I operated on the premise that Melbourne will not pick Watts with their #1 selection. I did this to create some variation from the other phantom drafts, and also I feel it is a very real possibility.

1st Round

1. Melbourne - Naitanui
With the athletic ability/potential of Nick, combined with Melbourne's average ruck department, he will be the first player selected.

2. West Coast - Rich
As Melbourne selected Nait, they just made the WC recruiters' job a whole lot easier. Rich it is, to strengthen what is currently an underwhelming midfield.

3. Fremantle - Hartlett
With a reletively strong forward line in place, Fremantle will pass on Watts in an attempt to further strengthen their midfield with the addition of Hartlett.

4. Port Adelaide - Vickery
Vickery will be the man to take over from Lade, and in doing so will fill a void for the PAFC.

5. Essendon - Watts
With the Lloyd and Lucas era drawing to a close, in conjunction with Gumbleton's injury concerns, Essendon will select Watts as part of a succession plan for their forward line.

6. Carlton - Hurley
There is no question Carlton needs a Key Defender, and a quality one at that. For this reason, they will roll with Hurley.

7. Brisbane - Ziebell
Brisbane will be looking to revitalise their midfield, and Ziebell is the best midfielder available at this pick.

8. Richmond - Johnston
This will be a difficult decision for the Tigers, but I feel they will look to enhance their forward line with Richo aging, as well as the fact the other options they currently possess in this area are still largely unproven. Johnston will be their selection for these reasons, coupled with the fact he's the best remained KPF option.

9. Collingwood - Sidebottom
He's a good fit for the Collingwood midfield due to this skillset, and coupled with Burns' career drawing to a close, he would be a logical selection for Collingwood.

10. North Melbourne - Swift
North Melbourne will suprise everyone with a move for Swift. Despite the risk surrounding him and his injury problems, he is highly rated and could be one of the better players to come out of this draft. The club could also use some midfield reinforcements.

11. Sydney - McKernan
An easy choice for Sydney given their need to improve their forward line coupled with the impending departure of Everitt.

12. Adelaide - Suban
I think he's a good choice for Adelaide, especially considering McLeod is aging and there has been some talk about Johncock's future.

13. St. Kilda - Trengove
With Max getting older, and a need for quality defenders, I think they will select Trengove here.

14. Western Bulldogs- Cordy
Working on the assumption no other club makes a play for him, Cordy should be taken here.

15. Hawthorn - Lisle
I think Hawthorn's biggest weakness is defence, and Lisle can go some way towards enhancing that area of their squad.

16. Geelong - Yarran
Geelong will be tempted by Yarran here. They could use another crumber especially given the fact Varcoe probably hasn't come on as well as they would have hoped. He also has the potential to move into the midfield.

Priority Picks

17. Melbourne - Blease
Although they are yet to select a KPF, with Cornelius and Cahill still around, Melbourne will look to inject some pace into a slow midfield.

18. West Coast - Hill
The Eagles will go with Hill, not only will he enhance their midfield, but he should complement Rich well in the future.

As always, your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Thanks for reading ;)

Great to see someone thinking outside the square, but I just can't see Watts dropping to 5, sorry.

5. Essendon - Watts
With the Lloyd and Lucas era drawing to a close, in conjunction with Gumbleton's injury concerns, Essendon will select Watts as part of a succession plan for their forward line.

You little beauty..! :D

He's a strong chance to go number one and a certain top 3 pick if he decides to nominate, so unfortunately in real life, I don't think we've got a chance in hell.

6. Carlton - Hurley
There is no question Carlton needs a Key Defender, and a quality one at that. For this reason, they will roll with Hurley.
We need a quick midfielder/HFF who is a clearance player and a great kick more than we need a key defender.

However, I would pick Hurley more for our forwardline than our backline and to give us more versatility and weapons.

Yep we would be happy with vickery

14. Western Bulldogs- Cordy
Working on the assumption no other club makes a play for him, Cordy should be taken here.
Wrong. If no other club nominates Cordy with their first round pick then why on earth would we take him with our first round pick when we can use a 2nd or 3rd rounder? If a club does put up their first round pick for him then he will be taken with our first rounder.

Exactly. The only way the Bulldogs will pick Cordy with their first pick is if a team does make a play for him.

Good job but i'm looking forward to reading about some new names in the next few mock drafts. Hopefully BigFooty group-think is not in operation again this year.

Good point, I made a error there through absense of mind. In any case, I still think he'll go here after the process has been completed.

Thanks.

That's why I didn't pick Watts at #1, so that I could get an alternate order to what most people have posted so far. In terms of further difference, I think you may see some variation in order, but for the most part the names should be pretty similar.

When will we find out if Watts has nominated? When do nominations for the National Draft close?

Nice work. As we'd have pick 9 I'd take Sidebottom or Ziebell (if he's avail.)

FYI, current draft order.

1. Melbourne
2. West Coast
3. Fremantle
4. Port Adelaide
5. Essendon
6. Carlton
7. Brisbane
8. Richmond
9. North Melbourne
10. Adelaide
11. Collingwood*
12. Sydney
13. St. Kilda
14. Western Bulldogs
15. Hawthorn
16. Geelong

*From this point onward, order is subject to further change.

I'd say Sydney would be the most likely to, but St. Kilda and perhaps even Adelaide may also table a bid.

If he's as good as i've heard, i'm happy for the club to get him with their first pick. Decent forward/ruck is just what the doctor ordered, to bad we'll have to wait at least 3 seasons for Cordy to blossom.

I would agree with both aspects of your post. He is worth your first round pick, although it will take a while for him to develop given his size and current physical attributes. He is certainly the type of player the Bulldogs need, so he will prove a good selection for the club.

So which club/clubs do you think will nominate him?

Surely a club will nominate just to ensure we use our first pick on him. I know we are very keen on him, I'm sure all the other recruiting manager know that as well

Sydney would be my bet, maybe even St.Kilda.

So the Bulldogs should tank this week to make sure they finish below those teams, so they only have to use their second round pick on him...? ;)
