most people see a particular form of manipulation that they personally think is particularly corrupt and get so angry they just say "get rid of all manipulation".

It is a quite understandable reaction. I have felt that way myself at times (before I remember how foolish it is).

This actually helps you out a bunch as teams will be using multiple late picks to match bids.

Pick 81 could jump up a fair bit
Should be worth pick 28 by the time everyone is done

Should we get rid of the salary cap too while we are at it? Go full Manchester city and let the pies buy the best players form smaller clubs each year?

The answer to your question is equalisation.

You didn't understand what I meant. I'm all for a draft and salary cap. I just don't get why anyone thinks that a draft without concessions is an incredibly fabulous equalisation measure that can't be altered by things life father son or academy concessions. There seems to be a starting point that a draft without concessions is a perfect instrument and that altering this perfect instrument is awful.

Yep,
Either way, they should be paying for players closer to value. No discount or revalue the pick currency to market rates.

Its not but what we've got is a confusing mess that is so far away from the starting point that it's actually more uneven than ever.

Academies have stuffed it & within those you have ever changing rules being shifted around each season when it suits.
