What a bitter, bitter man!

Mark Thompson in his book talks about Nathan Ablett and says that he was better than Gary Ablett.

Firstly, Nathan Ablett was a sook. He was as soft as butter. There are hundreds of players in local footy, all across this fair land, who would give their left and right testicle to play AFL football, and yet this guy didn't want to because he didn't like the media spotlight. All silk and no substance.

You know what, Nath? Neither did your dad. But he still played the game. He shunned the media and the limelight, despite being talked about all the time, yet he still stayed in the game. He went walkies in 1991, but even then, came back, showing what playing football at the highest level meant to him.

Meanwhile, "Natalie" can't even play out more than a couple of seasons, before quitting because he couldn't cope with the attention.

Also, Bomber Thompson, saying that Nathan was better than Gary Ablett. Here we go again with Bomber potting Gazza jr.

He never accepted that Gazza was a better player than Bomber was on his best day. He bullied Ablett out of Geelong, and made his decision to go to Gold Coast easier, and then "Liar" Thompson, who criticised Ablett's loyalty, showed none himself by jumping to Essendon, after using the phone Geelong gave him for club business, and when Frank Costa asked him if he was speaking to Essendon, Bomber lied to his face. He lied to the man who was the sole reason that Bomber kept his job at Geelong and became a premiership coach, after taking 8 years to do it (Chris Scott took one year to do the same thing). Bomber sabotaged our 2010 season by focusing on bullying Ablett all season (Nathan would have left in five minutes under similar bullying, and would have run off, crying to mummy), and then apparently talking to Essendon on the phone DURING our Preliminary Final against Collingwood, costing us the match and possibly another flag.Further, Bomber then went to Essendon, and was involved with a club who doped their players. Karma couldn't hit his lying ass hard enough.

Gary Ablett jr had more talent than Nathan and Bomber put together.

I love everybody mentioned in that post and will be forever great full for the pleasure they gave this long suffering Cats fan.

I spoke to Gaz Jnr when Nathan was about to come to the club and he said that Nathan would be a better player than him.
Preety funny thread saying that Bomber was jealous that Garry was a better player than him.
Also bagging someone who didn't want to play footy. Who gives a shit, it's their life, their choice.
Don't get some of the Bomber hated not here. He brought me a lot of happiness.

He's not alone in at least ranking him highly. Cam Mooney refers to him as the biggest waste of AFL-level talent he's seen.

Can you blame the kid? Unstable upbringing. His father was so hero-worshipped against his will that he was nicknamed "God", for goodness' sakes. On top of that, his father was implicated in drug use, hanging out in hotels with a young woman who died of an overdose. Everyone expected him to be a star, followed his at the local footy, and he never wanted it. Can't blame him.

He walked out on two clubs because he couldn't stand the attention - and that was in the 1980s, well before social media, the 24/7 news cycle and the eagle eye that we now put on footballer behaviour.

Meanwhile, "Natalie" can't even play out more than a couple of seasons, before quitting because he couldn't cope with the attention.
Ahhh yes, because - ha ha ha - women are soft and weak, get it. Calling him a woman's name is an insult, ha ha ha.

More talented, perhaps. That was also what the whispers were about Nathan in his early footballing days, too.

I think... some of this might be exaggeration, and some of it wishful thinking. He should have said that he was speaking to Essendon, sure, but the rest of this - especially the first sentence - is just bizarre. Geelong played in a way that fed Ablett the ball and it was pretty clear to all that he was an out and out star.

I swear it's as though he didn't coach our first flag in 44 years with a list that he nurtured from the footballing cradle.

Why so bitter towards Nathan?

This is hardly threadworthy. Others have said this as well including gary ablett senior.

I played junior footy against both of them and Nathan was much more talented. Gary (after a talking too from teammates) worked very hard to become the player he is. Nathan obviously didn't but who are we to judge? Are you the most successful and driven person in your field?
If Nathan had that drive and kept playing he would've been a superstar. He and Hawkins could've been an amazing forward duo still now.

BTW Mick Turner rated Nathan higher than his brother when they were juniors

Cameron Mooney said that Nathan Ablett had more talent than Gary Jr but then went on to describe Nathan as a waste of talent and ability. I doubt that bitterness has anything to do with it.

Sure he won us two flags, but he was a liar, a hypocrite, an adulterer, and was a great coach when that was all he focused on, but give him more than one thing to focus on, and the team suffered (2006, his marriage troubles made him focus on that, rather than coaching the team, as well as having a shit gameplan, which he changed in 2007. 2010, he focused more on what Ablett was doing in 2011 than what Geelong needed to do in 2010.

He dropped Wojo for the 2008 GF, so that he could play his "boy" Paul Chapman, after guaranteeing Travis Varcoe a GF spot after his first ever good game, in a Preliminary final. He didn't put Rooke on Hodge, and Hodge got the Norm Smith, opting instead to put Matthew Stokes (who had never tagged in his life) on Hodge. I can see the tactic now "Everyone is expecting Rooke to go to Hodge. We'll fool them and put Stokes on him instead. Yeah, that will work". He also played injured players in that GF. All this in the unlosable 2008 Grand Final.

Just read the book. Can't recall where he definitively said Nathan was better than Junior. He certainly said that Nathan could have been as good as Junior. He put it into context in so far as Nathan's accomplishments at AFL level were achieved off natural ability.

Upbringing has nothing to do with it. Gazza jr has the same father, but Gazza is outgoing, is seen at social events, and does interviews and the like (when he isn't injured). He had the same pressures. More in fact, since he had the same name. Gazza has got a lot of negative media attention ("Footy Classified" seem to be running a campaign to take the captaincy off him). But Gazza has gone onto being a household name, and Nathan has gone onto being the answer to a trivia question.

In fact, Gary jr lived at his dad's house more often, whereas Nathan lived with his mum. So, if it had to do with Gazza snr's lifestyle, why did Gazza jr not turn out more affected?

When you are using Cam Mooney as a reference, you have already lost the argument.

You don't get the full force of Bomber lying that time, though. It wasn't to Brian Cook, who had reviewed him, or someone else at the club. He lied to the face of the one man who believed in him the entire time- Frank Costa. Costa saved Bomber's job in that review, and vouched for him, when Cook and others suggested sacking him. And how does Bomber repay him, not with a "I can't talk about it", or "Can we talk another time?" or "No comment", but a "No", which was a bare-faced lie.

This is when you lost me.

Which one of these isn't true?

1) He lied to Frank Costa about talking to Essendon

2) He was a hypocrite for criticising Ablett about his "disloyaty" even when he was making arrangements to jump to Essendon himself.

3) He is an adulterer because he ran out on his marriage to his wife to take up with his current wife, and had been seeing her prior to this.

He helped us win our first flag in 44 years, give him a break.

So that exonorates him from criticism, does it?

Okay, everyone, Baby Duck says that we can never say anything bad about Bomber Thompson, and ignore all his faults, because he coached us to two flags.

Does that mean, if we win the flag in three weeks, that all criticism of Chris Scott stops, because he would be a two-time premiership coach as well?

I was talking about Nathan Ablett ding dong. And who the f cares? We just made it to a prelim.

and then apparently talking to Essendon on the phone DURING our Preliminary Final against Collingwood, costing us the match and possibly another flag.

Whether he was on a phone sex hotline or forced to focus on the game Clockwork Orange style i doubt the result would be any different.

What is your source for this claim?
