Tried a bacon egg sub few months ago one Sunday morning.

Like eating dried sheep dip with bread like damp cardboard.

An excellent piece here on the new kings of take-a-way food...

Nowhere could I see any mention of healthy food — though there was a huge photograph on the wall of a highly unappetising collection of processed meat blocks that looked like dog food.
The chilled counter contained the most unappetising collection of ingredients I have ever seen. Sorry-looking lettuce, plasticky olive slices and an assortment of chopped meat that was almost unidentifiable.
I asked what a pile of brown circles was. They looked like leather patches that belonged with a cobbler. ‘That’s beef,’ said the server.
Some brownish slithers? Steak. Brightly coloured pebbles? Chicken tikka. I laughed as I pointed at a pink rectangular slab that looked like Plasticine

What I struggle to understand is why people get the high fat subs? Why not go to Maccas HJ KFC?

Meatball subs are just crap along with the satay chicken.

Even the footlong subs are high in calories for most selections.

While I rarely have the fast foods, would rather a whopper with cheese all day every day over a footlong meatball sub.

Very good article. She hits on the issue exactly - everything outside the store is designed to attract the health conscious and guilty, the the second you walk in, everything changes - they've got you now, and it's about selling you as much shit as possible.

Bright posters everywhere encouraged me to buy a foot-long sandwich for just £2 more than the basic price (around £3.50 for a 6in sub) and to add crisps and a fizzy drinks plus a doughnut, cookie or nachos.

The more you actually look at the "food" in Subway the more foul it becomes.

for the workers it has to be sloppy sandwiches. salad all over the place and falls out when you eat it.

other customers, people who cannot figure out what they want on it. shits me every time.

When they barely sprinkle a few shavings of lettuce on. Lettuce is damn well meant to be the centre piece of the sub that divides the meat from the rest. You need a middle man or it all goes to hell.

Agree the tightwad 'three olive slices and a sliver of carrot' approach to salad is absolute bullshit. I assume it's down to franchisees trying to scam extra cash but it is simply fraud. Their advertisement show normal helpings of salad, you shouldn't have to interrupt someone three times in an order to ensure you get what they advertise and what you are paying for.

Just on this if you want to be a campaigner, but hammer a very fair point home, order the sub, let them skimp on salad, and once it is wrapped and bagged say there's not enough salad, I don't want it, make me a fresh one. If they refuse, or try to unwrap and reopen the sub they've already messed up, walk out.

I like subway in limited circumstances (in winter footlong pizza w mozzarella, capsicum, pickles, chilli, twice toasted is a wonderful sandwich) but agree that much of the healthy choice marketing is irresponsible nonsense. The cookies in particular are an extraordinary effort, basically they are a mars bar in terms of kilojoules and sugar but less filling. And their meal deal gives you two!

About the only way you can have a healthy and filling sub is a 6 inch meat sans cheese and packed with salad, which makes the salad tampering all the more unacceptable.

People get a foot long and a diet coke and think they are on the way :)

Went to Subway today and asked for a Chicken Parma footlong. The chick serving me put on her most unenthusiastic face possible, rolled her eyes and says in a monotone voice 'we do not have any chicken parma fillets'. Feeling cheesed off ( ;) ), and not impressed at all with her body language towards a customer, I ordered a ham sub with the lot, waited until she wrapped it up, got a couple of cookies, then when she gave me the total, I go 'actually, on second thought, I think i'll skip Subway today' and walked off.

Felt good too.

Stroll into Subway, short line, winning, Person in front of me reaches into pocket, 'Oh god no', pulls out piece of paper, 'Dont do it man', proceeds to order 10 subs ....

The other day I was running late for work. Needed coffee. Stop in at local coffee place. Usually at that time of day there isva queue. There was only one person at the counter. "My lucky day" I thought. Get up to the counter. The person in front of me proceeds to order ten coffees.

Subway is the most unsatisfying 'fast food' place in the world. I go there every few months, once my memory of my last trip has been wiped clear, and am again disappointed. The place needs a revamp IMO, the menu and everything about Subway is just bland and boring.
Which of the major food chains isn't?

Subway is a triumph of marketing. I salute Doctor's Associates Inc. who have conned millions of people into believing they are purveyors of healthy food.
You can get healthy food at Subway. It's just that most people think that just because you eat at Subway you are eating healthy, regardless of what you get. Australians have no idea about healthy eating. I have a mate who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. As a long term diabetic I have been showing him the ropes. The other night he was eating a huge plate of takeaway fish and chips. He thought he was eating healthy because he had a salad with it. I actually face palmed in front of him.

Getting short changed and walking away with a four inch sub because the 'Sandwich Artists' are incapable of cutting the bread into two remotely equal halves.

I hate asking for toasted, only to have them pull it out early and hand me over a luke-warm sub minus any sort of toasting.

Nothing worse than when they dont toast your sub long enough. Its just warn and still relatively soft.

I've never experienced them "pulling it out early", even at extremely busy times. They always wait until the toaster oven beeps before pulling it out.

What I struggle to understand is why people get the high fat subs? Why not go to Maccas HJ KFC?

Maybe people just want a particular taste, and aren't going in with health considerations in mind.

My standard is steak and cheese (swiss) with bacon, on Italian herb and cheese bread, toasted, with all the salads (including jalepenos), Southwest sauce and pepper. Probably one of the least-healthy options they provide, but I like the taste, so I go with it (and often wash it down with an Farmer's Union Iced Coffee as well).

Had it with wholemeal bread the other week (as they'd ran out of the herb & cheese). Never again. Changed the whole taste of it and made it horrible.

If they run out of herbs and cheese, always go white. Parmesan Oregano was good too.

Noted. The white has a real doughy look though, which is why I went with something that I thought would be more flavourful, but it taste like the filling was wrapped in a warm sponge. Terrible.
