CROWS veteran Nathan Bassett is on track to make his return from a long injury lay-off against Hawthorn this week, but possibly not in the position where he earned his All-Australian honours.
Coach Neil Craig has experimented with senior player Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod in different roles up forward and he says Bassett could be another next pinch-hitter in attack.
“Nathan played a fair bit of his junior football up forward. We’ve seen a little bit of him up there during our pre-season training and he looks more than competent,” Craig said.
“If we do get an opportunity to look at him up forward, now’s the time to do it, so that come the real season, we’re not just putting him up there with hope.”
Craig said Bassett’s move to the forward line would not be permanent, but would instead serve as a safety net should key players get injured, as was the case last season.
“It's important for us as a club to get that flexibility in different positions,” Craig said.
“We’ve even tried Ben Rutten up forward and also as a loose defender in the pre-season and he’s actually stood Simon Goodwin a few times.
“We’re just trying to develop some additional skill sets in our players, whether they’re just entering their career, or a guy like Bassett who is nearing the end of his career.”
Bassett has not played football at any level since breaking his ankle against the Hawks in round 14 of last year.
More recently, the 31-year-old suffered a quad injury and only rejoined his teammates in full-scale training on Wednesday.
Craig said it was important for Bassett to get some game time under his belt before the season kicks off in three weeks time.
“Nathan trained flat out today and if he gets through the week there will be a fair chance that we’ll have a look at him,” he said,
“With 26 players in the team, you’ve got a lot of availability on the bench, so this week there will be a mixture again of senior and some junior guys.
“Brett Burton and Rob Shirley, who are both senior players, will come back in and Nathan hasn’t played for nearly nine months, or trained, so we’ll need to have a look at that situation.”

. Especially seeing as we have Sellar waiting in the wings, Gill with some experience under his belt now, Tippett and Griffin possible to play forward, not to mention that Kenny looks set for his best year yet. Would expect that a bit of fun in the NAB cup as an experiment is as far as it would go.
