Exactly, a few years ago everyone was saying the same thing about Adelaide, they were too old and had no high draft picks which seems to mean you have no good youth coming through.

All of a sudden guys like Bernie Vince, Tippet, Mackay who no one had ever heard of or rated, come out of nowhere while the youth of the other clubs that were all so promising and were going to deliver them a premiership have fallen off the pace or been delisted.

Basically we were able to have our cake and eat it too because of the obsession of youth in the AFL these days.

Sydney will be playing finals footy again in the very near future.

I think most footballers, near 80% of them have the talent to succeed in afl and play at a high-average level. Getting the "star" player of which there are only few like judd, goodes, franklin and bock is a matter of luck.

the job of any good club is to allow a young player to realise what his role in the team is very early in the chain. Adelaide, Collingwood and Sydney do this espically well with good strong mentors around them.

this is why premierships are not won with picks 1-20 but picks 20-70 and mature rookies.

The "old timers" who post on this site will understand!

It is difficult for the entire football world to really grasp the reality (demonstrated over the last decade Plus) that Swans have ARRIVED are grounded. Previously were the "writeoff embarassments"

Sure we haven't had "good picks" but eg who could forget Grundys first game or his mark of the year?, who could contemplate Jesse White transition?, WOT a rugby bloke with a famous Dad playing AFL level ....BS! they cry.... until they see Jack, Bevan and LRT!

VesZ Merideth Smith Hanners!...more to come GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FERK EM! .... no idea:D (as was and will always be the tradition) the MORE they contend we are gawwwwn!.... the THUNDER comes from the clouds!

Roos has done a great job with what opportunities that "overachieving elite performance" means in the socialist equalty of the AFL draft system!

Wouldn't mind a few more athletic talls though.... (for hooleys sake) .....Playfair ....PLEASE STAND UP!

The magpies are kind of the exception to the rule because they can pick a side half full of kids and still win.

Its ridiculous how well the younger magpies are able to just step into the side and perform like they played 100 games.

Good grounding in their VFL team which is non-aligned, thats why it takes our kids longer in Canberra

Taking 'longer' does not mean 'worse'. How can you deny the Canberra competition when it has proven very successful with quite a number of players.

We also have the advantage of non-alignment. Which only a few clubs have (I think Brisbane, Sydney, Collingwood and Geelong?)

You would have to say they are four of the clubs that have done well over this period (since we have been in ACTAFL).
