Free Agency Alex Fasolo [joins Carlton as an Unrestricted Free Agent]

Just a question for people in regards to the expected compo pick that the Pies are expecting for Alex Fosolo

From whats been reported he is off to Carlton on a 3 year deal worth $1 million and some pies supporters are expecting a 3rd round compo pick

Matt White for Richmond also went at the same price to Port Adelaide 3 years for $1 million and Richmond didnt get a compo pick whilst most expected a 3rd rounder at the time and we were disappointed but it was what it was.

The Salary cap has since gone up nearly 25% in the last 4 years just wondering if the Pies supporters may be as disappointed as we were

Speaking for myself here, but quite happy thanks :)

FWIW I’m really happy for Fas. Think he will do well with the blues.

Good player, if he starts tackling should be best 22

Yeh agreed with the general sentiment. He's capable of being a 40 goal forward, he just needs to start putting on some forward pressure.
Already started his pressure/tackling was much improved in the VFL this year and he had some good games playing as a high half forward working into the midfield. Unfortunately for Fasolo by midyear our forward line was difficult to break into.

McGovern's defensive pressure is pretty good. Long term Carlton probably do look to move Fasolo out considering his weaknesses probably negate the edge Carlton get by having the likes McGovern, Curnow and Mckay .

Have no idea how Collingwood get compo for Fasolo. Apparently has only signed a 1 year deal.
Whole free agency compo is an absolute farce.

Agreed. A one year deal on average money, lost from a club with whom he couldn’t get a game and wasn’t really needed or wanted. The compo system needs to be held accountable to some kind of realistic subjective measure that is known to all; enough of the head scratching decisions.

Anyway, we need small forwards. Not sure he’s the type we need, but if everything goes well for him, he could contribute something to Carlton, even if only as a stop gap. Welcome aboard!

At Collingwood he is behind 30-40 goal forwards De Goey, WHE, Stephenson, Elliott and Thomas.

At Carlton he just has to be an improvement on (2018 games and averages)
  • Pickett - 7 games, 8 disposals, 0.25 goals, 3 tackles
  • Garlett - 11 games, 11 disposals, 0.5 goals, 3 tackles
  • Polson - 12 games, 8 disposals, 0.25 goals, 3 tackles
  • Wright - 21 games, 13 disposals, 1 goal, 2 tackles
Wright has retired so we literally have the worst small forwards in the comp (but he was shit anyway). Ainsworth, Sexton, Young, Ah Chee, Macpherson rotations at GC are the smalls of envy for us!

So Fasolo for 300-350k-ish is definitely worth it for all parties - we get an average player for average salary that is an improvement on our current list, Fasolo gets a best 22 gig, Pies get a pick for a fairly unneeded player.

Without having followed your team too closely Wright seemed like a handy cog and would have weakened the team when he announced he was leaving? Fasolo probably more potent but lacking in other areas.

Wright was a very handy player for a few years, but his form dipped significantly in 2018.

Fasolo looms as his direct replacement. Think he can be a valuable contributor for a few years, he certainly has the talent.

How does it alleviate salary cap space when he was out of contract?
In comparison to last year, us not needing to introduce another 250-300k into our cap is alleviating the pressure. I'm sure we at least had at least put some money aside for a 1 year contract offered to him.

Good luck to him, really hope it works out for him, he's a great bloke. Anyone who saw him in the back half of the year playing VFL for Collingwood could tell he needed a fresh start. Injuries and development of blokes like Stephenson and WHE had just pushed him too far back in he pecking order.

Definitely talented enough to still be playing AFL. I'm not convinced Carlton is the right fit for him though, I can see him turning into a bit of a whipping boy on the back of Carlton not being a great team and him not being great defensively. Feel like Carlton's forwards will be obliged to be doing a lot of intense defensive minded work and it isn't really his caper.
Still, as SterlingArcher said, he pretty much instantly becomes Carlton's best mid sized forward upon entry. Should be able to get 30 odd goals out of him for the year. His influence on a young group shouldn't be understated either. He's a very well liked bloke, extremely buoyant and positive influence.

Our whole forward line is average defensively. We can get the ball in, just can't hold it in. Saying that, he won't be a whipping boy that's for sure. He has already won over the Blues fans with his attitude coming into the club. Seems like a genuinely humble bloke. Really keen to see how he goes as I remember when he was up and firing, he was dangerous in front of goal. I hated him!
