News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Nah I think it can be tweaked first.

Get rid of the discount for starters.
yep. The ability to jump over the top and "match" the bid is the actual benefit, and it's a big one. You get priority access to your father/son or whatever.

why is there then an extra benefit in the form of a discount? if anything it should be the opposite.

The point system is only one of the issues.

Issue 2 is the top end of the draft is too heavily compromised.

Issue 3. Nsw and qld get the most players
Vic clubs get the 2nd most players
Wa and sa get screwed again.

I think it can be fixed, as long as picks allowed to match is limited to 2, points curve adjusted, discount reduced to 5%.
I think scrap Vic, wa,SA NGA academies.

Oh okay. What about players from their home state in total?
I think nsw , qld, SA and wa are pretty close when it comes to home grown talent on there list.

Vic clubs have the big advantage.

My point is not to stop the nsw and qld academies, maybe the top 5 or top 10 should be protected but we can't forget about the sa and wa clubs.

You THINK? Would it kill any of you to do the smallest bit of number crunching before you make these claims?

Pffft. Who needs number crunching? Pretty easy to see.

Teams who have been playing finals consistantly and grand finals recently still have top 4 lists still getting access to top kids at a discount.

Where other clubs are rebuilding get nothing.

So how much longer should grand final teams get handouts before they are backed off or at least other teams get equal access?

Man, argue what you want about equity, it's not even close that NSW is producing or has produced the same quantity of footballers as WA or SA. Stay focused.

For clubs that don't appear to have any retention issues and, in fact, attract more trade targets than other interstate sides(especially interstate players) I'm wondering why Brisbane and Sydney supporters are so adamant they need special access to an academy?
Because even if those players in the academy would have been in the open draft (assuming they would have nominated), Sydney would have had access to one of them with reaching half a round or more. Brisbane about the same. Still a lack of access to home state talent if there wasn't bidding.

As I've said on repeat, if the Eagles or whichever team wants to spend 30 years building their list from 90% interstate players with almost zero access to home state talent in the first two rounds, I'm happy for them to have an academy in an area where footy is the second or third preference for sport and there are no talent programs or pathways.

If the bidding system is fixed, the massive advantage the Swans have will disappear.

That's fine, I think most will be ok with that.

It's more the fact that their president claims they're the biggest club in Aus, whilst their supporters think they desperately need the academy to be viable.

Pick ONE.

Even if your strawman about what supporters think was accurate (or what Pridham said), you're talking about two different views from two different groups. They both have chosen one.

Because they give us a leg up on the rest of the competition.

Well, it's ok if people are honest about it.

When the AFL says it needs to 'grow' the game in QLD(for example) and Brisbane already has 2 of the 3 biggest Auskick centres in the entire country, the benefits could be tones down a tad.

I wish Auskick participation rates actually translated in to lots of gun draft prospects up here. Sadly we aren't seeing that yet.

Tis strange how Brisbane have gotten nothing out of their academy comapred to Sydney. Do you know if it’s just never been prioritised / run well or just potluck?
