Andrew Welsh at today's press conference

VERSATILE Bomber Andrew Welsh says a "back to basics" approach adopted by new coach Matthew Knights has been one of the features of the club's pre-season training program.

Speaking at an AFL media conference in the lead-up to Friday night's NAB Cup clash against the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome, Welsh said the implementation of a new senior coach – after 27 years of Kevin Sheedy at the helm – had given the club a spark.

"Pre-season has been fantastic. When you change the boss in any job, everything is new and you've got to learn to adapt to that sort of stuff," Welsh said.

"Everyone's fresh and all of the players are fresh and it's a totally new approach around the club … training has been as hard as it has any other year, but 'Knighter' identified when he was coming for the job that we really needed to work on our skill execution and that's something we've pushed really hard.

"You can see the foundation and the building blocks are starting to come through the way the younger guys used the ball last week up in Brisbane."

On the field, Welsh said the absence of one of the club's greatest – Brownlow Medallist and five-time Crichton Medallist James Hird – had also given the change-rooms a vastly new feel.

"It's totally different. He's been such a huge guy around the club for so many years and since I've been at the club and everything he does is 100 per cent, whether it's off the training track or on the training track," Welsh said.

"You realise he's not there, but it's a great opportunity for guys like myself and Mark McVeigh, who have been there for a few years now to stand up and at times it was unfair [because] we'd leave it to 'Hirdy' and we'd just think he was going to deal with it and he'll be able to sort it out for us.

"Now we're making guys like myself step up and bring the younger guys up with us to that level to fill that void."

Welsh, who did not play in Essendon's victory over the Brisbane Lions at Carrara last weekend, said playing three pre-season matches was the ideal preparation for him before round one of the premiership season.

"I find … you probably need three solid games and that's what 'Knighter' has worked with us," Welsh said.

"If we get three solid games in before the start of the season – that's a good base for us and we get enough match preparation and knowledge of our new structures and new teammates that we think we need going into the season."

Meanwhile, Welsh said skipper Matthew Lloyd, who is battling a hamstring problem, is "excited as ever to return" and will be back in a "couple of weeks" before the season proper.

...... So what sounds like the usual preseason rubbish. "The boys are really training hard... fitter than ever... going to win the flag, one last time for Lucas... before he retires in the next 7 years... BUt hopefully i'm wrong and Knighta will make a difference. In skill especially.

I think you were reading a different article....

Merv, I merly making a generalisation of what all clubs do during preseason (pumping up their team, to make sure they sell memberships, even if the team has had quite a few injuries). The Lucas thing was just an exageration of what happens every year, something to give supporters hope in... often false hope.

I understand what you were saying but when you start out with "so what, sounds like the usual preseason rubbish" seems like you are saying you don't want these articles posted here.

Then you quoted things that weren't in the article, i know you were generalizing, hence my response.

It's not just another preseason either, as many supporters have never seen another coach at Essendon.

Someone let me in on the joke.

What will Don35 have to say about this?

Ordinary small 3 in defence, slow midfield, good forward line.

Why is it that Andrew Welsh is considerred in our best 18. He's an ordinary player who has been the centre of our mediocrity for too long now.

Andrew Welsh is undoubtedly the most over-rated player at Essendon for the last 20 years.

He consistently turns the ball over both by hand and foot and inevitably costs us goals at the other end.

The bottom line is that if we are relying on Welsh as part of a core player group to take us to a position of strength then we are kidding. Trade him now while for some reason someone may want to give up something for him.

He has been the posterboy for Essendons mediocrity for 4 years. Get him out of the system and give someone else a go.

Word is the Dons won't trade Welsh.

We really are kidding ourselves with this bloke. I am sick to death of people suggesting how tough and skillful he is.... Get a grip.

With regard to his skills, i'd love to see the stats on turnovers. He'd be right up the top somewhere. It's not just that he turns it over, it's how scared he looks when there's people around him.

A real shocker. Get rid of him.

Petty he can't play!

And no wonder he bought you a beer, he's the most overpaid and over rated player in the league.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on here already but Welsh was on Nova yesterday with Hughes and Kate.

Of course hughey and kate aint exactly the most in depth interviewers so essentially he repeated all the normal "things are going great" routine, plus talking about how Sheeds would chat to him for an hour and he wouldnt have a clue what sheeds was on about.

The one intereting comment he made was that last year when Lloyd kicked the goal of the year back heel goal that this was something that Kevin Sheedy had made several of the players practice at training one day.

They also pesetered Welsh about Paris Hilton, Welshy trying to deny everything and play it all down..
