CROWS veteran Nathan Bassett is on track to make his return from a long injury lay-off against Hawthorn this week, but possibly not in the position where he earned his All-Australian honours.
Coach Neil Craig has experimented with senior player Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod in different roles up forward and he says Bassett could be another next pinch-hitter in attack.
“Nathan played a fair bit of his junior football up forward. We’ve seen a little bit of him up there during our pre-season training and he looks more than competent,” Craig said.
“If we do get an opportunity to look at him up forward, now’s the time to do it, so that come the real season, we’re not just putting him up there with hope.”
Craig said Bassett’s move to the forward line would not be permanent, but would instead serve as a safety net should key players get injured, as was the case last season.
“It's important for us as a club to get that flexibility in different positions,” Craig said.
“We’ve even tried Ben Rutten up forward and also as a loose defender in the pre-season and he’s actually stood Simon Goodwin a few times.
“We’re just trying to develop some additional skill sets in our players, whether they’re just entering their career, or a guy like Bassett who is nearing the end of his career.”
Bassett has not played football at any level since breaking his ankle against the Hawks in round 14 of last year.
More recently, the 31-year-old suffered a quad injury and only rejoined his teammates in full-scale training on Wednesday.
Craig said it was important for Bassett to get some game time under his belt before the season kicks off in three weeks time.
“Nathan trained flat out today and if he gets through the week there will be a fair chance that we’ll have a look at him,” he said,
“With 26 players in the team, you’ve got a lot of availability on the bench, so this week there will be a mixture again of senior and some junior guys.
“Brett Burton and Rob Shirley, who are both senior players, will come back in and Nathan hasn’t played for nearly nine months, or trained, so we’ll need to have a look at that situation.”

Re: Basset Up Forward?

Good to see that Craig is thinking outside the box at the very least but I'm pretty sceptical on this one lol :D. Especially seeing as we have Sellar waiting in the wings, Gill with some experience under his belt now, Tippett and Griffin possible to play forward, not to mention that Kenny looks set for his best year yet. Would expect that a bit of fun in the NAB cup as an experiment is as far as it would go.

Ive said it plenty of times on here already, but Nathan was the best junior forward i ever played with. Unstoppable in the air. Back at Norwood when Craigy was there he said Nathan had the best hands for a guy his size he had ever seen. That was in Naths first year of league footy. Ive been waiting for the day he is given a chance up forward. His kicking was his weak point no doubt but unstoppable in the air. I remember his last game for Norwood High. We played Rostrevor in the Pizza hut cup semi final. They had about half a dozen blokes who went on to play AFL. Bass kicked 9 of our 11. We lost by 6 points. He stood 3 blokes including Ben Wilson ( ex Sydney, Collingwood, Norwood, Sth Adelaide) Ben got picked up pick 7 that draft. Nathan got overlooked:D

Yeah you are right, he was a great forward as a junior. I remember him kicking a bag against Port at the Parade one day in the early 90's. The crowd was huge and for an 18 year old he was sensational.

I also remember him going forward against Collingwood in that prelim at the MCG and doing really well. I think there is a huge oportunity to push him forward more than once this year. With Stevo, Bocky & Truck holding things together down back he will & should go forward.

when he came to the Crows I thought he would be a Modra Replacement. Surprised me he went down back.

This would get Moran into the game, maybe that is why we drfated him. Craigy did have Bassett at Norwood where he played forward.

I seem to recall a prelim final vs collingwood in which sea-bass played up forward.

Kicked 3 goals I recall.

Still, I really think that with the young forward line options, you'd want bass down back instead.

When he went down, opposition teams scored 3 goals more per game. He is that good at helping out the other defenders... he's worth that much on the scoreboard.

Perhaps the opposite is true, with a the young forward line options you may want someone experienced in the ancient ways of umpire dummy spits.

he has been good when pinch-hitting up forward in the past but he is arguably the best zone off defender in the game...

however it will be interesting to see how he goes...from memory 45 out is his absolute max. shot for goal haha
