Might not be the case for NSW and QLD clubs, but the WA and SA clubs already get big crowds for their round 1 (or round 2) home openers. Playing a derby first squanders what will sell out weeks later anyway.

True , but like the idea of round 1 all teams playing in their home state or if not round 1 , one round every season being dedicated to local derbies !!

Just bring back rivalry round and heritage round, they were the best.

How would you do RR ??
Hawthorn vs Geelong
Essendon vs Carlton
Richmond vs Collingwood
GWS vs Sydney
West Coast vs Fremantle
Gold Coast vs Brisbane
Adelaide vs Port Adelaide
Bulldogs vs St Kilda
North vs Melbourne

Although I could see Essendon vs Hawks being wanted, but the AFL would want the 'big four' playing each other.

Most of the themed rounds are rubbish, but I actually like this idea.

I don't ever want rivalry round back. Firstly blockbusters should be spread out during the season, secondly we'd never get to play the two teams we actually hate the most (as Collingwood would play Carlton and Port would play in the showdown). Very few Lions fans actually see GC as a rival club

Cheers mate I agree North Melbourne have few rivalries- Essendon mostly and Hawthorns is dormant (Bombers and Hawks would think less of the rivalry than us because they're bigger clubs as well ) so we, like Brisbane, wouldn't play them in any AFL fixtured rivalry round.

You're right only the WA, SA and around 6 Vic teams would be playing rivals in a rivalry round which is stupid. The expansion teams, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs have no major rivalries atm (somebody please correct me if wrong).

Bit late here. But I'd say St Kilda have a rivalry with Collingwood, but it only really comes to a head when we are both successful teams. And bulldogs and Saints fans seem to bicker constantly.

Yeah true plenty of grand final history as well. I would think though, like us with Essendon and Hawthorn, that the rivalry is pretty one sided. Collingwood probably regard Carlton, Richmond and even Geelong atm as bigger rivalries. Melbourne and even Brisbane as described above also have dormant rivalries with them. Please don't take it as having a shot at the Saints- North Melbourne have the same problem.

Yeah pies fans definitely would see Carlton especially as their biggest rival. Its hard to developed sustained rivalry when you are rooted to the bottom of the ladder 80% of the time.
