Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Any new updates on Haselby? How has he played in the Nab Challenge games? Do you expect him to score relatively high from Round 1, or might take him a month or so to find the pill and some form again?

Id expect him to score around the 50-70 mark for the first month of footy and increase his scoring from then on. Should average 70+ come seasons end which isnt bad coming off a knee recon.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Just a few thoughts to help improve our dream team site.
1. our dream team site is hard (confusing)to find. We accomodate our own dream team/super coach championship with a bold link (3 pages) yet we make it an extra click and loading time just to get to the dream team link (15 pages) - I just noticed one below the "important links" (however if you read top to bottom I was clicking on the Important Links first. [edited]
2. We have entries from feb 2008. While this creates a bit of history, we should not expect people to read through 12 months of entries to get up to date on players for the 2009 season.

I think this might explain why a few have posted on the main board (some clubs have no section for DT/SC at all - and ours appears like that without reading through every link). I have gone through every board and the best boards (IMO) are the ones that make it easy for all big footy members to find anything quickly - especially DT in pre season.

That is my 2 bob, and I hope it helps our site improve to be one of the most user friendly ones.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

With the talk of a possible elevation for rookie Broughton, am just wondering if there's room in the Docker backline for both him and senior lister Nick Suban?

I realise they play different styles, but would Harvey be comfortable with both kids down back? If not, who gets the nod?

Probably not an issue. Broughton is a defender only. And if Suban plays I doubt it will be in the backline. More likely off the wing/centre/half forward. Same for Hill. That's where they played against West Coast.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

I have not heard much about Ballantyne's progress, this is both a DT question and general interest question.

When will Ballantyne be back playing in the WAFL and then AFL?

Now that you mention it, Harvs did say that he would need at least a couple of WAFl games before he was ready so that would mean his first game would not be till round 6 at least

So far this pre-season Suban has been playing midfield so it looks like they are not going to be competing for the same spot

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

My take on a few players :

Hill - now as a starter Rd 1 probably one of the best rookies to pick for an early price jump. He probably won't stack up the possessions, however he will produce a high amount of tackles and a few goals. The fact that you can pick him up as a defender is a bonus. His disposal efficiency gives him extra credence for SC.

Suban - A strong, well built (AFL ready) defender with a penetrating kick. Probably will be used as a bit of a go to guy because of this. Harvey has stated he will play round 1. He should cement his spot. Great rookie selection.

Drum - Has been a bit of a yo yo in the past due to injury and selection overlooking. His last 4 rounds in 08 (did not play since r10) produced scores of over 80 points including rd 22 at 104 points. If he does play he scores quite well as he is not afraid to kick the ball and take quite a few marks. Definately worth considering IMO.

Browne - high risk, protentially high reward. Be prepared to have a trade up your sleave in case he gets injured.

Bradley - he should play 22 games this year, as he is the only real backup ruck option the side M Johnson* may have a stint here and there. He is a good kick a good grab, gets enough possessions and kicks a few goals. He is a consistent performer and resembles reasonable value.

Haselby - Resembles the best value for established players in our team. Can be a ball magnet. Has a strong grab (much like Bartel), and has great skills and vision. Do not expect him to start off with 100+ scores, however as the season goes on I would think he will get there. Still a risk, but worth it IMO.

Headland - could be a great selection, his scoring was really low last year as he played injured (his price is low). His form at the end of 2007 was excellent and he is capable of scoring high. I have a feeling about Des this year that if his body is right he will be a star.

Hayden - good value, consistent, a superstar. 4 scores over 100 last year including 149 rd 21. A worthy investment and a great player to watch. Worth considering.

Ballantyne - will be a starter when fit. The hard choice is to take him early and wait for him to play, or pick someone else cash out, and then select him. I think most people have him on their radar as he will produce goals.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Can anyone shed some light on Daniel Gilmore for me? Listed as a ruck/centre, is he an undersized ruckman? What is his position likely to be this year, and is he safe in the 22?

Edit - Sorry, just found a bit on him earlier in the thread. Any more opinions? What's the latest?

Edit x2 - I also just realised that those posts were from 2008...

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Mark Harvey has said that he sees Gilmore as a defender. So he will get used as a running defender, and they will probably look to go to him as often as possible out of defence because of his long kick. Similar to a Mattner or Gilbee.

I would say he will play Round 1, and as long as he plays he will probably score quite well. But he isn't guaranteed a game, and his lack of defensive pressure will likely see him on the fringe at times.

Definitely the way to go IMO.

Harvey estimated he'll come back to WAFL around Round 4-5, then play Round 6 if ready. This gives you until Round 8 to trade him in and make money on a cow before his price jumps, and with the amount of quality choice this year in the forwards for rookie/86k players, you'd be mad not to do this :)

Gilmore is yet to cement a spot and will probably play WAFL first up IMO. He is a great utility but needs a few injuries to get a chance. Kepler will get backup ruck duty. I think there are better options available as he has never been a high point scorer anyway.

I disagree, Gilmore will most definitely start Round 1 due to the small bunch of injuries and the need to replace them with mature bodied footballers. His place could come under pressure when the injured players regain fitness, and if he hits a form slump. But when he's playing at his best he is definitely in our best 22. And also he is rather good point scorer. I wouldn't bother looking at him in the mid but possibly in the ruck. Other ruck options would be Macintosh and Maric, but i think Macintosh will need a few rounds before he starts scoring 70+ and i'm not sure if Maric is consistent enough. Hope that helps.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

i have the pav in my team but have noticed his nab cup DT scores hover around the 50 points. just wondering how much game time he had? was he only on for a bit and dominated or was he playing near full TOG and struggling?

any info would be highly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Has hardly been playing/trying, subbed off at half time etc, until the last match when he dominated. Judging by match reports, I would think when the scores come out for the Carlton match that you'll see a big score from Pav.

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Suban was badly winded. He came back on the ground and finished the match from all reports. He has been playing midfield while Broughton has been playing back pocket so they are not in direct competition with each other. I reckon he'll play at least 10 games

Who is likely to get more games, Suban or Broughten? (I realise they play different roles)

Ive only read the past few pages, sorry if im repeating myself

Anyway, ive been watching David Mundy closely this pre-season and ive noticed he has been playing in the middle alot.
Ive seen a few of his pre-season scores and they look very good, im just wondering how you, as Fremantle supporters rate his chances this year...

Re: All 2008 dream team questions here please (or else!!).

Mundy looks set for a big season.

I agree. He resembles good value as a defender too, as he is set to play in the midfield. The frustrating thing with Mundy is his inconsistency. One game he can be heavily involved and you think wow, then the next game he can appear slow and uninterested (and his scores probably reflect this last season).

If he plays in the midfield all year then you would expect him to score well and increase in value quite considerably. He might drift forward and kick a few goals too.

This is a really tough call. They are both set to play AFL footy 2009 now, and they are both in the sights of Harvey. My gut feeling at this stage is Suban. But I think when Broughten gets his chance he will relish it and basically give it all as an older recruit.

They both have pretty standard height/weight combinations for AFL footballers.

Broughton 185 / 86 / 29/09/86
Suban 179 / 82 / 09/05/90
