Stupid question. Although I don't rate Bowden as high as many others do, he is twice the player Jacobs is, and always will be.

bowden is a genuine playmaker....end of story....2 b&f on the trot.

jacobs is a good player but not a star that id hang up on a poster above my bed back when i was a wee lad....he is made to look a lot more acomplished when he teams up with fellow backmen such a s zac dawson....bluuuggghhhh!!

Go sit on the bottom of the ladder some more ;)

Jacobs, an ordinary ordinary player, would not even come close to the selectors minds when all australian comes around, reject hack, the next jonathan hay, played hawkas

i feel dumber for seeing that 6 people think that Jacobs is better then J Bowden, he isnt even in the same league

This could just be you, naturally.
do you think that Jacobs is better then Bowden or even close? If you do think so i trully feel for you and please for the good of man dont have kids

Both are very ordinary "defenders". They play in the backline but are not "defenders", often see their direct opponents influencing games.

Bowden>>>Clement>>>>>>>>>>>Presti/Jacobs

IMO

Bowden > Clement........LOL. Hilarious stuff :thumbsu:

It's understandable that Carlton fans would have trouble recognising a good defender. They can't even remember what it's like to not have 11 extra blokes in the back half trying to cover for the 6 inept guys that started there!

Bowden isnt an ordinary defender, his role in defence is to make the play but when he has to take a key post he holds his own against J. Brown and others

OK.....Joel Bowden has been put into a position because of injuries that he is not suited for.....picking up key position footballers. This much is accepted. And yes...two years ago he did have a good game against Jonathon Brown (the night Shultz kicked 6).

But the fact remains that he was moved onto Riewoldt in the fourth quarter against the Saints and Riewoldt proceeded to take over the game; Lance Whitnall was the most dominant player on the ground in the first quarter against JB before being moved back. Jarrod Waite, coming off inuries, then kicked three against him and should have kicked six if he held easy marks. Jonathon Brown was Brisbanes best player by a mile against Richmond; Scott Lucas almost won the game for Essendon in the final quarter whilst Joel let Lucas roam anywhere he wanted mostly unattended through the first three quarters; and finally, Barry Hall tore him a new one for 100 minutes of football.

Now Joel should not have to play on these guys because he is incapable or unwilling to stick tight with players of this calibre. However, he has been forced to and failed. Yet people look at his stats and figure he is dominating and should be up for All-Australian honours. This IMO is simply untrue.

It bugs me that he gets more plaudits than Richo who has to work three times as hard for his possessions, has three times more influence on a game and cops three times as much crap when things don't go right for him.

agreed, this poll is to point out to a fool of a hawthorn fan who believes quite the opposite.

So why don't I start a poll for "Darren Gaspar or Trent Croad"
For all those Richmond fans who don't realise he's over the hill and has been for the past 2 years at least.

Does it make you feel better that you won, Joel Bowden is better, we get it.

This poll is pointless, I wanna know which Hawthorn fan compared the two in the first place. It's obvious who is the better defender, Bowden is willing to actually go for the hard ball and Danny Jacobs foot skills are hopeless if you watched the game against Essendon it was as if he was still playing for them the ammount of clangers and kicks that favoured Essendon out of defence. Bowden has won the last two best and fairest at Richmond.

Joel Bowden was all australian on the HB line with Croad and Hodge, why not a poll comparing them? A poll that might actually have some useful debate, oh wait that wasn't what you were after.

If you're talking about B&F awards, then maybe you're right as Richo is yet to win one which is ridiculous. However if you're talking about the general concensus with fans, you're wrong. I, and many others believe Richo is generally more important to Richmond winning games than Bowden, but the run and creativity Bowden provides from the half-back line cannot be matched by any other Richmond player, and is absolutely vital. Just look at the end of the Essendon game, yeah he let through goals on Lucas and that's because he shouldn't play key position backman, but along with giving goals up he set up the winning play. Not to mention the fact that for a long time he was the only decent player who could kick in our backline (obviously Cameron too) and without him all Richmond would have had is Gaspar turning the ball over when trying to clear from defence.

This was exactly my point.
The reason this thread was started was that Roostertalk came to the Hawthorn Board and was aksing how we would play Barry Hall this weekend. They then went on to tell us about how Bowden had played him and lost. And i simply stated my disdain for his defensive abilities - as you've summarised above - and how he constantly racks up uncontested possessions. This of course didn't sit well with RT.
This poll proves nothing and certainly wont change my opinion on the matter.

Both :D:D:D:D players but Bowden gets my nod merely for the fact he racks up lots of points for my dream team as he's always by himself where no one can touch him or make him pull his head in, resembles a turtle whenever he's in a contested situation. Got the guts of an easter egg.
