Recruiting AFL Trade & Free Agency XII - 💰💰💰

Is the game going past the big bodied, contested bull, inside mid we have all been asking for, in favour now of a fleet of smaller, quicker hard at the footy types now? I think there is probably only room for 1 or 2 big bodied inside mid types on a list nowadays.

Everyone needs to be an elite runner imo. You cant carry the “big bodied mid” if they can’t clock up the miles around the ground at a good pace. The big bodied plodders are getting phased out

Brad Scott on the news sounds like he's buttering us up to take in Thomas
I’m the father of a young girl who I’ll unfortunately force into supporting Essendon. But I will not if we take him on. I’d hate to be an Essendon AFLW player seeing the club recruit someone like him. There’s no place for it

You probably can't be an immobile dump truck, but a big bodied inside mid like Dangerfield or Petracca isn't going out of style anytime soon.

It's all about midfield mix, if you've got one big unit who is less mobile but can absorb contact all day long and make space for the smaller guys it'll likely still work fine.

As many as five clubs have sought to gauge Stengle’s interest in moving away from Geelong as an unrestricted free agent.

I'd hope we're one of the five clubs getting into Stengle's ear.

Was once a long shot, but Betts is no longer at Geelong, he only signed a one-year deal and has left his management. Could be some fire brimming here. Would slot right in with Gresh.

I think Essendon of all teams has learnt we need a big bodied mid.
We should have lined up Jobes replacement, instead of wasting a good 6 years.

I think the Watson/Barlow/Swallow style of slow inside midfield specialist is probably no longer needed in most sides, but bigger players who have another string to their bow will probably always be of use.

I think we have with Durham. Pretty impressive first 5 games as an inside mid. Setterfield when fit is afl standard. I’m not against drafting another or recruiting one, but make sure he has an above afl standard kick and can run out games with the best mids.

Yeah he's perfect for us.

He should stay, Geelong has been fantastic for his career - and might give me slight pause that he's even considering leaving them. But if he is - he's certainly what we need.

Yeah, I think we are finally settled the bid mid role. Stringer also played an important role in last Anzac game, complimented Durham well. Setterfield injuries are a bit concerning, but Perkins and Tsatas may grow into the role anyways. It's a way better situation than we had in the past.

Agree with this. Would be great for us, but sort of hopes he stays with the Cats. They took a chance on him and helped to turn his career around.

I never forgave Crameri for ditching us after we took a chance on him.

Our biggest mistake was not selecting Max Holmes in the 2020 draft.
Max holmes was a bolter in his draft year was projected to be a late pick. He was 74kg and played 1 game all 2019. The fact he went at pick 20 was a shock, but he was never going to be taken ahead of Cox, Reid or Perk. Plus, Holmes didn't suit our needs at that time either.

List of FA we should look at:

Hugh McCluggage
Conor Nash
Tyson Stengle
Ben Ainsworth
Darcy Macpherson
Francis Evans
Isaac Cumming

Not sure you should be too dirty on Crameri. He stuck with the rest of "the 34" when they tried to get him to do a soft deal to plead guilty for a shortish suspension and it cost him a good chance of playing in a premiership with Dogs in 2016. Then he did his knee I think and that was it.

Cumming probably a good moneyball pick

Wouldnt cost much right now not being best 22 and having injuries ect

Heppell and Kelly closer to the end and a lack of half backs as it is

Lual and Roberts not ready to produce a high quality result just yet

Ainsworth a real 50/50 one hasnt come on as much as i expected but playing those inbetween positions like Gresham was

Avg around that 1 goal a game but also around that 16 disp a game aswell

We dont really know or not whether he can play deeper closer to goal and kick 35 goals in a season. I suspect he probably could

Does he have enough speed for what we want

Also hed cost around 700k a year over 5 to move i suspect

But free agents are crucial as the cost to keep a top 25 pick for an otherwise Ainsworth is significant

Stengle will not leave Geelong .

Isaac Cumming would be an okay get for half back.

$700k is not going to be a lot in the very near future. Not that I am saying we should get Ainsworth.

Maybe if we did not lowball him he would have stayed.
