"The AFL is set to make an historic announcement on the broadcast of the Melbourne Demons vs Western Bulldogs women's matches.

It's believed that the Seven Network has agreed to show one of this year's two AFL women's exhibition matches live on free-to-air television, with the other to be streamed online."

Big step forward in the women's game. Was interesting to hear the female Army Officer on AFL360 the other night talking about how Aussiew Rules is fast replacing Rugby as the game of choice for the men and women of the armed forces, so Aussie Rules is certainly gaining popularity as a great game for women to play.

Any South Aussies here would recall watching current WNBA player Erin Phillips (daughter of Port Adelaide's Greg) playing in the Slowdown games. She was very skillful, and a very impressive kick (perfect 40 metre drop punts).

Would it actually be more appropriate for women to play on smaller grounds as they don't kick as far? Imagine they would tire quicker playing on a big ground. They rope the ground off smaller for women's cricket matches.

To a television audience of 12 people nationwide?
Would still rate more than some other sports in this country...

It'll probably be on 7Two/7Mate, but it couldn't rate any worse than some of the filler programs they run. So good to see the Women's match getting some FTA coverage :)

Haven't the Melbourne games been broadcasted since the beginning of TV rights though? Why is this suddenly now news?

Nope. First game had no live coverage and the second game was online only (as an AFL.com.au production).

To give an idea of possible audience size, the VFL game that was show in the similar timeslot last Sunday, attracted 72k viewing audience in Melbourne alone.

Most of the AFL grounds have been too small to match the increase that has occured in the males athleticism. I reckon having lots of open space where the players can run into and display their skills would be a far better spectacle to promote the womens game than to have a shitfest rugby maul style contest by bringing the boundarys in, which is what you often get when the men play at the sydney stadiums.

Oh please please please Seven, have BT commentate this game.
Doing this could actually get him fired as he's bound to say something offensive

Last year's match at Etihad was excellent. Good skills, ferocious attack on the ball, Tayla Harris brought down a massive hanger, and the Dees won.

And for all the dipshits scoffing that "you couldn't pay me to watch it", don't worry, ignorant shitheads aren't the target market so you can spend that time doing whatever you want, it'll still be a roaring success.

Women's football will be poison for television ratings. It will be like women's T20 cricket, there is initial hype and excitement surrounding it but people will soon realise that it's a rubbish spectacle and tune out.

I reckon it could actually rate reasonably well. There's a curiosity factor there for some, and plenty of people who have probably been waiting patiently for such a moment. What did women's basketball/soccer/netball rate when they were shown on the ABC/SBS? It couldn't do worse than those broadcasts.

Oh boy, oh girl, wowee!
Umpire throws the ball up to start the game of this first televised game of ladies bootie, I mean footy, blond ruck taps her team mate. I mean taps to her team mate who is promptly tackled around the boobs, I mean chest and the ball spills out, the ginger rover gathers the pill and spits a pass on to the knockers, I mean chest of the centre half forward who slides in to take a nice mark.

Short passes to the full forward brunette who takes a spectacular grab as her opponent molests her to the ground. The umpire awards the mark in the goalsquare and the FF has no trouble splitting the twigs like a lady of the night in St Kilda.

Oh boy, oh girl, wowee. What a game.

Producer: BT, you're fired.
