We went for broke today to win this game with the Porplyzia selection and leaving Thommo, Rutten in. Heck, I think even Hendo was selected a little prematurely last week with a view towards getting him up to speed as quickly as possible for tonight. I still feel it was the right move, given the importance of winning the game, even if it clearly didn't come off. We win, we're in the box seat for a finals position, which would be important experience for all the young players in our side (of which there are many) even though we'd be unlikely to get too far. It would have been hugely beneficial to expose guys like Brown, Laird, Jenkins, Crouch etc to finals footy, and so I was happy with us prioritising wins.

In the end, however, we lost, and, depending on results this weekend, could end up 2 games out of the eight. The gamble didn't pay off, which means there is no reason why we should not shift the focus further towards development and list management, and we certainly shouldn't be playing guys who are touch-and-go fitness-wise.

I'd like to see Luke Thompson given the rest of the year to see whether he has it (or at least to potentially get some trade value out of him). Maybe Hartigan too (though his SANFL form hasn't been so great).

Crouch Jr and Lyons should play out the year, with Grigg getting some chances too. Atkins to debut, and perhaps CEY to get a few games on the trot.

So for Collingwood, I'd like to see Thommo (clearly needs an extended rest), Porplyzia (done but deserves to play our last home game as a retirement match), Otten (strategic) and Rutten (same deal as Porps) out of the side. LT, Crouch Jr, Grigg and Lyons in. Otten might be a bit controversial, as he's still young enough to be around for our next real finals run, and I do think he was great against Port, but I'd really like to see how Luke T goes. If he performs (and wants to stay) it means we have a surplus of guys who can play that position, all with decent credentials, and opens up some more trade possibilities for us. We need to see what Lyons has got, as well as Grigg, and Crouch Jr is, obviously, the perfect Thompson replacement. We lose no pace with these changes, though Hendo and Smith will both need to remain in the backlines for height reasons.

If Reilly comes in next week I will lose my ****ing mind

And once again we "gamble" on experience vs development because we are sitting in the irrelevant black hole of "fighting for 8th" as we seem to do most of the time.

We need to see the big picture.

Sando this year has dropped players based on form. Dougie isnt in form or is injuried. Needs a spell either out or in the 2nds. Need to start rewarding the youngsters.

There won't be wholesale changes I don't think.

Mackay back in for Porps

Really need the rest Thommo and bring in Crouch
Rutten a spell and Hartigan or LT in.

In: Mackay, Lyons, Crouch

Out: Thompson, Porplyzia & Jaensch

Reasoning
Thommo needs a rest
Porplyzia is done and should just retire
Jaensch omitted to re jig the side.

Mackay comes in for some run off the half back
Lyons and Crouch come in to side to replace Thommo and add some midfield depth.

I would keep Rutten in to pair up with Cloke. Cloke is Ruttens ideal matchup.

Finals experience is an important part of development, and for most of the year we've fielded pretty inexperienced sides anyway. Crouch Jnr had a good stretch of games, as did Hartigan, Cameron got a taste and would have played more if not for injury. We even, finally, gave Martin a decent trot to see whether he deserves a spot on the list. I think he does, though only as a depth player (hasn't shown enough to be considered a best 22, though I do think he's performed about as well as Mackay, who is considered an automatic selection). Jaensch, too, has improved immensely, having been considered basically a prime delisting candidate a few months back. Brown, Laird, Smith, Kerridge etc all have played most of the season. Brad Crouch would have. A few guys, like Lyons and Grigg could have been given better chances, but, overall, I don't think it's fair to suggest that this year has been a write-off development-wise - it hasn't - we've seen huge improvement from a lot of our young players and have a far better idea of who will make it and who won't. Part of this has been due to injury, but part has been a focus on developing players. Bringing in Cameron when we did, for instance, was hardly the move of an completely conservative club. Now is the time that we should be pivoting further towards development.

Agree.

Outs come from Rutten, Porplyzia, Otten, Laird, Douglas (clearly not right, was our best performed mid before the knacker injury) and an injured Thompson.

So that's:

Hartigan…Rutten
LT…Otten
MC…Porplyzia
Mackay
…Laird
Grigg…Douglas
Lyons…Thompson

Charlie back in the SANFL, and promoted asap. Ditto Kerridge.

No way should we regard Laird as best 22…slow, can be exposed overhead, poor disposal, lacks any penetration. Heart of a lion but it's not enough.

Not all of these changes will occur of course but some must.
