There's only been one of age and he's VFL standard (and that's with the neppo factor of he plays for the Swans VFL).
Hear me out, maybe the Swans academy actually developed Blakey and he wasn't going to be AFL standard without them? So he wasn't always going to be playing AFL

I'm not arguing anything to do with Blakey, daresay every year there's dozens of f/s players that aren't up to it.

Dogs fans should not complain about North Melbourne very likely to get either a PP or band 1 compo for Ben Mckay when they get JUH on a now closed NGA loophole that otherwise would have seen the Dees able to claim Mac Andrew from their own academy/zone.

Clubs and fans combined were unhappy with NGA and PP’s. Of course fans are going to be unhappy for those rules to be doubled back on now. Doesn’t matter what team is getting it.

The whole league is compromised on so many levels.

The AFL is an entertainment provider and the players are entertainers. Every decision made is to maximise profits at the cost if integrity.

Either way, should North receive or not receive assistance this year, it will be based on sound feasibility studies.

Il be spewing. We could have have had McKenzie last year, traded out our first round pick and had two this year. He was actually in our academy. Unlike sanders

In fairness to any supporter it’s fine to be miffed about anything that happens. I remember being equally annoyed at pretty much every instance of assistance but once done, it is done.

To make some points…

Sanders. We’ve not manipulate anything here. We’ve asked for his indigenous status to be accepted for our NGA academy and it has been. We can match if he makes it to 40. However, the AFL never scrapped club assistance, they just a few years ago ended the thing where you get picks under 5 wins. The last big instance of assistance was that huge packet the GC got that also included (probably the lesser of the package compared to the early picks and mid first round picks) pre-listing players in their academy. North has used that particular precedence and will request the same in lieu of impacting the draft with first round picks.

McKay. North doesn’t know his plans. Free agency compo is handed out before trade week, 1-2 weeks after the AFL convenes on assistance. There are two known elements to compo here… salary and age. The McKay twins were days off being ineligible for their draft so they are as young as it gets for free agency. This is one known factor. Secondly is salary. There is nothing stopping a club from offering him 850 for 3 years and restructuring his contract in year 4 to avoid having to trade. Again precedent (and benefit) when the Bombers lost Daniher.

The point being if North pull these off only one of these can be considered assistance and even then it pales compared to how other clubs have fared previously. And that’s not to say it should be supported but it should be considered the least that could happen.

This is a perpetual motion thread that is best summed as this.... shit if it's not your club getting it. Sit back in dead silence and rejoice if it is. Objections are real hypocrisy

JUH was part of geelong zone and geelong put heaps more work into him. Then AFL changed the zones and the dogs get him.

The afl did that in the 80s with the saints zone. Took the Mornington peninsula off us and gave it to the hawks. Netted the hawks Mathews, derm and dunstall. What could of been 😳

So, pick 1 or 2, some juju to get McKay band 1 compo (pick 2 or 3) and some juju to get the NGA kid. OK with me.

This no more compromises the draft than about 20 other things that have come before, FS pre Hawkins, NGA pre Jamarra, academies, PP assistance, all the way back WA/SA entry concessions and before that zones.

Dunstall played Teal Cup for Queensland; Matthews was recruited from the Mornington peninsula but began his senior career at Hawthorn in 1968; and Dermott Brereton is the only one that you can claim was from the Mornington Peninsula in the 1980s. Oddly, enough if Dermott were around today with the national draft, he would probably qualify for an NGA as both his parents were born in Ireland.

Don’t take the actual date as gospel. But the afl did take that zone off the saints which netted the hawks multiple flags. Then gave it back to us.

No argument there, it was a fantastic recruiting zone for Hawthorn. You missed my favourite, Chris Mew from the Rosebud FC - the player Alan Jeans would pencil in first at CHB every week.

So the 2 main tenets are how do you access players and how do you secure them.
Access
I think you have to keep father son it is unique and lovely to see the tradition continue.
Academy I think the first round should only be available to expansion sides for their first 20 years. Swans and lions should be at least moved to after round 1 and the remaining clubs should be after round 2 (pick 40 so arbitrary). Long term
All should be moved to only be able to match from round 3 onwards. Expansion sides get some time after round 1 to match before aligning with the rest of the competition.
Matching
First no discounts priority access benefit is enough.
I would limit the number of picks that can be used to match to 2 and first pick match has to be in the same round. That means if suns want to match Walter at 2 they can use pick 5 and then worst case 29. If they don’t have enough points in 2 picks they trade for it or forego the player. This year would force the suns to stockpile early picks or release one or 2 of those players to the open pool.
I think the Northern academy’s should retain current access to players and here is why

The vast majority of players that get drafted come from Victoria and if they get drafted interstate they have 10 clubs knocking on their managers door with offers. All the player has to say is I miss my Mum and they generally get to the club of their choice. This is an advantage to the VIC clubs ( certainly the bigger ones) with 3rd party deals outside the cap boosting earnings.

Academy’s should remain the same until the balance of players come from outside Victoria or 3rd party deals get counted in the cap and the trading rules change to state not club. Players may think twice about moving if they end up at a smaller club with no Frank Costa to fill your pockets

Which is why moaning about F/S is ridiculous.

16 clubs all have equal chance of striking it in the lottery and the romance around it makes it worth keeping. GWS and GC will also start geting eligible players in 10 years or so but perhaps the academy off sets that.

The way that Brisbane and Sydney get both freebies through the academies AND father sons is a bit rich though.

As long as only 4 clubs are allowed priority access to top talent, the draft is always comprimised.

How many clubs have a chance of winning the homesick lottery? Odds stink for NSW and QLD clubs

Which is why northern academies are so important, to get more local talent on lists rather than Vic kids. Important also in growing the game in those states.

The last couple of years my annual winter trip to Queensland has started to see lots more AFL goalposts on school ovals, don't reckon I saw any a decade ago, so good things being done here in Queensland

The Vic Homesick Lottery heavily favours the bigger Melbourne clubs and of course Geelong with their Costa Living Allowance. North would love to have winning tickets in the lottery, but doesn't of course
