2 kicks, 2 marks, 1 tackle... kicked 1.1.

Brilliant possession to scoring opportunity ratio!

Must...find...positives...

Until he can provide a viable option equal to or better than Andrews has been then he will play 2's with Martin our main ruck IMO. Andrews looks like a natural forward who can ruck a bit, which we need moreso than a decent ruckman who can pinch hit forward like Leuey.
I completely agree with the latter part of that, with our key need being that forward who can ruck, rather than a ruck who can go down forward like Luey, but I'm not sure if having Naitunui and Maric jumping over you for two weeks is going to do an 18 year old a whole lot of good. But if you think that Andrews can provide an 'equal' option to Luey, then by all means Andrews should be stuck with. Unfortunate not to see Dawson out there for the reserves after quite an impressive game the week prior. Amidst all the gloom, I really believe that the last couple of drafts have been very good. Obviously it'll take a couple of years to really see, but the early signs are good... Aish leaving is another issue altogether, how handy would a McCarthy be about now ha

It's a real shame. Lynch really struggled last week against Davis, but he'll feel a bit more confident against Clarke, particularly with no Patfull there to help out.

Unfortunately I think we're going to get blown away again. The Suns aren't lacking in attacking firepower.

You could put Rance, Gibson and Taylor down there and they would still struggle given the amount of turnovers we're producing combined with the areas of the ground that they're happening.

I think it's the Suns smalls that are more likely to hurt us. Bennell, Martin, Garlett, etc.

Not here to shit-stir, just felt like contributing a bit.

I was at the game and honestly thought your backline did a pretty good job for the most part. The poor efforts in the midfield had the ball going to the right places all the time for West Coast.

My biggest concern though, was Cutler. He looked an absolute mile off on the weekend. The four of us sat there and groaned whenever he got the ball. Couldn't do a thing right.

I know all about poor kicking. Kane Mitchell is one of my favourite players. Trust me, I can overlook poor disposal if the effort is there, but Cutler's certainly wasn't. The ball landed in his hands by accident and he gave it straight back the opposition. It's very hard to get any kind of drive out of defence if your leading disposal getter in the back half is hitting opposition players on the chest inside 50.

Plenty of players struggled to have an influence for the Lions. Cutler had an influence, sure, but you could probably attribute Eagles scores proportional to the final margin, to his efforts. Was your worst on the ground by a long way for mine.

I really do hope you beat the Suns next week and I reckon you will. The endeavour, for the most part, was there against the Eagles, but you just weren't good enough.

I think I'll cry if Martin has a big game against us.

I have never seen him do anything to justify the raps on him. He is lightning quick off the mark, and that's about it.

Watched him live for the first time on Saturday evening, and he looked like he didn't belong out there.

Agree otherwise, though. Matera, Bennell and this new bloke Touk Miller can do a lot of damage if they get a sniff.

You and I clearly watched different games!!

Sure Cutler had shocking disposal in the 1st half (20 efficiency or something horrible like that) but he was hardly alone. In the 2nd half (where he had even more disposals than the 1st half) he went at over 80% efficiency. He also straightened us up big time coming in to the corridor and didn't just bomb down the line all the time. The coaches want the Lions to take risks, and he was the only one consistently brave enough to do that along with N Robertson. Sure some of his turnovers ended in opposition goals, but that's what happens with a 2nd year player in a poor team with little to kick to in terms of targets.

Martin will be an absolute gun. Fades in and out of games and still skinny but throws his body around and doesn't hold back. The game against the Cats was very good and was IMO the reason the Suns almost beat them. Suns have a few dangerous players that have to be held accountable. Bennell has a good game and we lose simple as that.

Prediction: West returns to NEAFL this week. Plays full forward.
named in senior side in Round 8 as full forward

Glad to see west return. I remember him doing alright as a resting ruck up forward. Kicked 3 vs the hawks.

West is big and can mark. Hes in when fitness back up. Got a few years in him too. Needs to work exclusively on playing forward. Lots of time spent w Browny.

