Changes for Hawthorn

How bout VB to go out for Bock his form wasnt great against Carlton just looks a lil injured to me maybe just a week or 2 to rest prolly wouldnt even play him in the SANFL i think he just needs to recover wat ever it is thats bothering him

ONLY BASED ON FORM:

Moran offers more team flexibility than Maric currently and I will be amazed if Walker gets dropped becuase he was asked to play higher up the ground on Saturday ......and I thought he was ok

Plus Maric didn't do enough in ruck or around the ground to take over from Moran

That said:

In: Bock
Out: Maric

Whilst I agree that Maric or Moran will miss for Bock if he's ok, I think that you are hard on these guys. The reason why their two stats combine for one ruckman's output is that when one is on the ground the other is on the bench. It's hard to get stats on the pine :D

5 touches for a half a game, not a good output in my books

I would be absolutely shocked if we dropped a small for Bock

IMO there is absolutely no chance of Symes being dropped for Bock

It will either be Maric or Moran

Whilst I'd like to see Craigy drop a small for Bock, I seriously doubt it would happen, so at this stage I'd be thinking it'd be out of either Maric or Moran and if TOG is a half decent indicator, which it often is, then I'd suggest Moran will be the one to miss out, although I'm not entirely certain this is the right choice. Another interesting stat to come out of saturdays game was that Moran had a Hit-out to advantage ratio of 50% vs Maric's which was closer to 15%, for a similar number of hitouts. Unfortunately it's tough to drop anyone following a match like the Carlton one, but you'd want Bock to come in every day of the week, so I'll go:

In: Bock
Out: Moran, although I think it'd be a close call between himself and Maric.

Considering that

a) Moran was better than Maric on the weekend
b) Moran offers more flexibility and he can play back, forward and in the ruck
c) We are playing Hawthorn and with Franklin / Roughead duo Craig would want more flexibility with his talls (ie Moran can go back if needed)

All of this points to Maric getting dropped if Bock is ready to resume.

Why do people want to suggest Walker to be dropped? Hes only leading the clubs shots on goal, with around 60% game time...

The 3 rucks experiment worked well. Like Moran to get more time forward than Ivan though. Ivan isnt a great mark where I think Moran is much better. Moran should stay in, I think he took steps in the right direction, clearly shown by the seemingly 50/50 opinion of him in this thread as opposed to the 10/90 from recent weeks.

Symes will probably be the unlucky one

I agree with you. I cant believe how many people on here are suggesting Walker be dropped. He is our second highest goal kicker this year and as you said leading the clubs shots on goal while sitting on the bench the majority of the games. Sure his defensive game needs to improve but sending him back to the SANFL will do NOTHING for him.

To be honest i am really happy with the way Walker is progessing and the more game experience we can give him the better. If super coach showed more faith in him and played him the majority of the game im sure he would kick more goals as well. Taking him on and off the ground does nothing for his confidence and doesnt allow him to gain any momentum. He has played one full game and look at the result - 4.3. If we are to develop a good forward structure for the future then Walker needs to be in the there (on the ground for a change) every game of the year.

Other key forward in the competitions generally took 3 years if not longer to make an impact
Fevola took until his fourth year to kick more than 27 goals in a year
Franklin took until his third year to kick more than 31 goals in a year
Bradshaw took until his third year to kick more than 35 goals in a year
Pavlich took until his fourth year to kick more than 28 goals in a year
Riewoldt took until his third year to kick more than 30 goals in a year

Oh FFS and what happened after the Bulldogs game?! He didn't train for a week and only did some light training in the main training session because of soreness

How about people stop and think why Walker is being rotated on and off the bench as often as he is. Its called player management. So do we need him to blow a calf or a hammy by playing extensive minutes or is it better than he plays 50-60% of the game for 22 weeks and potentially finals?!

Oh and BTW, Pavlich spend most of his early years as a CHB and Riewoldt missed a lot of his first year because of a knee injury and played majority of the second year on the wing winning St. Kilda's B&F.

It might be called player management but why is it on the board so many people think Walker should be dropped. We finally have a young forward with massive potential and everyone wants him dropped after 9 games. What a joke. Show some faith in the youngsters for god sake. Very hard to kick goals on the pine. Playing him on the wing for all of 5 minutes then returning to the bench straight away that was really good as well wasnt it. As I said before im really happy with the way he is going and i just hope supercoach doesnt kill his confidence.

The only reason Walker will or should be dropped is if the selection committee thinks its in his best interests. At the rate he's going so far he should 36-37 goals this year, not including finals. That's an awesome output for a tall forward who was 18 at the start of the season. Not to mention our obvious lack of real talent in the position and the flexibility & potency in front of goals he offers. Also he has really taken his work rate off the ball up a notch. If the club drops him, I'd definitely support it because I'd back their understanding of where he is at, but it most likely won't happen.

Moran edges out Maric for Bock's return. Tough on Ivan, but it is not like he set the world on fire & hopefully it will make him hungrier to get back to his best.

No other tall should be considered - Stevens gives us flexibility/back-up options & was working himself back into form; not time to drop Walker.

B: Johncock, Rutten, Otten
HB: Doughty, Bock, Goodwin
C: Reilly, Vince, Mackay
HF: Porplyzia, Stevens, Edwards
F: Knights, Tippett, Dangerfield
R: Moran, Thompson, Douglas
I: Walker, McLeod, van Berlo, Symes

bock in
if a mid is to go it should be vb
if a tall it should be maric
both are fairly ineffective

My understanding is that Bock wants to play this week but the club may make him miss one extra as a precution against a recurrence of it.

Presuming that Bock does play, it'd surely have to be tall for tall, with one of Moran or Maric being the one to miss.

I think so too, I think it will be Moran.

Would be silly to drop Walker IMO he is leaning more and more each game. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Walker was BOG against the bullies, geez some people are harsh.

OK Moran may have been slightly (very slightly) better than Maric on the w/e, as fr the flexibility point that is unproven yet he played down forward twice last year and had one good game (most of his goals in that game IIRC were from directly in front) and then there is the shot he had earlier this season.

WOuld you really want Moran to play on Buddy or Roughead? I personally think he'd get killed, now I could be wrong as I don't see much SANFL, do they play him down back for South?

Also with the flexability we already have stevo who can play that role if required and otten to take a 3rd tall...

Other than Griff I can't recall the last time NC dropped someone after one week...

This is an excellent, well thought out post.

If we consider that there is 22 regular games in a season, plus 4 pre season games and potentially 4 finals, that equals 30 games. Add on to this, a big pre season and the regular rigorous training sessions during any given week, you can see that there is a huge stress on a players body which has to be managed week in week out. More seasoned footballers cope a lot better than the kids, hence the limited TOG Walker is receiving.

Mackay and Tippett both suffered last year and were dropped back to the SANFL to regain some form. Both returned to the AFC shortly after producing a string of good performances. I'd suggest if Walker were dropped the same scenario would happen.

To give him more game time to show 'what he can do', is not in his best interests at the moment and I'd suggest the club has got this one right.
