Indhi Kirk has signed a one-year contract extension keeping him at the club as a Category B Rookie for at least season 2025.

In further news, the Swans have delisted Joel Hamling and Aaron Francis, but the club has committed to redrafting both players through the upcoming Rookie draft.

I desperately want to be wrong - but I’m yet to see anything in Kirk that screams “AFL quality: extend”.

I regard him as lucky to remain on the list.

Francis & Hamling moves are strategic, but once again make a mockery of the Rookie List.

10 Senior Listed players remain out of contract, not accounting for the 3 list changes we are shaping our list for next year fairly quickly.

Edit: I think other than both of the Warner's, Cleary is the only long term signing left from the 10 senior players left. Work has been done early and leave all the focus on Chad.

Well deserved for Sam though. Seemed like he was on the cusp of delisting end of last year but put in the hard work and reinvented himself into a paceful and accountable small defender.

I'm a little annoyed that Wicksy didn't get the big fancy re-signing announcement so many of our other boys have gotten.
He's the very epitome of an academy success story and this year, after overcoming a really tough one last year, has become an integral part of our back line, made himself undroppable and would be one of the first picked every week.

So to you Sammy I say....

SYDNEY SWANS CONTRACT STATUS (Updated 13-MAY-2025)

Contract Expires - 2025:

Jack Buller (Cat A Rookie 3rd Year)
Caiden Cleary
William Edwards (Cat B Rookie 3rd Year)
Robbie Fox
Aaron Francis (Cat A Rookie 1st Year)
Joel Hamling (Cat A Rookie 1st Year)
Tom Hanily (Cat A Rookie - 2nd Year)
Indhi Kirk (Cat B Rookie 2nd Year)
Peter Ladhams
Blake Leidler (Cat A Rookie 1st Year)
Jake Lloyd
Caleb Mitchell
Ben Paton (Cat A Rookie 1st Year)
Dane Rampe
Angus Sheldrick
Thinking about our depth and it's clear there's not that many players who I'd want to keep out of that list. The only ones I'd have much interest in re-signing thus far are Clearly, Hanily and Sheldrick, and the latter has been linked to the exit. Lloyd's starting to look past it, Rampe's not getting any younger and has looked his age a fair bit this year and Fox's body might be shot - I'll wait and see where they're at by the end of the year, but it wouldn't surprise if they were potential retirees.

Francis, Hamling and Ladhams are clearly depth options only - but all at least add something when they do play in the firsts so am far from opposed to them getting another year, though I'm not sure I'd keep both Francis and Hamling.

As for the rest:
  • Jack Buller - has had injuries I guess but isn't standing out at VFL level. Don't think he's done enough to justify a new deal.
  • Will Edwards - Cat B status helps but I'm not sold he's going to develop into an AFL player. I feel like Snell and Andrew are ahead of him as far as developing KPD's go.
  • Indhi Kirk - has heart but probably lacks the talent for AFL level. Again, don't think he's earned a new deal.
  • Blake Leidler - tough to gague. Wait and see where he's at by the end of the year, but I'm not sure he'll develop to AFL relevance.
  • Caleb Mitchell - has stagnated in his time at the club, think it's time to move on.
  • Ben Paton - looks well off the pace at firsts level, don't think he's earned a new deal.
Might see a lot of list vacancies by the end of the year, which hopefully should give us an opportunity to build up our shitty depth.

Cleary, Edwards and Andrew extended.

Does Will Edwards’ extension mean he’s upgraded to the senior list?
No.

AFL introduced a new rule in late 2024;
The AFL will introduce a trigger for an additional fourth year on the Rookie List where the Rookie has played less than ten career AFL matches, which will then apply in same way for access to an additional fifth year. Total aggregate years on the Rookie List will be capped at five years (5.5 years for Mid-Season Rookie Draft).

This change aims to assist clubs to invest in players who may take longer to develop.

Not that keen on these extensions to 2027.
Cleary, fine, shown what he can do to a certain extent and is really an onballer playing out of position.

But we now have Andrew, Bowman, Dattoli, Edwards and Snell all contracted to the end of 2027.
Probably OK from a salary cap perspective, but they do take up list spots and I really don't see the need to jump so early and certainly not to the end of 2027.

Thanks HB, greatly appreciated.

I guess that means that if Edwards happened to play 10 AFL games next year, we’d then have to upgrade him to the senior list.

Like you, I’m not particularly enamoured with all these extensions to players who are yet to show much. I think we’ve also blundered with the length of contract given to some senior players - feels like we’re limiting our opportunity to embrace churn.

Note: the above statement doesn’t apply to Cleary. He has shown enough & rightfully earned the extension.