Id like to see Andrews and Aish out this week, Staker and Leuey in. Id play Leuey as the sub remind him he can make an impact. Id sub him prolly for MRobbo. Staker plays until West, Close, Freeman or McGuane are fit n ready then we will see.

anyone heard our Gooose is going after head knock in reserves game?

If Goose is okay, I might play him at FF instead of Staker.

How come this year we are leaving a mid so far forward resting routinely? Id rather that being a big bloke?

I'm now where near experienced enough in AFL watching to know the full ramifications of this suggestion but it would be fun to see:

1. When Rog comes back to defensive anchor (he said several times that it takes him a couple of weeks to get used to a move if he moves from back to fwd)
2. Justin Clarke goes up forward and skittles a few packs. He's got a few strong contested marks and has no shortage of tank or courage or boot.

Stef Martin can stay in No 1 ruck

How would forward talls of Clarke, Luenbergererereerer (re Pink Panther) & McStay go.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lz0IT4Uk2xQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

McStay has 2nd or third defender and can come in for his "drifting in from the side" or speccy mark Luey can be the pinch hit ruck and we have more than enough mozzies/rotating mids/floaters.

Clarke also adds defensive pressure up forward

Defensive 50 is the obvious question mark but would be fun/interesting to see and take some pressure off McStay

The idea of playing Clarke forward isn't a dumb suggestion but there is also no way we can afford to do it in the foreseeable future. He does have the goods and the courage but he is the best we have at the back and until we are miraculously blessed with a surplus of key defenders of his quality, at the back he must stay.

Would love to send him forward for a quarter some day, just to see what he can do.

I thought McStay was a little better this week as a forward, although that's not saying much.

However, in his short stint down back there was a mark he took so comfortably, reading the flight so naturally, which suggested to me that in the long term he's going to be a significantly better defender.
I think his reading of the flight of the ball is probably the best out of the youngsters. He has a few marks where no one else went near it and he judged it just fine. I think he will be an asset where ever he ends up forward or back. But at the moment unless we sign up tom hawkins rance and or carlilse we need him up forward.

Cutler McGuane Beams

Robertson Beams Martin

Christensen Staker Zorko
Taylor McStay Redden

Leuenberger Rockliff Rich

Adcock Paparone Bewick

Sub: Green

Out: Robinson, Andrews, Aish
In: McGuane, Leuenberger, Staker

Robinson needs to do more than just tackling, Andrews can go back to NEAFL from a positive stint, Aish disappeared. McGuane is that key defender that allows Paparone to play wing/ loose in defence, Leuenberger as first ruckman to let Martin roam as a midfielder, Staker kicked a few in the NEAFL and we need that.

OUT: Aish, Andrews & Robinson
IN: Maguire, Staker & Hammelmann (off rookie list for McGrath)

Reasoning:

Aish has mentally departed. No point in playing him, especially with his output so below 2014 levels. Pressure has got to him.
Andrews has shown he can cut it at senior level with minimal F50 entries. Time to go back and get some big NEAFL games.
Robinson will be a solid asset when the team is up and about. This is not now. Tackling is good, but needs more of it to impact games.

Maguire to come in after a poor AFL and average NEAFL game where he was knocked out. Just need his big body and talk down back.
Staker had 14 scoring shots on the weekend (5.9). Much the same as Maguire, just need a tall that wont get pushed off the ball.
Hammer may well get pushed off the ball, but has kicked two bags of five in the first three rounds and probably the best game to give him a go in the AFL with Gold Coast the only team putting out a younger team than us last round.

Don't mind the idea of giving Goose a run forward. He's slow but will give us a target and he's looked very poor down back. At worst he's no better than the current options.

More realistically Leppa will want to get games into blokes who'll be there for longer if we're going to be down anyways. Leuey in at FF and Staker in to help in defence makes sense. Don't like the idea of taking Martin out of the first ruck role as he's one of the few performing well. Play him forward in bursts, sure, but he's taken that role and hasn't done anything to lose it imo.

Changes all depend on fitness. Not much to choose from. Really hope Rocky is better for the run on the weekend.
