It’s a mystery because those 7 coaches didn’t rate him durning the season through those years at the bnf.
The point is.. the crows are not winners .. and Mackay has been contributing to that for longer than nearly all players - the least likely to change that going forward also!

Not to trash former players but I cringed when I saw Nicks on 360 this week with games record holder images in the background. McLeod 340 games, Edwards 300 something, then somewhere underneath Edwards you have Michael Doughty 200 something. When he retired I believe he'd played the 9th most games for the club (Mackay is currently 13th I think). Maybe that's inspiring for younger players - work hard, get the most out of your limited ability and you too can eventually be a life member - or maybe in the words of Rob Chapman it shows how much the club rewards mediocrity.

So I took a look at our games record holder list as of end of 2020. 7 of our 8 250+ games players were premiership players. 6 of them dual premiership players.

Of the next 22 players from 150 to 250 games, only one was a premiership player (Rod Jameson). There's some good names among them but that's a lot of players that have played a lot of games without winning anything.

The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. Hundreds of games with minimal success, no recognition internally or externally. Not only is that accepted but they're deified? Others are shuffled into different roles to accommodate them? Multiple coaches sacked but the next guy always follows suit? It's a weird quirk in our culture

Hahaha you really can't win with Crows supporters!

Despite the fact we had a review a few years ago and what came out of it was a distinct lack of connection with former players etc etc, amongst many other things.

Jeez if you go through a list of premiership winners of the last decade it will be littered with players who aren't 200+ gamers.

"But 7 coaches kept picking him! Sure, 5 of those coaches were sacked within a couple of seasons or simply not offered the main job, but ignore that..."

Also, Drugs Are Bad Mackay? , this is a R16 v Brisbane thread, i would have expected you as a moderator to be able to keep things on point.

It's quite clear we rushed Brown back without him having to earn it or being fit. Classic AFC.

We SHOULD drop him and let him get fitness back, but we won't.

Yeah i mean it's blatantly obvious his achilles is not up for match intensity at the moment. It was so arrogant for our selection committee to assume he could come straight back into the seniors, despite the fact the fact that he's already had a few setbacks this season in doing so, instead of bringing him back through the SANFL for at least one game to make sure his body was up to it (which it isn't)

Mackay is currently 10th on the list, having overtaken Doughty earlier this season. He's currently 6 games behind Richard Douglas (9th).

As for the rest... it's 23 years since our last premiership, and there have been 2 whole generations of players who have passed through the doors of the AFC in that time. It's no surprise at all that we have a number of 200+ game players who have never tasted premiership success.

Assume this game could be played without crowds or will it need to be moved?

There have been reports that the Qld teams have already flown to Victoria. I haven't seen that confirmed though
I guess Geelong or Ballarat could be used as a venue on Saturday if the match were to be played in Victoria instead

We shouldn't be tagging this year, unless we are training up a younger player in that role.

Having said that, we should be trying different options including through the midfield.

If Sloane plays injured in a rebuild, then the selectors are idiots!

Perfect time to empower the younger guys witu more midfield minutes

It certainly is, but you know that is the least likely outcome. There are certain things that transcend coaching changes. Our club has core football philosophies, we don't have a Football Strategy Committee as a resume builder for the directors/admin types that pollute it. It's there to drive pre-existing philosophies, to hold staff accountable against those philosophies, to interact with the List Management Committee to ensure the list can achieve against those philosophies.

Until start from scratch from the top, Balme would have been so awesome, you'll continue to see the same choices made week in and week out. Selecting our most experienced team available and injured seniors are the two dead set giveaways that nothing has changed. And why would it, do you really think that if Nicks stood in front of Roo, Fagan and Chapman with a plan to blow the whole system apart he'd have gotten the job?

Yes, the Lions and Suns flew into Melbourne last night.

If the rumours are true and SA is going into lockdown, I'd expect the Crows to fly to VIC in coming hours and the game to be played here.

Kardinia Park is free on Saturday (games there on Friday and Sunday) and there's also Ballarat as an option.

Good news for our draft pick. We would lose to an Auskick side at those grounds.
