Amazing story. Roughy motivated me to get a skin cancer check (and thankfully so as found a melanoma and had it removed). The Dr explained to me a bit about the Melanoma Roughy had. Stage 4 and in his lungs. As little as 6 years ago there was no treatment for what he had and a 2% survival rate. The new treatment he was given was described by the Dr as nothing short of a "miracle". And all the more amazing that he is now back playing and in fact gonna lead the Club in 2017. Truly an amazing journey. An absolute inspiration. Good luck Roughie!!!!

Ridiculously awesome on so many levels. Firstly the story of Roughy's extraordinary recovery. Most medical people I spoke to gave him very little chance of playing again. The new treatments are truly miracle drugs and that he looks set to play round 1 as a captain is just extraordinary. What a great day for a great man.

Secondly he will be a terrific captain. His teammates love him, fans love him and opponents respect / fear him. He lifts his team with his aggression.

Thirdly no other candidates were ready to lead. If Rough can lead for 2-3 years we will hopefully have other leaders emerge.

Hodge has been the best captain I've seen. He will continue to lead in his final season while handing official duties over to the Rough. Great story. Great club

Inspirational choice - step up as the next Premiership Captain, Number 2 Jarryd Roughead

You took the words right out of my mouth, BH.:thumbsu::fire:

If this doesn't say we are serious about a prmiership assault this year, nothing does. Congratulations Rough, great choice by the club.

This is a real testament to Roughy's character. We've been lucky to have so many wonderful leaders at the club during Clarko's reign.

Pretty much lock in 90,000 for round 1. The return of Roughead as captain of the mighty fighting Hawks to take on the returning Essendon dopers. It will be huge for the game.

Congratulations to Roughie. I still remember going down to training late in the 2005 season when Hawthorn was still training at Glenferrie Oval and watching an 18 year old Jarryd Roughead and an 18 year old Lance Franklin throwing mud at each other in between drills. Somewhere in one my drawers at home I have an old HSBC-sponsored Hawthorn guernsey with the signatures of Roughead and Franklin with #35 and #38 respectively on it.

In the intervening 12 years, Roughie has had much success on and off the field, but has had to contend with some devastating set-backs (torn Achilles tendon in 2011 which arguably changed the course of that season after Roughead was having a career year alternating between forward and ruck, the first cancer scare in 2015 and then having to miss the entire 2016 season with a knee injury and the reoccurrence of his cancer, which again arguably altered the course of the 2016 season as it robbed Hawthorn of its key forward and talisman).

What a wonderful way to start the 2017 season. I hope Roughie has much personal and team success in the next few seasons.

Congratulations also to Liam Shiels and Isaac Smith for being named vice-captains.

There was a meeting of players in the middle today and much clapping etc. I wondered if something like this would be finally announced.

It certainly shows the HFC have much confidence in Roughy being on-field more than off it. I hope he has a really good return season.

Geez, just watched the live stream of his press conference on the Hawks website... gotta say, he really didn't want to be there.

Mind you, he had just come from the training track but still, was very short with his answers.

Was super defensive when asked how his knee was going. He replied by asking if the reporter watched him at training just then and what did he think. The reporter said he thought Rough was moving very well and Rough just said, "yep, thanks mate".

Personally I can't stand the media around AFL footy for the most part so I was actually loving it, and also keeping in mind he had just come off the track and hadn't even had time to call his wife before being swamped with questions (most of which were pointless like usual), BUT, as captain of the club now I hope he gets used to this sort of thing because it's only going to get more intense now.

Well done Rough :thumbsu:
Well done Hodgie :thumbsu:

I wrote earlier that Silk put forward the thought of having another player become skipper while Hodge was still playing
Silk's choice was Shiels, but having it be Rough just fits so beautifully

Just imagine running out with Rough as skipper after what he's been through!
Wow!

well played Hawthorn & well played Hodgey - he just always does the right thing. When no 15 decides to give it away what a huge hole it will leave in our side/club.

Lets hope we have a plan for him moving forward that doesn't include swapping him to Freo for pick 102 ;)
