Seems fitting the God botherer and the land whisperer managed to get the least. Can see why Ben was given limited air time.

S3E8 Recap

Last week's episode felt like we were in a holding pattern - this week things felt like they were moving forwards again. The episode covered days 36-40, with 4 contestants remaining, making it easily the best series of Alone Australia to date.

For me, the highlight was Corinne getting her kit off and going for a skinny dip in the lake. She is a very attractive lady.

As for the contestants...
  • Tom - We really didn't see much of Tom in this episode. He caught a fish, and had a quoll trip his trap (which was captured on his trail cam). The combination rejuvenated his spirits. He's still living in a swamp, and has had significantly less food than the other contestants. I would be shocked to see him survive next week's episode.
  • Corinne - Not much from her this week either. We saw her having a self-care day, washing her clothes and then going for a skinny dip in the lake, before sun bathing on a log by the lake. Idyllic. No mention of any more food depredations by Sassy II. Corinne's face appears unlined, suggesting that her body is still well fed and watered - compare her appearance with that of Karla last week, with Karla's appearance looking haggard after so long without food.
  • Shay - After talking about building a net to catch a wallaby/potoroo, this week he turned it into a gill net, becoming the first Alone Australia contestant to catch a fish using this method. He also caught another fish while night fishing, though this one did require him to wade in and pull it out from under a log, where the line was snagged. Shay's spirits remain high, and he's starting to obtain a bit more food.
  • Muzza - Most of this week's episode centred around the Adventures of Muzza. It started with him catching a small eel, which he promptly lost to a quoll (not captured on camera). He then catches a much bigger eel, worth 4 days of meals, only to be hit by a major gout attack. He can still walk, so the gout attack is not severe (yet). Just as an added bonus, the boat is now inbound for his med check. Ironically, Muzza's gout attack has been brought on by eating too much fish (trout & eels), making him arguably the first contestant to be imperiled by eating too much food!
  • Ben - It was obvious last week that Ben's body had reached its physical limits. This became even more evident this week, when it took him 5+ minutes to work up the energy to shift himself onto a rock, which was only 1m away. With his body at the end, all he had to sustain him was his faith - and he went into full-on God Bothering mode. Damn it was annoying. FWIW, there is nothing whatsoever in the Bible to suggest that Jesus was tempted sexually during his 40 days in the desert, so Ben was completely full of shit when that dribbled out of his mouth. How he can be full of shit, having barely eaten for 40 days, is entirely beyond me... In the end the medical team calls it quits for him. He can hold his head high, in that he never tapped voluntarily, but he was more than happy to go when they gave him the news. 40 days is a good effort, though no doubt he'll spend the rest of his life annoying everyone with his tale about how he lasted the same number of days that Jesus did in the wilderness.

The following contains spoilers from SBS.
SBS have released a YouTube video in which Muzza talks about the (coming) storm:

Muzza compares the storm to cyclones which he has previously experienced. He mentions cold, wind, rain, and hail, stating that it was the worst weather in Alone Australia history. The only way he can have experienced this weather is if he survives the med check which is inbound at the end of Ep 8.

With only 2 episodes remaining, it's looking likely that the much promised storm will be the final determining factor, likely ending the game for at least 1-2 contestants. Corinne's campsite appears to be well above the high water mark. I can't say the same for either Shay or Muzza, suggesting both could be in trouble when the waters rise. Tom has flat out built his house in a swamp, but I expect him to be gone before the storm hits anyway.

It's been interesting seeing how different people have reacted to the quolls. The quolls have stolen food from Corinne & Muzza, so (unsurprisingly) they're annoyed by them. Tom, as an ecologist, is overjoyed at seeing one in its natural habitat.

With 2 episodes remaining, it's still framing up as a 2 horse race, between Corinne & Muzza, with Shay a clear 3rd favourite. It's almost inconceivable for Tom to win at this stage. The fact that Corinne's shelter is above the high water mark is enough for me to install her as favourite.

Great write-up.

The gout situation is just insane - I've only ever seen gout with a rich mate who has too many corporate seafood buffet lunches.

