God damn it, I knew it!In other news;
Water is wet!
They are playing like a club that expects they will get handouts if they play terribly.Care to wager on that ? And no another 2nd rounder is not sufficient enough compo for a club in North's position for so long

Not just the draftThe AFL should give Adelaide a PP for not being a leach on the draft like North have been.
Or Judd's kids in a Carlton jumper.....The F/S and Academy discussion is fascinating and there have been some good discussions in here.
As far as North go, I think it would be farcical to give them unfettered access to a kid who is already going to be selected regardless and furthermore, which would completely break the rules set in place about NGA selections and the first round. You either have rules in place, or you don't.
NGA academies shouldn't be for kids who are already on the path and talented; it should be about investing in young men who rightly or wrongly, are adjudged to be at a disadavantage when it comes to their prospects of playing AFL footy. Be that socio-economic realities, cultural barriers... whatever.
As far as my opinion on F/S and academies goes, I'd see a change in the rules there so there is less manipulation by clubs. You should have to use a selection either in the same round as when your player is bid on or something like within 15 picks for instance to make up the points. No more of this hoarding crappy picks and the points they come with.
I am a HUGE fan of the nostalgia around F/S picks and would like to keep it in our game, it sets us apart from other sporting codes and I personally love it, even though Carlton haven't had a great go of it. Personally, I wouldn't want to see Nick Daicos drafted by anyone other than the Maggies (even though he was a huge Carlton fan), just like I wouldn't want to see Jack Silvagni wearing an Essendon jumper (shudders) or Will Ashcroft drafted to North.
As a Freo supporter who has gotten nothing forever and is forever mediocre but not s**t enough to warrant help I'm torn. I truly like F/S's as something different and magical but I'm tired of the bottom teams getting shafted and their is such an insane benefit in a club that is in finals / competing getting a top 4 draft pick at the practical price of a pick in the teens that is creates a massive imbalance.
I think the whole thing needs a sweeping overhaul and my proposals would be:
- For the foreseeable future, GC and GWS get universal access to their academy talent BUT at a limit of only one in the first round each year. Anything more just completely *s the draft. I dont like other teams getting a leg up but if we want these clubs to grow and be self-sustaining then I dont see any other way.
- F/S's should be the same except with the added restriction that a finals side can not match a top 4 bid (might need tweaking with extra teams but you get my drift). The bottom teams getting ****ed on talent is s**t.
- Remove discounts and/or make it that a team must have a pick in the round they want to match the bid. No more matching a pick 8 with 4 picks after 30.
- All other NGAs only applying to after 40s picks is dumb. There is some real good that can come from NGAs in putting effort and time into rural kids or kids from different backgrounds that would struggle otherwise. Does this get basically abused with some questionable eligibility criteria? Sure, but I'm willing to pay that price. All other club academy / NGAs brought up to matching after pick 20
- No more AFL bullshit pick assistance and meddling ever. Find another way, stop ******* other teams in the draft
Sorry Sydney and Brisbane peeps, I just dont think you need assistance anymore, the game is strong enough in your area AND your clubs are strong enough that I dont see any reason you need different rules to WA or SA teams.
I agree. I can't stand the compromised drafts. Look at the dogs, pies and Brisbane. 3 teams that are basically living at the top due to the father/son rule alone. As a Freo supporter who has gotten nothing forever and is forever mediocre but not s**t enough to warrant help I'm torn. I agree. it's like pick 1 is a father/son. Club says "no worries guys, pick 24,29,37,39,43, 56, 68. The points match".For father sons and academy, keep them but get rid of the discount along with reworking how picks are valued. The top picks should be worth more than they are compared to lower picks.
I’d also make it so teams have to either match with a pick in the first round if the bid is in the first round or have already taken a pick in the draft.
Means teams either have to trade up or stay in the first round and can’t just match with junk picks.
The entire draft is compromised every year with weak as water rules around trading. “I miss my Mum but will only go to club x “ being the biggest rort of allNorth should get s**t and the draft should be uncompromised. No more academes and father sons.
Just get rid of the cap.The entire draft is compromised every year with weak as water rules around trading. “I miss my Mum but will only go to club x “ being the biggest rort of all
Get rid of academy’s, father Son, club nomination ( should be state) and 3rd party payments ( include them in the cap).
Your Eagles are so rich that the Vics heads would explode if that came to fruitionJust get rid of the cap.
Only so many 1 dollar pubs can be bought until it becomes pointless
Was always in our NGA, just wasn't approved by the AFL to be selected yet.The rules changed for a reason. They didnt get rid of compensation picks to now bring them back in when one fan base is crying for them. As for sanders (not even in norths nga academy yet), thats looking like one of the biggest ports ever.

brisbane have been top 4 since 2019I agree. I can't stand the compromised drafts. Look at the dogs, pies and Brisbane. 3 teams that are basically living at the top due to the father/son rule alone.
I'd abolish the father/son rule all together. After the dees get Kalani White of course (Jeff White's son). lol.
I've never understood why clubs get a discount for picking up a father/son. If a club wants the romance of a father/son player then they should be paying overs what they're worth, certainly not a discount.
Brisbane isn't a great example there but the pies and dogs do have a wild amount of father son and academy players on their teams.brisbane have been top 4 since 2019
we have only had a father/son player on our list since 2023
what absolute drivel you post as per usual

Agree. He should be playing for the Lions.Or Blakey in a Swans jumper
Yeah. This one would have pissed me off if I was a north supporter. We have Boston Everett as a F/S and he is in the Gold Coast academy. Il spew if he stays up thereOr Blakey in a Swans jumper
