I think Longer will play in every game he's fit for. We have traded out our only experienced ruckman besides him. Pierce and Marshall can both play as rucks but Marshall is 13 games into his career and played mostly as a forward. Lewis Pierce has had 4 career games. Pierce particularly would have to show heaps or hope Billy goes down to be our main ruckman.

Love him or hate him we probably should have kept Hickey, we are pretty much hoping Billy has got to a point where he doesn't miss every second season injured and they Lewie can come on in leaps and bounds.

I always get the feeling that if everything feels right for Longer, he can play pretty well. But he's not one to brush aside niggling injuries and the like.
So yeah, i'm a bit nervous without much backup.

Joyce & Marshall are 2 of the significant improvers over this preaseason .

Agree with point Joyce gifted games last year.

Really intrigued on seeing how saints play this year , certainly won’t be like Inter Club last Friday with all the
media around .

My only beef is your “Captain “has to be one of your top 3 players in ability , otherwise you are gifting games
to that individual because they are , no witch-hunt just has to be if team is to improve on past years.

Would you have Shannon Hurn in West Coasts top 3 skilled players then?

Apart from people on here, is he really being considered?
I doubt they’ve started team selection process yet.
Not true - he was OK against Melbourne in his first game (10 possessions) playing alongside Carlisle and Brown.

Clearly outclassed against Port in the next game but that was where the other 2 KP defenders were Austin and Gilbert and our midfield failed to turn up.

With Gilbert gone, Brown suspended and at the time Austin WAS under a cloud, it would be between Joyce and Clavarino for full back in Round 1

Against Melbourne he was average and every other game below average. Still not ideal having him play Round 1.

Not a lot of sides in the comp have three specialist full backs on their list so things are never gonna look flash if your 2 first picks aren't available.

If that doesn't inspire you with confidence, how are you going to feel if Longer and Pierce are injured at the same time?
Marshal will come in and he has shown far more than Joyce.

Anyway, a Solution would be to play Roberton as a KPP which he has done before and use Webster as distributor.

True, good point.

The longer/pierce thing reminds me of back when McEvoy was our solo ruckman and he got injured, forcing Jason Blake to Be our ruckman, even though he was supposed to be our fullback.

Longer is our best tap ruckman, and could improve our midfield output, but relying on him is a risk. Pierce isn’t as good a tap ruckman and is just as underwhelming around the ground. Would rather Roma be our ruck if Longer went down.

I'd love Blake to be a ruck coach. He was able to hold his own despite being the one that they set fire to at StKilda ruck reunions. ( Probably too busy in the business world for coaching though ).

I'd be picking something like this and I think it's what the coaches will pick too.

B: Jarryn Geary, Josh Battle, Dylan Roberton
HB: Jimmy Webster, Jake Carlisle, Daniel McKenzie
C: Dan Hannebery, Jack Steven, Hunter Clark
HF: Jade Gresham, Tim Membrey, Jack Billings
F: Ben Long, Paddy McCartin, Dean Kent
FOLL: Billy Longer, Seb Ross, Jack Steele
I/C: Blake Acres, Jack Newnes, Rowan Marshall, Jack Sinclair

The biggest question for me is the change of positions for a few boys.

Josh Battle, Jade Gresham and Jack Billings have all been identified as moving groups but I suspect that Gresham and Billings will still start forward, then move into midfield. I'm not sure if Battle gets picked for R1 though, probably Austin is the safer pick until Brown comes back.

I like the look of that 22 and with the new recruits (Parker in particular) hopefully knocking on the door early we will be full of confidence.

Just need to get that early win and go from there.

Agree that Longer is at the top of the pecking order right now but he's far from a lock. Pierce has a long way to go but his second ever senior game was as good as Longer's best few efforts in his 65 game career. If Pierce improves and Longer stagnates then there's every chance that Pierce overtakes him.

Against Essendon we played a Pierce/Marshall combo that was very effective

Pierce: 18 disposals (6 contested), 5 marks (2 contested), 27 hitouts, 2 tackles
Marshall: 14 disposals (6 contested), 7 marks (2 contested), 13 hitouts, 1 goal

Bellchambers: 13 disposals, 3 marks, 25 hitouts (lone ruck)

If that kind of return could become the norm they would make a very strong ruck combo. I'd much prefer that to Longer getting his 8 disposals and 35 hitouts with Bruce/Acres/Lonie helping out in the ruck.

He was pretty good but he's played 3 games in 5 years or what ever it is. Hope one of them starts to become a competitive ruckman. I haven't given up on Billy yet either.

I like all of it apart from no Bruce. He’s a certain to play round 1 if fit. Swap him for Marshall and you’re a go.

Hey guys all the best for the upcoming season and I'm pretty sure it will be a better one for you.
I was hoping I could get some info if possible?
I was wanting to ask a question about Jimmy Webster as I'm a super coach nerd and was wondering if anybody could explain why he seemed to go very well in the first half of the season and then obviously had an injury but dropped right away in the second half of the season. Was it all about the injury or did he have a role change or ???
I see that some of you have Webster on a wing and some as a half back so is his position a bit up in the air?
Here are his stats from 2018
Cheers in advance for any help and good luck for the year! I'm predicting a big one for Steele.

Good point. I forgot about him!

Bruce will probably play R1. We missed him last year. A fit and firing Bruce is integral to our team.

Hopefully Marshall pushes him for that spot. Same with players like Pierce, Lonie and Coffield.

We need genuine competition for spots and it seems to me that we’ve got a little bit of it already.

Cheers mate, right back at you. Jimmy was one of several for us who weren't anywhere near as good once they returned from injury last season. Was in career-best form and one of our best 3-4 prior to that.

Don't think it was a positional thing, more likely just a physical one that kept him from his best on return.

Maybe ask the AFL they made him All Australian Half back flank 2018

Only one of 3 players for West Coast.

I think it was mainly injury for Jimmy. He really shouldn't have come back in late in the season but we had so many other defenders injured that he played through his injures. He is back and training fully now, so seems to be over the issue.

Richo mentioned in an article the possibility for Nick Hind to be brought in to play off half back and us moving Jimmy to the wing. I see this as unlikely to happen, since Jimmy is one of our few good kicks out of the backline and also a really solid defender. And with the new kick in rules, his skills would be best utilised in that role.

B: Rice, Clavarino, White
HB: Battle, Austin, Savage
C: Hind, Armitage, Phillips
HF: Newnes, McCartin, Parker
F: Young, King, Paton
R: Pierce, Clark, Coffield
Int: Joyce, Wilkie, Langlands, Bytel

Not the worst 2s team if everyone was fit..
Dunstan would be there instead of Clark but other than that I pretty much agree.

Sorry for the intrusion fellas, but was wondering if anyone could tell me how Acres pre-season is tracking and what position he is likely to play int he side? Seems like a bunch of your blokes are earmarked for more midfield time and I can't settle on who is actually going to fill those spots in your 22. Fairly avid player of fantasy and supercoach and have had my eye on starting him. Started with a bang last year and seemed to be playing pure midfield but it was basically all over once he was injured.

Good luck for the season ahead! And no doubt you'll significantly improve on last year

I think he'll play if available, but his position isn't really clear. I think they tend to slot him in where they need someone , rather than his best position.

Dunstan was my last bench spot, was tossing up with him, Coffield, Clark and Hind. Backing Luke to show his experience and win a spot back, still hold onto hope he will play like he did at the end of 17’.

Coffield appeals massively because of his class and versatility, could easily play the whole season on either the back flank or wing.

Clark will no doubt play early and from all reports has looked the goods but I’ll give Dunstan first crack.