This bloke is literally living in the wilderness - what a catch 22 he needs eels and fish to live but it's causing him intense pain and suffering. I wonder because he's so well fed, could he just finish this last eel off and starve it out for a few weeks? I reckon he'd have the body mass for it

I've had a couple of bad gout attacks. When it's really bad you can barely put any weight on the affected foot. It really is as bad as a broken bone.

The fact that Muzza was still able to walk around on it suggests that either he's an incredibly tough bugger (which he almost certainly is) and/or that it's not a severe attack. I suspect it's a bit from both columns.

The first time I had a gout attack I ended up going to the hospital. The doctors there diagnosed it as gout, gave me an injection of ibuprofen, and sent me home. Ibuprofen helps break down the uric acid crystals, which form in the joints as a result of the buildup of uric acid in the blood. Now I take ibuprofen as soon as I feel the first indications of a gout attack coming. Muzza doesn't have access to ibuprofen, and if he accepts it from the medical staff then that's an automatic tap-out.

Sucks that you can actually get hospitalised for it.

Amazing the contestants can't be given basic ibuprofen/paracetamol. It's not exactly performance enhancing.

Guess it's just the show though.

I should clarify... I went to Emergency, as I was in a LOT of pain and it was well outside of hours for my normal GP. I wasn't admitted, and was free to leave after they gave me the ibuprofen shot.

The contestants are given a first aid kit, as part of the standard equipment (i.e. not one of their 10 items). I'm not sure what it contains. There may be some ibuprofen pills in the kit. I swallow them like M&Ms whenever I have a major gout attack, so I'm not sure how long the pills in the first aid kit would last - and first aid kit contents are not replaced after they've been used.

Season 12 of Alone US starts (in the USA) on 12th June. Expect it to be available on the High Seas, or you can wait until 2026 to see it on SBS.

For the first time in many seasons, Alone will be venturing away from the freezing snowy wilderness of Canada. This season is set in the Karoo Desert, in South Africa. They've also opened it up to more international contestants, with an Australian & Kiwi included in the cast.

This is only the 3rd series filmed outside of Canada - with previous series having been set in Mongolia and Patagonia (Argentina). Both of those seasons are regarded fairly lowly, as starvation-fests.

This scene change will mean that US & Canadian participants will have a big culture shock, with entirely different animals, and an entirely different climate to what they are used to experiencing at home. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out, what sort of landscape they find themselves in, what food options are available to them, and other questions.

With Alone US breaking the freezing winter meta, it may open up options for Alone Australia to consider areas beyond Tas & NZ. It's not easy finding areas suitable for filming Alone Australia, but maybe they might consider some "outback" locations, rather than finding another Tasmanian lake.

The pre-requisites for a filming location are:
  • Large area of virgin bushland
  • Permanent water supply
  • Scenic location (which is one area where Alone Australia S1 failed dysmally)
  • Obtainable food supply (fish, land animals, vegetation)
  • Workable hunting/trapping regulations
  • Accessibility (for safety - medical teams need to be able to reach participants within ~1 hour)
Taken together, the 1st and 2nd points basically mean that it needs to be set on a permanent lake and/or river. You can't have multiple participants coming to the same bore/spring for their water, and most of the artesian bores/springs are fairly salty anyway.

National Parks are out, due to rules about killing native animals. Given the need for permanent water, we're probably talking about finding a de-stocked area on a sheep or cattle station, somewhere on an inland river. I'm not sure how easy such an area would be to find, or negotiate with the land owner(s).

Rumour has it that Alone Australia S4 will be filmed overseas, not in NZ. My guess would be Canada, following the lead from Alone USA. If so, that would be a huge culture shock for the Australian participants, who have never experienced the animals/predators found in that area, and who would probably never have experienced anything close to the cold of a Canadian winter. However, that's just my guess, based on a rumour with very little behind it.

Send em up the Cape, between Aurukun and Weipa, or south.......

So... it turns out that there are 12 episodes in this season of Alone Australia, not 10. That means we have 4 episodes remaining, with 4 contestants still in the wilderness. Alone Australia S3 will finish with a double episode on 4th June.

