Carlton or Richmond. Which club has more supporters?

I'm not suggesting we'll be bigger than Richmond but we've consistently been around 6th/7th highest since 2006 and that was before winning multiple Premierships.

Currently have over 80k members and growing. It's not big 4 level but it's nothing to shake your head at.
Not bad for a "regional team"
And that's the exact attitude which generates respect. Not all this derogatory bollocks that others seem to want to throw around at Richmond (or anyone else ftm). Nice work FL.

The largest attendance ever recorded for a single day event at the MCG was the Billy Graham Crusade in 1959 with a total of 130,000

120k is for minnows, seems the other religion? has outdone football.
How many watched the stream? ZERO!!!

Watch the member numbers next year. Carlton will smash the tigers in memberships.
The bandwagon support of both sides is huge. Essendon who have had no success and frankly an embarrassing 20 years will have more members than Richmond.
Fair chance by 2025 we will have more than Richmond also.

The big 4 are the big 4 for a reason, all big clubs have a big bandwagon but we only made 1 of the last 3 finals and still have a legitimate 100k members (as in paid for membership which is no longer required), we were also the first club back in 1980 to get 1 million through the gates in a year, so I think we'll be okay.

Right back at you, no need for people to get feisty.
We are all footy fans first at the end of the day and the more footy fans there are the better it is!

I can say I always enjoyed our Finals matchups, not the level of hostility that we hold towards Hawthorn but we had some classic matchups that will stand the test of time.

Who has more supporters? How idiotic and narrow minded
Carlton easily have more supporters than Richmond in SA.
Not sure about WA.
Richmond probably have more supporters in NT and Tasmania.
No idea about NSW or ACT.
Carlton probably have more supporters in QLD.

Diamonds (Richmond) in the dung (Carlton).

Probably goes:
Coll
Ess/Carl
Rich

Rich as big as any of them when winning. I’m just not sure the Tigers can handle years of poor performances and remain huge like the other 3 can.
That’s the real test. Are they already losing touch?

The most hated club and fans in the AFL survey last week was interesting.

1. Coll 24.5%
2. Ess 14.1%
3. Carl 14.0%

7. Rich 4.2%
I think you will find that WC smack them all.

True.

However, years of failure have diluted people’s recall of how big the Bombers and Blues are. They play games at Marvel which creates an imbalance when crowd statistics are quoted.

I’d suggest an era of success will recalibrate and overturn recency bias. In a national scale. Due to their larger followings across Australia (outside Victoria), Essendon and Carlton have greater support than Richmond.

But true, Eagles support in Perth makes all clubs look small in their home markets.

Richmond made a PF in 2001, then didn’t make finals again until 2013… here is where they’ve been placed on H&A attendances from 2001 onwards:

2001: 3rd
2002: 4th
2003: 4th
2004: 6th
2005: 6th
2006: 3rd
2007: 3rd
2008: 4th
2009: 5th
2010: 6th
2011: 4th
2012: 5th
2013: 2nd
2014: 5th
2015: 1st (finished 5th)
2016: 2nd (finished 13th)
2017: 1st
2018: 1st
2019: 2nd
2021: 1st (finished 12th)
2022: 3rd
2023: 3rd (finished 13th)

So without a finals win for 3-years and 2 x bottom-8 finishes, still top-3 for attendances and over 100k members every year.

But it’s a ‘bandwagon’ supporter base …🤣🤣

We have more supporters than Richmond according to Roy Morgan and going past them in memberships would be icing on the cake.

It’s so funny hearing other supporter groups accuse Richmond of being bandwagon supporters… Cats H&A attendances:

2003: 15th
2004: 12th
2005: 10th
2006: 11th
2007: 10th
2008: 6th
2009: 6th
2010: 4th
2011: 6th (jumped off after a 2010 PF thumping)
2012: 6th

The city of greater Geelong alone has 275,000. Then there’s the metro supporter base. How they remain tens of thousands of members behind Richmond given their success and a flag in 2022 is extraordinary really.

And if you want evidence of a bandwagon supporter base, look no further than the H&A attendances of the Cats … 10-15th in attendances before sustained success kicked in.

So if Roy Morgan tells us you have more supporters, your membership numbers and attendances are embarrassing.

Carlton and Essendon play at a stadium that in reality can only hold 45,000. Crowd comparisons are irrelevant.

Majority of our fans are theatregoers who don't take the game too seriously.
We're similar to Melbourne in that aspect.
Attend one of our games at Kardinia Park and you'll see what I mean.

Richmond fans on the other hand are mostly die hards who take footy seriously.
You only have to attend one of their games or read their board after a loss to see what I mean.

I'm born and bred Geelong.

I know just as many fans of other teams as I do that support Geelong.

It's not the parochial home team town other cities are in actual supporters numbers.
