Just a thought, after sitting through tonights game, that with the possible, and i say possible retirement of burnsy, surely there are only 2 choices.

The 2 standout choices are;

DANE SWAN

NICK MAXWELL

Pendles isnt quite up to captaincy material yet, and Josh is better off without that pressure, and there is no one else.

Id choose Swanny based on consistency, and leadership, and overall contribution to the team.

Gotta love him, even with us gettin beaten easily tonight, he stood tall and lead from the front.

Yeah, I'd prefer to delist/retire a mix of veterans and spuds, not all veterans. If we get rid of Wakes AND Burns, I'll be very sad. :(

Even if Burns does go on he'd have to hand it over given the ammount of time his missed this year.

Even with the amount of games he has missed (anyone have the amount?) I would still choose him to lead the boys over some of the others. He has proved himself this year now let him enjoy it.

Probably why we chased Johnathon Brown. Beyond Burns, there is not one player we could confidently choose as captian. All thanks to those numerous years of dreadful drafting.

at least with nick maxwell (granted not a great player- a solid one though) you always get a 100% effort.. puts his body on the line and never gives up...a bit like harley.. i dont think harley is that good of a footballer either but has the mental toughness required to be captain...

having watched cloke tonight (and his delivery was appalling) he would not be a great leader.. with a body like his he should have busted some bodies tonight...

id love to see big pebs captain next year... and we can wait for dawes to fill into his role as fututre capatin...

Agree,
We don't have a standout leader after Burns. We have several players that have been at the club for a while so I guess by default they are in the leadership group and from that become possible Captains.

Unless Burns has retired there is no reason why he shouldn't be captain in 09.

^i wouldnt be that pessimistic. if heath shaw hadnt of screwed up, he would definately be a great option.

I'm of this opinion too. He just commands such power on the field, leads by voice and action, would have made a perfect leader.

I can't see Dane Swan getting it, based on a few things. He is a noted part of the party boy group and has already had his past problems with the law / the booze. He doesn't seem to possess any outstanding leadership qualities, I think he just goes about his business and if others don't follow then that is their bad luck.
The other thing that deters me, and I've heard it a lot, is that Swan doesn't have a HUGE passion for the game... He sees it as just that, a game. I don't doubt his dedication or anything, and I completely understand where he comes from. Football is his job, he will never live and breath it like say, Nathan Buckley.

I personally think Maxwell and Fraser will end up sharing it if Burns doesn't go on (although I think he will), purely because there really just isn't much else on offer.

pendles not yet ready...

cant beleieve maxwells name is coming up again,

i swear this year is such a de ja vu of the last...

dane swan or tarkyn lockyer for mine

Lockyer is struggling to be in the best 22, and if some of the youngsters keep improving then I don't think he will be next year.

I really hope Burnsy stays on and is captain for one more year. We need him to carry us through the transition of our list for another year.

Pendles is the stand-out choice, followed by Cloke and Harry.
I'm not sure if Swanny would be the best captain. He's still one of the boys (don't mean that negatively). Heath Shaw is far and away our best on-field leader but wouldn't cope with the media work too well.
Josh has the media part down but struggles to impose himself on games - though his last month has been excellent.

Burnsy for another year, then Pendles.

I pretty much agree with the above.

That's borderline trolling. :(
I actually just came on here to post a link to the same article.

Pretty gutted here. Geez we're going to have a young list next year, if Wakes and Burns who are both 33 make way.

Another HUN article quotes MM as saying he expects one of our senior defenders in Wakes and Presti to go on, so either way, we're going to lose a 30-something defender and you'd think it's Wakes.

Completely agree about being gutted if Burns called it a day, especially if he immediately ended up at another club in an assistant coaching role.

I've been able to handle the loss last night and we've all survived a pretty tumultuous season, but losing Burns would cut as deeply as losing Buckley in my mind. I'm hoping he can go around for one more year, although I would understand if he didn't.

If he does decide to retire, then I don't mind whether he takes a coaching role next year, that's immaterial to me.

Again, if he does retire, I think we've got to bite the bullet and go with Pendles as captain, possibly with Ben Cousins as a mentor for the on-field and training day side of things.

Guys,
If i hear another collingwood supporter putting up Josh Frasers name for Captain i will scream.. he doesn't have the attributes to be captain. He has minimal impact on games and doesn't inspire on the field...
Burnsy won'y retire. In games he has played this year he has been sensational. He means so much to our young kids, and i am sure MM would be busting burnsys balls to go around just one more year (even if it is for only 14 games or so).
Fingers crossed we can get cousins for next year, he would be huge for Pendles in the middle..

At least St. Kilda finishing on top of us now means we have one less threat. Or has all the conjecture about him going to St. Kilda stabilised?

It will be devastating if Burns does hang up his boots...

Agree 100%

If Burns retires, all other options bar Pendles for captain will not make much sense. I also would think that someone such as Cousins could very well assist in a mentor role. Another point here is perhaps Burns will decide that he will play one more season however knows in his body he won't play 22 and therefore relinquishing the captaincy to Pendlebury. He could realistically play a similar mentor role and ease the transition.

Pendles for me if Burnsy does retire,
Cloke and Maxwell his deputees

I'm of the opinion that being captain is an overrated status. You don't have to be the captain to lead by example and you don't have to be the best player or the loudest player. It doesn't bother me who is captain (as long as it is not Fraser) because the blokes that want to step up and lead by example will do so regardless of who is captain.
