Is it time to bring back to Birss? Hayes will obviously be back from injury in 2 weeks, Michael Gardiner probably will be too with Baker/X. Clarke/Schneider roughies to return (although they all might need a week or two at Casey before they return) So is there room for Birss? Do we really want to mess too much with the team that played out our best win of the year? I say yes, Birss never should have been dropped in the first place and brings more to the side than any of our other shut down players in my opinion.

edit: Also Silvagni should be rookie listed next season, surely?

Silvagni in the best again, 7/12!

I was at the game today. I dont go for either side, however from an independant point of view the standard was pretty poor. A lot might have to do with the 5 goal wind going down to one end.

Birss might have been named in the best, but was nothing special. Did not really stand out. Skill level was just as poor as the others.

Fiora was pretty average also. Again did not use the ball to well.

Fisher seemed to get a bit of the ball, but again did not stand out.

If I was an Essendon player I would be more worried though, admittaly the conditions did not suit, but Mal Michael and Johns were terrible.

I was at the game also, disagree with a few points. Birss was good and helped set up some good attacks going forward, also stopped Skipworth in the final term.

Johns was hopeless, Mal Michael played very well though, named best for Bendigo, I believe. Although he was playing on a kid who has played 2 senior VFL games.

Birss and Miles were the best Saints listed players, Jack Steven did alright too. Overall a gutsy effort despite the low skill level. McEvoy was good but outmuscled by the Bendigo ruckmen.

Definitely a 4 or 5 goal wind. In the first half, the ball didn't even go left of centre more than once or twice.

I don't think Raph's heart is in his footy at the moment, and it's understandable. I hope the club sticks by him because I still think he's got the goods to become a great AFL footballer.

Expect Birss to be selected against Carlton, especially if Hayes doesn't come up.

Thanks to Otiman and Footyfan for the comments - sometimes you don't get the full picture from the named best players.

Great to see Miles and Steven play well.

192cm I believe - about the same as Max and Sam F.

Has a reasonable leap.

Maybe not quick enough for a Fevola, but could take a third string forward to release Goddard upfield.

Casey prepared for a top-of-the-table VFL clash by disposing of Bendigo by 29 points at a windy Casey Fields on Sunday
The hard-tackling Scorpions held the Bombers scoreless in the first quarter and by three quarter time they owned a 21-point lead.

Having to kick into the four-goal cross wind to the railway end in the last quarter, coach Greg Hutchison challenged his players with: `This is the first time you've been tested in a while.'

They passed it. Within five minutes of the final term, instructions to win the contested ball had been rewarded with two goals, one to Ben Waite and then hit-up king Chris Dunne.

Frustrating the Bombers, the Scorpions forced them on to the difficult side of the ground, the grandstand flank, where the wind was blowing across.

Bendigo's attempts to get the ball into the corridor resulted in high chips easily chopped off by James Taylor, Evan Panozza, Ben McEvoy and Luke Miles.
In the two quarters Casey had the wind, midfielders Leigh Fisher (two goals and 21 disposals), Jarryn Geary (23), Aaron Fiora and Shane Birss (27) got busy.
Birss, a star at this level, was best-afield by the length of Cranbourne-Berwick Rd. He laid nine tackles and had six inside 50s.

It was enough for him to pick up three votes in the Leader player award, joining Alexander Silvagni and Michael Rix on nine votes.

The persevering Waite was the best deep target for the onballers.

Opposed to Mal Michael, he took nine marks, four of them contested, and had 16 disposals.

Waite has been kicking around the club for a while and this was his best performance at senior level.

The pity is that he will miss the next two games owing to business commitments in China.

Raph Clarke (25 disposals) was another effective forward. He was in attack when the Scorpions had the wing and on a wing/back flank when they were against it.
Dunne pushed up for 10 uncontested marks and had 23 disposals.

The improving Panozza again did well, but hurt an ankle late in the last quarter. The degree of mobility he had on it on Monday suggested it was ligament damage. His and Hutchison's fingers will be crossed.

The Scorpions had lost Michael Rix before the game with concussion, leaving Ben McEvoy to lead the ruck division. Second-gamer Kahn Haretuku was the relieving big man.

Captain Kyle Matthews (foot) missed the match but is expected to be on board when Casey, second, travels to ladder leader Williamstown on Sunday.

The Scorpions will take into the match the confidence of winning their past four matches.

Absolutley huge match next week vs 2nd placed Willy. If we win we'll sit on top of the ladder. Us along with Port Melbourne & North Ballarat are clear in the 4 by 3 games.

What happened to Rixy? Lost before the game due to concussion? Did he get jumped on his way to the ground?

Check the video from the Coburg game - the players were pretty worried about him at the time, and I'm surprised he played out the game. Obviously he was so dazed he thought he was Brendan Fevola and was kicking them from everywhere in the second half!

Thanks for that, always hear that he goes hard. He is so small though, its amazing he can hold is own against the much bigger bodies. Apparently they have tried all sorts of diets and workout regimes but he just has one of those bodies which can't put on much weight.

I was wrong about his injury, seems his ankle wasn't as bad as first thought which is great news indeed. Back in a week or two.

Born in 87 I think, so around 20-21.

thank you, i watched the game on sunday, and he was very, very good, was always trying to be creative and was defensive when needed to be, he would be a handy FB in the AFL, could bulk up a little bit, but thats what pre season is for.

Interesting to selections. Can we therefore assume:
a) Hayes, Gardiner, Xavier, Schneider are not being risked? (it would be an insult to play Lenny in the magoos anyway)
b) Bakes is completely over his injury, and will be given a chance to tear it up and earn his spot?
c) Eddy will be dropped from the seniors?

Anyway go Casey! Not sure how VFL finals works, but I'd assume this match will be pretty important.

Very important, winner gets top spot.

Fair enough not playing Gardiner and Hayes. I would've thought if X and Schneiderman were fit they'd be playing for Casey to win their spot in the team. Doubt they'll be playing against Carlton then.
