ADELAIDE onballer Brent Reilly has implored his teammates to “fight like hell” to win the ball against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday and restore some of the respect lost after last week’s sub-par Showdown performance.

Reilly, 25, was part of the Crows’ on-ball brigade that lost the clearances (42-22) and hit-outs (44-17) in the 26-point loss to Port Adelaide.

Reilly said he was confident Adelaide could reverse the trend against the talented Bulldogs’ midfield at home on Sunday.

“I know we can do it. We’ve done it all year and we had one little slip up against Port, which was very disappointing. We can go out there against the Bulldogs and really show everyone else how good we are,” Reilly said on Wednesday.

“We need to be more competitive in the ruck. Our ruck division were beaten quite convincingly against Port, but it’s up to the midfielders around the ball too.

“We can’t rely on our ruckmen to win every tap. We need to go out there, read the hand and fight like hell to make a contest.”

Coach Neil Craig has so far resisted using proven veterans Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod in long stints in the midfield this season.

Reilly said the club would persist with blooding its next generation, which includes the likes of Bernie Vince, David Mackay, Patrick Dangerfield and Richard Douglas.

“We’ve got some good, young midfielders coming through. At times you’ve got to put your Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin in there (the midfield) just to show the way, but you don’t want to fall back on them all the time,” Reilly said.

Reilly, who had his arm broken against the Dogs in round one last year, will be hoping for a more memorable outing in his 100th game this week.

The Victorian was selected by the Crows with pick No.12 in the 2001 NAB AFL Draft, but spent the best part of his first two years in Adelaide out injured, or playing with SANFL club Sturt.

Reilly became a regular in the Crows’ side in 2005 and 2006, but has struggled with injury over the past two seasons.

Last year he was left out of the team to take on Collingwood in the elimination final.

Reilly, who contemplated a return home to Victoria in the early days, said it would be a big thrill to finally play his 100th AFL game.

“It’s been a long journey, but I’m really proud of myself that I’ve got to 100 games,” he said.

“I’ve still got a lot to prove to Craigy and the coaches, but I’m heading in the right direction.”

Need to make a statement this game.

What I would like to see.

Out - Doughty, Griffin, Stevo

In - Knights/Jacky, Maric, McKernan

One of our major problems has been a good marking tall around the ground and I believe Smack can fill this void. Has the body size, Strength and Performance in the SANFL to warant a debut. Dogga and Stevo are not part of our future and must make way for our youngsters.

I'd love to see some Smack action, but would like to see Griffin be persisted with.

Swap Griff with Cook (sorry Cookie monster) because I think we need to be taller.

I'd like to see sensible posts about team selection.

Sadly, this is a forum full of ill informed reactionaries.

Griffin will be given more than just one bad game, Doughty has been a good and consistent performer, and Stevens is clearly a required player as our only genuine utility, despite having a bad game on his return.

Knights will come back in, Symes may come back in, Maric needs more time in the SANFL to regain the coaches trust, and all I've heard about McKernan this season is "Good without being great" and "Ok, considering his team didn't play that well" - I hardly see how that constitutes enough SANFL performance to earn a debut, and his strength and body size are being just a little bit over sold.

Cook was found out as being too small and slight of frame for the AFL at this stage on the weekend, Walker has had his 6 games in the side and slid badly in form rather than settling into his position, Mackay hasn't exactly been great, and Douglas has been very ordinary.

Read the post.
I said thats what I would like to see but I know it wont happen. We must get games into our youngsters (only ones playing consistent SANFL seniors) and make the call to cut older players like they did with Shirley. And McKernan would already be stronger and bigger then Stevo.

I'm fairly certain what I would like to see won't ever happen either.

Shirley wasn't cut because he was old, Shirley was cut because he had only one string to his bow and the tagger has no place in the zone game plan. If they were cutting players because they are old, Doughty would not have played a game this season either.

I'm sure Marius Pudzianowski is stronger and bigger than Stevens too, should we give him a start? There's more to it than raw size and strength, Tom Hawkins being an excellent example.

i doubt that. As big as Smack ((c) – CC) he is still only 19 years old and strength isn’t everything in a footballer.

No shit crows98, everyone rages on about McKernan's big thighs and stuff but it is a completely different game in the AFL. Stevo has the ability to stand tall and take a strong mark, can McKernan do that in the AFL? Stevens probably has much stronger core strength as well which is pretty crucial.

Plus, he is a very good and very important player. We can't just start axing players like him and have 16 kids in the team. We will get belted and the kids aren't really going to learn from that, you can learn from a loss of course but we still need to win games. The young lads will take a lot out of wins, such as the one in Round 1.

Plus wouldn't that be almost tanking? :p

Nobody likes a tanker (luckily no typo in sight).

Pffft everyone thinks there so pro on this board lol.

Hopefully Cook isnt taken out of the side, hes been good for us. Theres been worse players then him, but just because there more mature they arn't even looked at eg. Doughty.

Probably what we will see:

Out: Griffin, Cook
In: Maric, Knights

Edit - If Stevens is out due to him not being 100%, I would love to see Griffin stay in, I want to see how the Maric/Tippett/Griffin combo go this year.

....
Well I think Walker should stay in the side since he obviously has shown what he can do. Mackay has yes, not been in 'excellent' form but what can you expect from a young kid? Gary Ablett? I think Mackays been pretty good in our side, and also against Geelong his work ethic was great :thumbsu:
Douglas may not be in the best form, and dropping him to the SANFL may get his confidence up a bit, but as I said before, his position change into the midfield was a stupid idea.

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Then you come up with this zinger. Yeah you’re real pro.
why do you have this attitude towards Loz. She has a bad rep as a pain in the arse I know but I dont know why.

But I have let her on my account as a test. She posted posts under my account for a few hours a few weeks ago, and people didnt look down on her when they thought she was me

She has more knowledge of the Crows then about 99.8% (everyone but cmndstab and -CG-) of people on this board. But because of her stupidity way back before I joint you all ignore her opinion and just think of it as bull crap before you even read it.

Vader, can you unblock the PIHL appreceation thread on the Backyard sub board. I want to say more there.

I think i'm pro? No, I just think i'm an ordianry 15 year old crows fan who has a passion about footy. Nothing else. I dont change my thoughts of players just in a tick.
Eg. Mackay.
He's been doing so well at training, star in the making etc.
He's been in shit form, drop him to the SANFL.

Whats wrong about these posts?
He hasnt been in shit form.. (alot of people of this thread have already established this in maybe a different sort of lead up).

Most of these posters are probably 30+ ? Now you gotta say, thats pretty sad to think most of these people think they know more then Craigy does.

Why thankyou Riggy, and may I say that you can be a pain in the arse also ;)

I'm 15, what can you expect? I'm probably stupid 50% of the time, but I know what i'm talking about and I defiently dont go around thinking I am more knowlegable then Craigy and the Crows staff.

And like Riggy said, when I posted as him, everyone seemed to agree with me rather then disagree?
Pfft what an utter piece of crap.

How about we get back on topic??

Out: Everyone
In: Symes

He can beat the Bulldogs on his own...because he's THAT good.

He's better than everyone else, he's the best player in the AFL (he kicks Gablett's arse).

Symes > Everyone else.

I only want to win the game. I dont want to destroy them. IF we destroy them then complacency may grow in the team

Now Riggy you just lost any credibility you had by making the above statement.

At least PIHL herself readily admitted that she is "just an ordinary 15 year old crows fan who has a passion about footy. Nothing else."
