Heard it from someone who works at CD, that "pressure acts" is a ****ing horrible stat and they wish they never invented it, but clubs love it for some reason.

They rate metres gained as the best statistic in terms of judging outside midfielders and half backs. Let's say Hibberd gets the ball at our defensive 50 metre arc, runs 30 metres and delivers a 50 metre bullet pass to Daniher, Hibberd gets 80m gained. If he gets it, runs 30, turns it over around the halfway point, they run back and kick a goal he actually gets -50m gained.

what happens if he kicks 50m to a contest and it turns into a stoppage? does he get the 50m?

to me it just seems like a stat that rewards players that have no sideways vision and just throw it on the toe.
Adam Saad being a prime example, the guy butchers the ball almost as much as dempsey running out of defence but at the start of the year was dominating the meters gained stat

No. The kick must be to the benefit of the side.

It confuses me when they use the metres gained stat to down play the impact of inside mids whose primary role is to feed the outside players.

Have much more time for metres gained than pressure acts because it is at least an objective way of measuring the impact of a specific type of player.

A pressure act is a subjective interpretation of an action taken by a player without any regard for the the effectiveness of the attempt to apply pressure (and creates a particularly distorted perception of the value of certain players).

The metres gained stat was made because outside mids didn't have an effective stat for them. Pressure acts are ranked on a scale of 1-4, with different acts getting more or less points (the only thing I know is that a tackle that stops the play is 4 points and a tackle that doesn't stop the play but isn't broken is worth 3, and a broken tackle 1)

Suppose it is all relative in the bigger picture and not in isolation. The clubs love it because they can see who the blokes are who work hard but it is only 1 KPI in a string needed. Like any stat by itself it can be very misleading .

Remember a game earlier this year where up to half time Dangerfield had 20ish possessions and 300m gained and Rockliff had 20ish and 30m gained.
Guys like Mark Allen and Schwarz on SEN mock the stat but they don't actually understand it, they think if you kick it 40m and turn it over it still counts as 40. As per eth's excellent explanation they have no idea.

Think it's way more useful as an indicator when used in conjunction with kicking efficiency % or ball retention or however they label it.

In the lions game against us Daniel Rich had about 500 metres gained in the first half, but had a ball retention rate of 0%, so they were just blind hacks. How do you weigh that against Tippa having 300ish metres gained for a game, but at 80 or even 90% efficiency?
