There is more to it than that isn't there. Wasn't part of the underlying theme that it was a poor irish farmer against the english police and politicians? I think this has made him an australian icon (icon more than hero) because it typifies the "little aussie battler" refusing to give up against the greater odds. Chuck into the mix the armour to help give the tale some legs.

Yeah, I'm aware of the 'legend' of Ned Kelly. To me the true Aussie hero has always been the Digger. But that's just me.

Yeah, that is why I chose not to call him a hero and went with icon instead. I probably could have stuck with infamous.

I agree with the diggers being the real heros they also made for better movies as well. Ned Kelly staring Mick Jagger is a crap idea but the light horsemen and gallipoli are great movies.
