The lure of playing for a famous and big club is massive. Buckley should be admired for his overriding loyalty to Collingwood, but it will cost him big time in the end. Could've had 3 premiership medals as a player had he stayed at Brisbane. Even after his playing career ended at Collingwood, he could've gone elsewhere and made a name for himself as a coach just like Barassi post Melbourne, Sheedy post Richmond, Malthouse (not in Buckley's league as a player) post Richmond.

Eddie couldn't bear to see Buckley at another club and went about transitioning from a successful experienced coach to a novice. You don't remove a coach when he has the club at the pointy end of the ladder. Buckley could've put his own stamp on another team that changed coaches because they were not performing, as did Hardwick.

As it stands, I can't see Buckley surviving at Collingwood. Don't expect Collingwood to be playing finals in 2021, and without Eddie, Buckley will be skating on thin ice.
well brisbane at the time was a bit of a basketcase, it wasn't until 1999 when things started to look up...

Think his record as a coach is solid but he is so much part of Collingwood, unsure he could get a job elsewhere
well, if this had happen 12 month earlier then we might have taken him. In fact we tried to recruit bucks before we got brad, in fact it was out poaching attempt that got them to intiate the succession plan that ultimately destroyed their dynasty.

Do you think North fans would want him now?

not with the systemic racism thing hanging over his entire tenure at the club, and his grinning presser discrediting Lamumba.

Unemployable, at the top level at least, but once he does his time he will be much sought after in the TV footy media imo.

Is there an assistant coach at the Pies that would be an obvious choice to take over if Buckley doesn't complete the season?

I imagine Buckley's position may not be tenable past the Lamumba case- is that scheduled for this year? If so, Bucks should do the right thing and walk now?

gotta be at the right place at the right time.
Buckley was one of my favourite players, shame he did not win a flag, Richo comes to mind.

The Buckley one might meet privately can be a real smart alec, a sniggerer, is it me he is sniggering at?, not much of a players' man despite improvements.

The Buckley one encounters packaged in the media, espesh with Gerbil, sorry, Gerald, oops, Gerard, is wise, sincere, thoughtful. His media gigs have improved him, but the smart arse still lifts its head time to time.

Sincerity can't be manufactured. People aren't fools all the time.

Sadly, given Collingwood has fallen away since their near miss in 2018 I think Nathan Buckley might be inducted into the Pete Best Club when his coaching tenure at the Magpies ends.

What is the Pete Best Club? Named after the Beatles original drummer who was replaced by Ringo Starr in 1962 before the band hit it big, it's a special club for players who agonizingly missed out on premierships (despite having opportunities) throughout their career on multiple occasions and never won one; players who switched clubs and had their former or future teams put a stop to their premiership dreams in the finals or players who arrived at or departed a club a year late or a year early.

Players like Rene Kink, Derek Kickett, Greg Tate, Brendon Whitecross, Brett Delidio, Jason McCartney, Barry Young, Travis Gaspar, Ashley Sampi, Matthew Clarke and Gary Ablett Senior would all be eligible for the Pete Best Club. In the SANFL Ralph Sewer (Glenelg, Woodville) and Gavin Conville (WWT Eagles) would all qualify, while Derek Chadwick from WAFL club East Perth would also be a walk up start for membership of the Pete Best Club.

This is GOLD! Buckley deserves a wing named after him.

Have a strong feeling Buckley will leave footy destined not to win a flag as a player or coach in the AFL.
Don’t dislike the guy and would be happy for him to miss out being a port man.
Thoughts?
Nathan Buckley was a premiership hero for the Port Adelaide Magpies
In 1992, at the age of 20, he won the Magarey Medal, the Jack Oatey Medal and Port's best and fairest in their premiership year
But speaking "as a Port man", you say you are happy for him to never win another flag in his lifetime

Port fans are a weird mob.

Sheed misses that goal from the boundary and Collingwood wins the flag, then almost everyone would consider Buckley one of the top 4 or 5 coaches in the AFL.

Just like the ball bounces normally for Milney in 2010 and Ross Lyon would be considered one of the greatest coaches of the modern era. (Or his teams win 2009 or 2013 for that matter. 2009 led every change and lost the lead 24m mark 4thQ).

Further- 2002, Norm Smith Medal and almost beat a Brisbane team who were incomparably more talented. Buckley could easily have a flag each as a player and coach.
And if the dog didn't stop for a wee we may have had rabbit for dinner!:moustache:

Not after we got david noble, absolutely not but if it was shaw and buckly, we take buckley at an instant. Rhyce shaw's standout highlight was being chaesd by lynch, got the ball taken, snapped around the corner for an easy goal. Buckley as a person is the ultra professional running machine. Buckley the person probably would suit far better at north due to the club culture and the players we had. It took buckly like 6 years to finally gel with the club....Buckley's hard persona would be far better at north because buckley could have ziebell and cunnington as leaders to rely on.

Under noble, we have someone far superior. A master list manager and a superior tactician. Also he is in 50s, meaning plenty of life experience and how to handle failure. Coinciding the fact that the club is in the best shape ever off the field, which is ironic considering we had the worst season ever but had the best recruitment haul. Another top 10 mid will complete the team.

If buckley's career is to end, then its quite unfortunate because he just got caught in the whole saga, not of his doing. I wouldn't say buckley is any more racist than the next white collingwood player. Even Eddie, i don't think he is any more racist than your typical 1970s white aussie bloke. These people simply don't get it, and you can't force them to simply get it. They really don't even know how to pretend. Remember, aus is not as sophisticated as the USA or UK where politicans can pretend their way through. Just look at BIden, Pelosi, these people are as racial supremacist as there are yet they are champions of racial justice, equality and inclusiveness.

It's not unfortunate he could've done something but chose not to.

Buckley unfortunately is one of the GOAT candidate who just missed out on everything. He went to the wrong team as a player and coach, game over.

Favourite sons becoming coaches at their home club, has been a real mixed bag.

What is usually misding is a solid apprenticeship. It worked for Woosha and I have a good feeling about Sam Mitchell. But Voss, Buckley and Hird all came up short.

Voss should have maintained his offer to ve a WC senior assistant. He's done well at Port and shoukd definitely get another crack at the top job. True motivator and it'd be a waste if he didn't. Young coaches like Simmo, striking out at another club, seems a better bet.