Also, Alone Australia S3 will have a reunion special (again). This time it will be hosted by Kumi Taguchi (who?), replacing Hamish Blake. I might actually watch it this year, given that Hamish Blake is no longer involved. The Reunion Special will be available on SBS on Demand immediately after the final, with a FTA TV broadcast following 2 days later (on 6th June).

S3E9 Recap

This episode covered days 40-46, and nobody went home. All are now having their own struggles, which is what you'd expect, given that the producers want to keep us guessing before Corinne emerges as the inevitable winner. Again, it felt like a real placeholder episode - we saw deterioration in the condition of all participants, but nothing that really changed the game in any way at all.

Corinne - Is eating like a Queen, feasting on wallaby stew, bolstered with fresh greens which she has harvested from the local area. Foraging was her strength coming into the competition, and being a Tasmaniac has helped her know what's on the local menu, giving her an advantage over the interstate competitors. Her big concern is that her period hasn't arrived on time, and with her biological clock ticking loudly the last thing she wants to do is risk her ability to have babies in the future (though at 39 she's leaving it very late to get started). Her quoll now has a name (Quentin), and shall no longer be known as Sassy II. She's also coming around to the idea of treating Quentin like a pet, to keep her company and help maintain her sanity, rather than just seeing it as a threat to her food supply.
Muzza - In news which will come as no surprise to anyone, he wasn't booted by the medical team due to gout. Shocking, I know, given the extent to which SBS had spoiled the future episodes. Muzza's biggest concern right now is the rising water levels in the lake, with the water now almost lapping at his doorstep. The end of episode spoilers showed him moving camp, so my guess is that he won't be washed out when the storm hits. He's starting to feel fatigued and low on energy, despite being the only participant who has eaten regularly (almost) since the very beginning - my guess is that he hasn't done a great job with foraging for greener to supplement his seafood diet. This fatigue, and the energy required to shift camp (mostly the energy required to lug the camera equipment) could see him exit the game sooner rather than later, even if he's not washed out by the storm.
Shay - Managed to catch a fish, using one of the longest fishing poles I've ever seen. He also proved repeatedly that while his his wallaby trap is completely useless at trapping macropods, it excels at catching homo sapiens. Like Corinne, Shay has problems with bodily functions which aren't arriving on schedule - he hasn't had a shit for 3+ weeks. Right from the start, SBS has spoiled the fact that Shay's shelter gets completely submerged by the rising lake waters - that event will surely happen in next week's episode. It's possible that he finds a way to survive this disaster, but it's hard to see how he does so given his current physical condition.
Tom - Managed to survive this episode without tapping, much to my surprise. His stump and nubbies are starting to show signs of frostbite, so it's only a matter of time before the medical team pull him. Like Shay, he managed to catch a fish, albeit a very small one. While on a midnight ramble he spotted a potoroo, which got away. His subsequent attempt to set a trap proved somewhat comical, due to his failing dexterity (as a result of the cold & hunger).

For my money, we now have a clear 1-2, then it's a toss-up for 3rd. Corinne is so far out in front that it's almost impossible to see her losing. Muzza is still a clear 2nd, even noting his fatigue and need to shift camp. The big question is whether Tom's frostbite takes him out before or after Shay's camp goes the way of Old Adaminaby.

Corinella was the only one to build high and dry.
The other 3 have rushed into building and haven't looked hard enough at thier campsites.
When you arrive and energy levels are highest is when you do your largest output.
To spend huge energy now to move is going to be mentally and physically difficult.
That's survival 101.

Tom appears to have built above the high water mark, but in a swamp. Both Muzza & Shay built below the lake's high water mark. The spoilers have shown Muzza moving camp, and Shay's campsite submerged.

Agree, moving camp when you're already exhausted is far from optimal - and it's made 5x worse by having to lug all the camera gear to the new location. Refer to S1, when one of the Michaels lugged his camera gear 2km through the ulu to his new campsite, only to tap 2 days later.

They could set it along the Great Eastern Hwy between Perth and Kalgoorlie. Just have a contestant every 50km along the water pipeline and have small taps installed. They could survive on road kill and scraps thrown from passing car windows. For shelter they could live in burnt out cars.

The last one to survive being shot by Mick from Wolf Creek, wins the cash.

