Every 2nd week I reckon unless he plays significant minutes as he would lose match fitness... but agree he should be used as our main sub
Do you need match fitness as a sub? worst case scenario he play 3.5 quarters, plus he is an “elite trainer” so he can keep his fitness up off the field.

Keep the kids away from the sub! He is now David-sub-Mackay!

Mackay should be the specialist sub. Every week until further notice.

Crikey that was hard to say.

Now that’s out of the way, does it make any sense? Responses from astute posters only please. By astute I mean if you like ABAB & dislike Sanders, don’t even bother.
If we did that you could almost guarantee we would get an injury in the first quarter every game! :straining:

Just watched the highlights on YouTube

Newchurch is a bigger unit than I thought. I’d give him a go replacing either McAdam or Rowe.

I like Newchurch and whilst he has improved on last years "only if the ball is within 3 metres of me" crap, he has only upped it to a one effort chase with a bullshit tackling attempt. When he upps it to repeat efforts and is taught by Berry how to tackle...we got ourselves a player. In the meantime though, not interested in his Tomic efforts at AFL level, though I can see why you'd want him to replace Rowe

After the South Adelaide match I posted that I wouldn’t mind giving Newchurch an early taste in the Ones. Purely gut feel, he strikes me as a player that might look better with better players around him. He is also good fun to watch 😁.

Young Jimmy could do with a rest/run in the Twos, same story with McAdam. Will it improve our chance of a win on Saturday? Probably not but is that a key factor?

Rowe has played well at Adelaide Oval and badly away from it. Maybe he's still learning to adjust to travelling to away games where it's a huge shift for him, rather than just driving an extra 20-30 minutes to get to whatever suburban oval you need to go to?

Hogan will be playing for GWS and if we don’t address the lack of height on our backline I’ll be furious. We are getting exposed week after week in this department.
Whitfield is also back so we will need McHenry to maybe play a lockdown role on him

I saw an article on Adelaidenow that we are considering bringing in a debutant this week, I couldn't see who they said but can only assume Worrell.
Both Kelly and Smith have mentioned Worrell in interviews this week. They also mentioned that Hamill will miss the showdown last night on 7 news.

It's good news as Hamilll's injury is not as bad as it could have been.

& the club have finally appear to have recognised Lynch can't keep playing with a buggared toe.

'Unlikely' is not yet cause to rejoice. Let's just wait to see (omit) or (inj) next to his name. And that his replacement isn't Mackay into the 22.

Re MacKay While I like him as the Injury sub, I also believe he has value in assisting the development of the Kids in the SANFL.
I am not sure what you mean by development
He doesn’t seem a vocal - instructing player
I’m not being over critical here but just doesn’t seem to have the leadership qualities

Liked for your viewpoint. I dont agree on newchurch as he still looks way off the required intensity for AFL but right now it is about exposing players at AFL level and newchurch aside, totally agree with not being fussed about a win being the be all and end all right now

Many people assume that experience and leadership are exactly the same thing. If you're experienced you simply must be a leader. Makes me wonder if AdV was ever actually in the military as he claims.

I don't think anyone thinks Newchurch is ready, but given the form of Rowe & McAdam, it wouldn't harm giving him a taste & them a kick up the arse in the sanfl.

Whitfield to come straight in after missing the 6 rounds and the last 6 weeks of preseason? Well, you've got to give it to GWS, they have seemingly always prioritized getting their top talent on the park over all else.

Something tells me Lachie will be puffing very hard on Saturday though.

I can certainly see the value of giving Newchurch a block of games. I probably wouldn't have chosen GWS-Port-WCE-Melb-Rich as the perfect slate of games for that block.

But hey, baptism's by fire have been known to work from time to time as well!

27 degrees, yeah he's gonna be struggling.

I am extremely cynical about the recent explosion in ‘leadership’ (and not just in footy). I vomit whenever I see ‘leadership’ in some 1& year old kid’s draft profile.
Mackay doesn’t have to be vocal, or issue instructions, to have value in young players’ development. A good example - demonstrating the work required - is worth just as much as words, and more than words not backed up by action. People learn by seeing how it is done.
Now, it would help if he had a bit more to show, but hard work and commitment are essential and he shows them every week.
