News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Elaborate? What does dads age have to do with the process?
I’m assuming his parents were overseas four weeks before he was born

So had he been born overseas then his son would qualify for NGA

Mind you I didn’t think women that close to term in their pregnancy were allowed to fly (might not have been a rule back then)

Correct, if the family had remained overseas, he’d classify.

Ultimately the AFL is to blame for this mess.

If they had fixed this issue 10 years ago and had teams paying appropriately for academy/f+s then it wouldn't be anything like the disaster it is now.

The new bidding system is a huge step in the right direction but it isn't going to stop the complaining, because the AFL have allowed the resentment to fester for so long.

Whether anyone has the guts to admit it or not, the 2025 AFL draft will be the worst of all time. As a Eagless fan its a shame that the scraps we will have left to pickup are what they are. Im inclined to trading pick 1 away for say Ned Moyle and Alex Davies from Gold Coast at this rate.

The top 5 players id take are all academy linked so cant see much value in holding pick 1

People are just pretending that the points update isn't a massive improvement. It's not quite there yet, but it's far better than the points they assigned per pick until now.

Spoken by someone who benefited from the old system more then most

The system is a joke and is still a joke today

With Academy picks at cut prices, the Northern States should win the premiership for the next 20 years or so.

even if they completely fix the draft you still have 10-15 years of some teams built on defunct rules, you'll be hearing complaining until the daicos/ashcrofts retire.

Apparently Port Adelaide are going to be eligible to get prospective number 1 pick in 2026 Dougie Cochrane as he is found to have some aboriginal heritage just recently

This is becoming a joke now,

Players can be a part of our NGA but it still doesn’t mean we get rights to them.

Unlike other states, SA clubs don’t get priority access to metropolitan kids at the draft but they can still participate in our NGA program.

Access rules would have to be adjusted in SA in order for us to get draft rights to him even.

We get screwed by this in SA and it makes no sense why they have made it this way.

My idea for competitive balance, would be all the academy and NGA’s drafts are taken from clubs however keep these academy’s to be run by AFL but have a financial bonus system for those running each academy that they get a payment to there salary if player gets drafted from there academy.

This will financially incentive people running these academy to produce draft talent and then makes the draft no longer comprised and I would make Father son 200 games for a club

You've got this one wrong. It changed when they limited access to outside top 40 for NGA. All the major SA populations are zoned with access to one of the clubs - it's only desert that isn't zoned.

WA should end up the big winners from the respective NGA zones now including access at any point in the draft, with SA clubs a little behind and Vic clubs in last place in terms of Academy likelihood of recruiting success.

I cannot find anything that this has changed and it has been a point of discussion for years for SA prospects. If you can find somewhere that confirms access to metropolitan areas, please share as I cannot find anywhere the AFL have confirmed this.

It was discussed when NGA access was changed to 40+ however there was never confirmation that metropolitan access was implemented as we then entered the Covid years and the discussion seemed to disappear.

This is from last year and it appears the remain.

“In a further twist to Cochrane's appeal, he would need the AFL to go through and make a change to the zoning around encompassing the metropolitan areas of Adelaide for the Next Generation academy.”

This is from 2019

“Clubs were told it is likely Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle will gain priority access to indigenous prospects in metropolitan regions after pick No.40 of the NAB AFL Draft.”

Then we never heard anything again on this…. It was discussed but never actually implemented the change. Very convenient.

I'm not looking for it, but it changed. Borlase went to Adelaide as an NGA - he was very much from metropolitan Adelaide.

Well lucky for you, I’ve spent plenty of time looking for you and it hasn’t changed. There isn’t a single quote or reference that the change was actually implemented. My theory is that was due to Covid and it was placed on the back burner and not a priority for the AFL.

As the rules currently are, we don’t get access to Metropolitan NGA players.

Borlase was drafted as a Cat B rookie. Players can still participate in our NGAs however we don’t get draft rights (discounts, ability to match) for Metropolitan kids. If Borlase was a first round talent, he wouldn’t be at the Crows.

NGA zones from the AFL website. Which part of that is excluded?

Reporting on NGA rules is shit, but James Borlase was only eligible as a Cat B rookie becuase he was an undrafted NGA eligible player and he is very much from metropolitan Adelaide - in the Crows NGA zone.

They are zoned but we don’t get draft rights, discounts etc to metropolitan kids.

As mentioned for the 100th time, SA clubs don’t get draft access rights to Metropolitan kids.

Edit:

Another quote

“For the boys, including the highly talented, 194-centimetre Doug, to be tied to Port in the draft on a bidding system the AFL would need to change the zones for NGA players in South Australia to encompass metropolitan areas. The zones are under review. It would be a boon for Port if the AFL expanded the zones to include in the position of the Cochrane sons, who are not eligible as father-sons at North Melbourne or Port Adelaide.”

He's at Central Districts which is a crows aligned NGA club.
Would love to know the gymnastics that somehow makes him Port eligible.

So, increase the integrity of the draft by reducing the integrity of the salary cap?

NGA zoning is apparently based on residence not SANFL club.

Don’t quote me on it as I haven’t researched it, but it’s what I’ve been told.