S310 Recap

This episode covered days 46-58, though there was a big jump in the middle. Presumably due to a lack of usable/interesting footage while the storm was raging, with the contestants doing little more than huddling in their shelters. Tom went home, and the final 3 started their end game.

The storm arrived, but it really didn't create the carnage we'd been hoping for. We got to see a lot of the aftermath, with the water levels having risen, but there wasn't a whole lot of footage from the time of the storm itself.

Kudos to the producers, who altered the beach/name graphics, with Muzza & Shay's names appearing to be further & further underwater as the episode proceeded. Nice touch from the creatives!

As for the contestants:
  • Tom - The episode started with Tom getting a med check, which he was passed (after being told to eat more). I can't remember ever seeing anyone so glum at being told that they're healthy. The family photo was quickly produced, at which point we knew it was all over. "Tom to Ground Control"...
  • Corinne - Her period arrived within minutes of the episode's start, thus killing the tension the producers had attempted to artificially insert last week. She's still looking happy and healthy, and has realised that she's in with a genuine shot at winning this thing. She's rationed her wallaby jerky to last until Day 60, which will be early in ep 11. She's aiming to be there until at least day 70. That sounds remarkable, until you realise that she's already made it to day 58, so it's only 12 more days. For Corinne, this episode was basically business as usual, albeit with Quentin having gone MIA.
  • Muzza - Realising that the waters were rising quickly, Muzza decided to shift camp further up the hill. It's hard to say from the limited footage we were shown, but it appears he only moved about 30-40m. Moving camp on day 46/47, when the body is significantly depleted, is never a great thing - but at least he wasn't moving 2km as we saw done in S1. It turns out that Muzza had a fair bit of eel meat still stored away, and hasn't gone a whole day without food since catching his first fish/eels on Day 5. His biggest problem now is that he's fast running out of fishing hooks, and the risen water levels mean that his fishing areas are now all full of snags. On the flipside, he seemed to be moving smoothly, so the gout must have gone away on its own.
  • Shay - Left it to the very last minute before making his move, but he got it done before the rains came and washed out his old shelter. It turns out that the flooded shelter spoiler which SBS included in their pre-show trailers was a big nothingburger, showing the shelter that he'd already moved out of. However, Shay now finds himself stranded on a small island, hoping desperately that the waters don't rise any further. It turns out that he's been eating a LOT more fish than we were led to believe, when a graphic popped up informing us that he'd feasted on 17x trout and 1x eel. No wonder he wasn't in the same dire circumstances as Tom...

Most of the remaining SBS spoilers, which haven't appeared in the show to date, concern Shay. We've seen a contestant looking remarkably skinny, looking remarkably like Shay, being told that they've lost too much weight. Again, this could be a red herring (as was Muzza's ankle and Shay's flooded shelter). We've also seen footage of a male, again looking a lot like Shay, roasting a potoroo on the fire. If Shay can get large game at this late stage, then that's an absolute game changer.

I still think that Corinne is the red hot favourite to win the game. She's the only one who still looks healthy, seemingly having lost very little (if any) weight during her wilderness sojourn. If the Shay/potoroo spoiler is as suspected, then that's an absolute game changer for him. Muzza has now faded to 3rd favourite as I see things.

Lastly, a reminder that there's no episode next week. SBS have opted to pull Alone Australia from the schedule in order to avoid competing with the NRL State of Origin. The show ends with a double episode on 4th June. There's also a reunion special, which you can stream on SBS on Demand after the end of the final on the 4th, or you can wait a little longer to see it on SBS.

Forgot about the skip week. Stitch up.

In the meantime, heres a long blog about contestants locations from Reddit.

Or he could have just looked at Reddit, where someone had identified all of the locations before the 3rd episode had even aired (noting that some participants weren't shown until the 2nd episode).

I've been watching Alone Denmark 2024. Due to the weather production team decided to have two winners. Shame the female decided to leave so close to the end. I was really impressed with their skills and the way they wittled down the trees to produce string. They have so many different types of fish in their waters and then they could off done ice fishing. But it looked bloody cold. I feel Australia has too many restrictions whereas Denmark production team were great. They greeted the contestants with hugs, gave them food and ice fishing equipment. They were up near the artic circles.
