If we didn't get a priority pick at the end of 2013, Brisbane shouldn't get one now. We were much worse than they are now.

Gotta love Melbourne fans after the AFL picked them out of a hole while providing generous gifts with free agency compensation and dodgy bidding for one of their best midfielders in Viney.

If they are smart they should trade this priority pick for 2 or 3 mid range seasoned players...Brisbane needs to build some football steel into their team before they recruit another young gun who never develops because of a poor work environment.

The AFL are likely to just give you a PP and say "job done".

Pointless on its own imo. Band-aid on a severed arm. If things aren't changed across many facets then that kid will definitely go. If we're able to get closer in parity to other clubs off the field though we have a better chance of keeping them and just accelerate the long rebuild we face.

So .. here's the issue. AFL revenues based on TV rights. If membership and crowds continue to collapse in a non-AFL state, is that a problem for the AFL ? Empty grounds, one sided games with massive % boosts, player exodus, joke status etc .. will fans really care ? Having witnessed the rapid abandonment of Fitzroy by AFL and other clubs - remember the Tigers' response ? - in 95/96 , I have no faith in any establishment pronouncements. Does Qld really care about the collapse of AFL ? I recall the Vic s******ing during the Super League saga - total schadenfreude.

The struggles of non-AFL state clubs is a different proposition that that of Vic / SA / WA clubs. Clearly. There are 4. Who is going to put their house on GWS or the Suns continuing without major issues ? Do you believe that the locals will suddenly become converts to 'our great game' ? Sydney has been on its knees a few times. And they are THE lynchpin in AFL strategy. They must not collapse in that market, esp. as soccer is making great progress. Gold Coast has a long history of sporting club failures so no faith there. Time to get the Royboys down to Tassie where at least there is appropriate passion.

Any time a club hits rock bottom like Brisbane have this season there's far more wrong than the playing personnel.

Can never understand how the AFL come to the conclusion that the best way to assist that situation is to expose more young A grade talent to that toxic environment.

I'd be disappointed if the AFL gave a priority pick before those issues are addressed at Brisbane.

Get your tinfoil hat off, Viney was never rated at 3 or above, and we got FA compo under the same rules as any other team for losing our best KPP.
Brisbane need help with replacing all their staff like we did, not a PP.

How about if they attempted to address them simultaneously?

Ah - remember this ?

Early in the 2000 season the AFL had reviewed the recruiting concessions offered to the Brisbane Lions which in previous years had seen them claim Steven Lawrence (1993), Jason Akermanis (1994), Danny Dickfos, Brett Voss and Derek Wirth (1995).

Without fully realising the impact of their decision, the League initially imposed a 50km recruiting radius from Brisbane, which would exclude Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast players.

Andrew Ireland, Lions’ CEO at the time, asked that the rule be changed, arguing that if there was a perception that Queenslanders had to leave home to follow their AFL aspirations it was a dis-incentive to play the game in the Sunshine State. “It is a question of doing the right thing for AFL football in Queensland,” he said.

According to football folklore, when the error was pointed out to the AFL they had intended to rectify the problem because it made simple sense to include all areas that formed part of the Queensland State Football League competition.

But when Ian Collins, AFL General Manager – Football Operations, left the League to take charge of Colonial Stadium, now Etihad Stadium, the paperwork was never completed.

Then, as the season wore on and after Riewoldt starred at the Australian U18 Championships, the Queensland recruiting concession became more an issue of personality rather than principle.

It didn’t matter that the concession was intended to provide a mechanism for Queenslanders to follow their AFL dream without leaving home. Rival clubs were intent on making sure the Lions didn’t get first crack at potentially the best Queenslander since Michael Voss, as Riewoldt was rated at the time.

Allow me to explain. Because clearly you've got no idea what your on about. The reason we got pick 3 for Frawley was because of the size and length of the contract he signed with Hawthorn. Not because the AFL felt sorry for us. We picked up Viney by bidding pick 26 and nobody decided to match it. Not like we cheated

Priority picks would have to be one of the most archaic ideas in sport in Australia. The problem is never solely talent. The Lions have a crap coach, weak leadership, poor facilities and a playing group that can't even muster up effort, the baseline of sport at any level.

Lets say the Lions had gotten a priority pick last year and picked up Weitering. Does anyone think this year would have panned out differently for them?

Prepare to be disappointed.

Despite how bad Brisbane have been, they are still not Melbourne 2013. No PP.

Perhaps we could set up a separate thread for the wonderfully insightful JeffDune to continue his decade long trolling of the Brisbane Lions and Lions supporters.

Jeff could then dazzle us all with his marketing and management expertise that he so obviously has in spades. Of course most normal people would be free to ignore the ridiculous interactions that involve:
- the setting up of straw men
- constantly moving the goal posts
- pretending to engage in the discussion, but really just trying to set up his next trolling attempt
- repeating his underlying premise ad nauseam
- yet never attempting to actually engage in underlying issues, but instead just repeating simplistic mantras to try and shut down debate
- attempting to portray himself as an expert with his all knowing all foreseeing abilities
- and of course, pretending he doesn't have an underlying hatred of the Brisbane Lions (and even for Fitzroy for some weird reason - go figure hey?)

That would leave the rest of BigFooty some slight space to actually discuss these issues as opposed to a large proportion of these Lions threads on the main board taken up with Jeff's trolling and Lions supporters replying.

Funny thing is people aren't really that wrong when they say "it's all your fault", except maybe with the retention stuff, but whatever.

Problem is you can assign blame all you want for financial decisions the club made a decade ago but that doesn't actually work to solve the problem we face.

If somebody has a feasible model for the club to get itself out of this hole without outside assistance I'd honestly love to hear it and I'm sure the club would too. I think the reality that permeates through pretty much any evaluation of this club's prospects is that these problems we face run deep.

The harsh reality is the club can either get assistance from the AFL now or cease to exist.

"Your fault lol" isn't a valid reason to deny assistance that in every other aspect; is unequivocally called for. Just the reality of the situation.

Any club that finds itself in a bad situation is going to be their own fault. It's a stupid argument from stupid people.

I usually am when the AFL start dabbling in competition rigging.

Look at the bright side, we might be drafting another Billy Longer who could up and leave to St.Kilda in 2 years because of our shit culture and your awesome culture - win/win for you ;)

Agreed, you've been there before and back now. I better listen. No arguments from me.

Draft another Billy Longer with a PP and it will be a win-win for 17 other clubs let alone St Kilda.
