Review Cats into ANOTHER PRELIM (14 of 18) after beating Lions by 38 points

I did think at the time the decision to select Clark over Bews was a show of faith for Bowes. If you bring Bews in, he has to be a starter as a lockdown defender and Bowes is a strong candidate for sub. If you bring Clark in, he's the sub and it promotes Bowes to a starting position.

While his stats sheet wasn't anything crazy, I thought Bowes more than justified the selection call there. He really stood up as a wingman who drifted to half forward and made smart decisions all night. He was up for the fight in a contested sense and had some really deft touches of skill that Brisbane couldn't deal with.

Very happy for Jack, who also had a really good game in the QF against Port last year. He's had an up and down 2025, but has timed his run well.
Bowes was fantastic

From Code Sports - Every Geelong and Brisbane player rated from second qualifying final

I won't list every player, just some of the more interesting reads

Geelong:

Blicavs, expert rating 9
- Geelong’s Mr Fix It replaced Stanley in the ruck and was absolutely everywhere. The ultimate utility had four first quarter clearances to Brisbane’s five and pushed forward in the third to kick a cracker. Hard to believe he is 34.

Stewart, expert rating 9
- The Stewart of old is well and truly back. Gave up a goal after a Kai Lohmann flop, but quickly redeemed himself with with two intercept marks in the goalsquare and his first goal of the year - from the paint if you don’t mind.

O'Connor, expert rating 8
- Lived rent free in Rayner’s head, keeping the Lions danger man to one kick in the first half outside of the gifted double goal. That small shove into the back of Rayner that gave up the first goal might have been his only blemish of the night.

Guthrie, expert rating 7
- Had a brain fade shoving Rayner over that saw him kick his second in a row. But he put Charlie Cameron in witness protection, restricting him to two disposals in 73 minutes in their direct match-up.

Mullin, expert rating 8.5
- The man from Mayo completely blanketed McCluggage, keeping him to 14 touches. Remarkably, Mullin had more goals than McCluggage had kicks (one) in the first quarter – which says a lot, considering it was Mullin’s first career-goal in game 40. One of the best seven disposal games you will see.

Atkins, expert rating 7.5
- He’s got more tackle than a fisherman, no surprise Atkins had the most for the Cats. Had some vital touches in close and happily let others enjoy the spotlight.

Dempsey, expert rating 8.5
- Only Ollie Dempsey kicks a worldie like that toe poke off the goalline. Must have left his deodorant in Geelong as no Lions wanted to go near him. Had more touches than any Cat in the first half, as well as two goals, and finished with three. Superb night.

Bowes, expert rating 7
- Has been thrown around like a suitcase this year and a five-minute patch up forward where he slotted a set shot and set up another was important. A key spoil led to Bailey Smith’s goal in the third.

Holmes, expert rating 9
- His running goal in the third was Holmes at his Max. Somehow seemed to get faster as the game wore on. Monster premiership quarter from the road runner.

Dangerfield, expert rating 7
- The skipper started in the midfield but spent most of his time forward. Won some huge contests. You feel like his biggest moments this September are yet to come.

Brisbane:

Fort, expert rating 5.5
- The Cats tried to run him ragged but he battled on as he always does. Certainly didn’t play himself out of the team but you wonder if the Lions will go with two big men next week or look at Oscar McInerney.

C. Cameron, expert rating 1
- After he snuck out the back for the first goal did he sneak on his motorbike and ride out of the ground? Barely seen all night as Zach Guthrie took him down. Did not have a disposal in the second half and finished the game with just two. You have to wonder how he held his spot in the team all year.

Rayner, expert rating 6
- The best Aussie diver since Matthew Mitcham, Rayner went down twice in the most controversial moment of the finals so far. Credit to him, he sold it well. Outside of the double-goal fiasco, had one disposal in the first half as Mark O’Connor wore him like an Oodie. Came into the game after that and was well booed.

Day, expert rating 4
- No influence at all playing in his first final. Had a chance to make a statement in a marking contest against Gryan Miers early and lost. Didn’t look up to it.

McCluggage, expert rating 1.5
- Walked out of the ‘G with his back pocket containing a wallet, phone and OIsin Mullin. The All-Australian had one disposal in the first quarter and seven at half-time and was tagged out of it. A terrible night.

Lohmann, expert rating 6
- Went down like a sack of spuds to lure a free kick and goal against Tom Stewart, and kicked another one. Was creative up forward but would like back a couple of risky handball choices.

To put some of those really low scores for Brisbane into perspective, Jhye Clark who played all of 2% TOG, was rated 0.5 for his solitary disposal

And as for the Day inclusion; Miers is 179cm versus Day at 196cm - you'd expect your KPF to be the dominant player in a marking contest between those two, not be the one to lose out in it

One of the things I really appreciate from last night is how we essentially controlled the game from the start and never really got flustered, even when the pressure came

C. Cameron may have kicked the opening goal 90 seconds into the match, but it wasn't exactly from dominant play by Brisbane and we then didn't allow them to get any early momentum

While it would have been nicer to take better advantage on the scoreboard with our first half dominance, we didn't let the behinds get to us or play too much on our minds, and seemingly reset & refocus to play each passage on its merit

And even when there was the odd time of Brisbane kicking a couple of goals in a row, we didn't wilt under the pressure or allow them to start bullying us - we played a very controlled, well structured final that showed we could work through the gears as needed

It was particularly nice that Jezza shook off that first early miss quickly. I almost had the feels that he was going to be in for a shit night when he missed that first one

Indeed we should have been 5 or 6 goals up at 1/4 time and 10+ goals at half time

I reckon we add another 30% for every mid in terms of possessions. We just moved that footy so efficiently that we just didn't allow anyone to get high-20s.

PS - you were dead right about getting the footy on the outside and killing them there.

I thought the ratings in the age were way more balanced. You had to effectively smash it to get over 6.5

I’m a long-suffering North supporter, but I watch every Geelong game on tv with my lovely, usually placid 88 year old Cats fan father.

Last night I witnessed a whole new side of him. Clapping. Yelling. Air Punching! I believe a word I’ve never heard him ever use before was yelled at the umpires. He was more vocal and animated than I’ve ever seen him and it was brilliant.

I love how fired up the Cats fans were. Good luck. I think you can do it and we’ll be watching.
Your dad sounds like a champion!

It is stated on another site that Rayner stood on O'Connor's toe before the incident. If so he is a dog.

The game is useless if they are going to pay frees of that nature that far away from the ball. The AFL must make a statement. The free was universally criticised.
From the beginning of the game Rayner was punching MOC, slapping his stomach, pinching him, elbowing him, nudging him. All MOC did was bump or push him.

There were other umpires’ errors, already discussed.

Even Razor Ray said it was wrong + not a free kick.

As for #33 Brett Wallace, no more finals this year + back to umpiring school.

Hi guys. Do we know when the cats will play next? Will it be a Friday night or Saturday?
Widely believed to be Friday night after the AFL released the schedule for next weeks semi finals
