Roast AFL 'round zero' What a load of crap ...

Scrap it.
First match next thursday blues and tigers mcg.
Just out of curiosity - are you expecting the Carlton v Richmond match to be highly competitive next week? I'm not. I wouldn't be surprised if the Blues win by 50+ points and I turn it off in the third quarter because Richmond really are that bad these days. On the flip side, I think the Brisbane v Geelong match that was originally scheduled for tomorrow night would have been highly competitive and a great showcase to open the season.

The issue isn't having a different, competitive opener.

The issue is that every team should play in the first round of the season, even if they stretched that round out to run Wednesday to Sunday, Thursday to Monday or something. You could still have a Queensland or NSW opener in that situation.

I don’t particularly care when the season starts or what the fixtures are but I can’t get my head around why it’s called round zero instead of round one.
Its not a zero.
Its an O. Round O for Opening

Stupid idea. There is no proper preseason competition anymore so the AFL, in their infinite wisdom, decide to bastardise round 1 into this stupid round zero rubbish, so there is not even a proper start to the season. Unless you follow one of the AFL’s pet favourites. Then schedule the stupid round zero in cyclone country during cyclone season. This game is being ruined by idiots & the invisible new afl ceo is some sort of weird puppet, not sure who pulls his strings

Only the AFL could look at years, literally years of supporters hating a bye because they want to see their team every week and say hey, let's do more of that even when we don't have to.

Absolute, overpaid, clowns.

Scrap the half-arsed opening round, and scrap the Carlton-Richmond "tradition". Both are crap, with a capital ****ING.

Get rid of round zero
No one wants it and is just waiting for the real round 1
I don't see a reason for everyone sticking their nose up at it, complaining for the sake of complaining. If there was no round 0 everyone would just be playing next week and there would be no games this week at all, so it's not like anyone's missing out, we're actually getting a few games when we otherwise would not. What's the big deal in getting angry about seeing 4 games the week prior? Dunno about you but come this time of year i just want to see footy and happy we get some a week early, don't care who gets to kick it off.

The only issue is the fixturing of those teams for round 1 - easy way around it is to just have the teams who played round 0 to also play other round 0 teams in round 1 to avoid any question around preparation.

Round 0 sucks and this serves the AFL right. Even the way they have handled this cyclone talking about playing footy when there is going to be carnage. You've got to wonder who is suggesting these ideas.

The networks would've suggested it. The league isn't run by the afl anymore, it's run by the networks

Says a supporter of one of the entitled few clubs who gain another advantage over others.

Supporters want to watch their team. Not yours.

Teams playing R0 get an additional bye. And their 2nd bye pushed later. Nice advantage to get two weeks in season to rest and reset.

Teams playing a week earlier get first crack and a marketing boost that helps attract and retain sponsors and members. It's all about marketing and $$$$.

The clubs that are relegated and need to wait a week. Get no additional advantages from R0. Zip.

In a competition full of inequalities why do we need yet another one?

Only one reason. $$$$$$$$$.

You're reaching hard, this is a load of dribble.

You say supporters want to watch their team - well if that's the case then why are you bothered? Don't watch them, from that statement you don't watch other teams anyway regardless when they're scheduled. if there was no round 0 your team would be playing their first game next week regardless. Secondly, not everyone only cares about their team, as mentioned i'm happy to watch footy regardless who it is, not everyone has to share the same sentiment as you on that.

R0 teams don't get an additional bye, this has already been done to death - round 0 teams have played round 0 and non round 0 teams have not played in round 0. Not really that hard to compute. If you want to talk about the intricacies of when those breaks occur because some teams get them twice after a string of games, then you're reaching, the actual affect is barely worth a breath.

Marketing inequalities? - apparently everyone only watches their team so where is the marketing advantage :eyes:. Look there may be an extended interest in the first game of the season, but I'm sorry beyond that it would be making absolutely 0 difference. Take next weeks Collingwood v port game on Saturday night as a random example - there would be absolutely 0 interest differential on that game (or any other for that matter) just because the first game of season was played the week before rather than that Thursday.

Nrl launches in Vegas. Say what you will about that exercise, it’s generated 2 weeks of outstanding headlines.

Andrew Dillon is quite frankly an idiot. This entire concept has been monumentally stupid. There’s more media about the Roosters Broncos than the Swans game, despite being literally one of the only two games in town.

Collingwood and Sydney will play 2 matches before St kildas first game. and out of the 5 games i mentioned ours is the most likely to not be televised, meaning for the "unlucky" clubs we are waiting 2-3 weeks to see our team play while being bombarded with the same teams for 2 weeks. same thing happened last year.

Is there more media about the Roosters-Broncos game, in Melbourne, over O round? I think not.

That’s exactly how I see it. The afl only care about a handful of the big vic clubs and their eastern seaboard pets, so are making their love affair official. By giving them a special headstart & all the early limelight. & letting the other clubs know what scum they are.
Last season I didn’t even know the season had started it was so poorly done.
What an incompetent rabble the AFL are

Because they want to have their cake and eat it too. Get some games in to compete with the NRL (why?) whilst still keeping the “prestige” of Carlton Richmond opening the season.

Doesn’t make it sound any less ridiculous but it’s basically the AFL having a bet each way

Atleast this is a better valid argument than all of the other rubbish being spewed up
