Amazing coincidences in football

A little along the lines of my Mike Moncrieff thread, but i vividly recall how he scored the opening two goals for the Hawks in that 1978 Grand Final with the same kind of theme, a tumbling chest mark from almost hacked kicks from the centre area, goals in almost identical fashion.

Fast forward to 2022, and Tom Hawkins kicks the first two goals in the 2022 GF in the same way, from ruck contests in the forward pockets.
Maybe not a coincidence as such but it's not too often that the same player kicks the first two goals of a game in pretty much the exact same circumstance, particularly a GF.

Warren Tredrea played his first and last game against Dustin Fletcher, 255 matches/14 season difference, 1997-2010.

Just a little something about the Geelong Norm Smith medalists’ playing numbers.

In numerical order they are -

#3 worn by Bartel in 2011

#5 worn by Ablett in 1989

#7 worn by Smith in 2022

#20 worn by Johnson in 2007

#35 worn by Chapman in 2009

3 + 5 + 7 + 20 = 35

3,5,7,20,35

Also 3 and 5 are the first two and the last two digits in this sequence and 35 is also reached by multiplying the second and third digits in this sequence.

AFL premiership 0 year leap year curse. Since 1980, the team that won a flag in a leap year ending in a 0 endures a long drought

1980 Richmond won flag, didn't win one until 2017 (37 year drought)

2000 Essendon won flag, 23 year drought

2020 Richmond won flag.....

Doubtful
You have to win finals to accomplish that.

Geelong has twice finished major winning streaks in the last fifteen years (also their first post-premiership defeat) against Collingwood on a Friday night: the R9 2008 86 point Magpie victory ended a 12 game winning run and the R1 2023 Collingwood 22 point win ended the GFC 16 game unbeaten streak. On both occasions the teams met in the previous September with Geelong winning by six points or fewer.

Also Chris Scott as a player in 2001 and as a coach in 2022 experienced a GF victory in a team’s sixteenth straight win.

On each instance Collingwood lost to a Sydney team by 6 points or less, the team that plays a dynasty team in the Grand Final against the club with "Sydney" in it wins easily. Richmond by 89 in 2019 vs GWS and Geelong by 81 2022 vs Sydney

Leigh Matthews said "if it bleeds, we can kill it" prior to a match vs reigning-premier Essendon in 2001
Craig McRae said "if it bleeds, we can kill it prior to yesterday's match vs Geelong.
Both teams went on to win their respective matches against the reigning premiers who were minor premiers and premiers the previous year as well as having dominant seasons.

30 years ago Tom Mitchell's dad Barry Mitchell in his first game for Collingwood had 23 possessions and kicked 3 behinds, his son Tom Mitchell last night had 23 possessions and 2 goals so nearly similar stats

And of course Collingwood won both games by nearly identical margims 20 points in 1993 and 22 points last night

In both the 2017 and 2018 QFs Josh Caddy had 17 touches and kicked 2.2.

In both of the MCG PFs Gryan Miers has played in he has had 22 touches and kicked 2 goals.

About 15 years ago the AFL launched an investigation into a lack of Victorian success.

Since then we’ve seen almost unbroken dominance and multiple Victorian dynasty teams.

Pretty incredible coincidence.

From 2004 to 2006, no Victorian teams played in a grand final, and from 2001 to 2007, no Melbourne based team (9/16) won a premiership.

Brisbane played Port Adelaide in Round 1 2001 at Football Park and lost
Brisbane played Western Bulldogs in Round 4 2001 at Docklands and lost

Brisbane played Port Adelaide in Round 1 2023 at Adelaide Oval and lost
Brisbane played Western Bulldogs in Round 3 2023 at Docklands and lost
What?

Richmond won premiership in 1980, 37 year drought in between premierships

Richmond won premiership in 2020,

A premiership won by Richmond in a year ending in 0 divisible by 4 will see a drought increased by 10 years

Richmond did not win the Premiership in 1940.

Richmond after round 3 of 2023 sat on 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss.

This has only ever occurred twice before, where the Tigers were sitting on 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss after 3 rounds.

1980.

&

2020.

It is clearly happening again.
