So the Fog midfield experiment appears to be over?

Do we hang onto him until Tex retires or look to trade?
We probably trade him then wonder in 2 years why we only have 1 AFL quality tall forward

I could just barely stomach (but not really) dropping Fogarty if we didn't bring back Mackay and looked instead to develop other players like Worrell.

But we did bring back Mackay. It's extremely short sighted of us. Suggests we don't really care that much about using the AFL side as a development tool for players like Fogarty

The AFL side is about 4 points and 4 points only. We've not made a single identifiable selection call that looks like it might cost us on paper in favour of getting a game into a kid. Kids get a go, but only as a last resort. Jack is back will be interesting. First he lambasts posters who disagree with us selecting our oldest possible side b3csuse we won a couple early. Then he lambasts posters for having a crack over the Lynch debacle because we're losing games and this is good. Which of the 2 totally contradictory slurs will he use for posters disagreeing with Dmac selection because they're both perfectly viable options.

McAdam has played 1 good quarter out of his last 12.

That's not slightly out of form... but horribly out of form!
And Fog has done better? This board bangs on about backing in talent, but scream for McAdam to be dropped at the first sign of poor form in his career so far. Look, I wouldn’t bring in Mackay personally, but we still brought in two other players that have played 5 and 1 game. We brought in RT off average sanfl form. With the exception of Worrell and those coming back from limited pre seasons, we have backed in as much youth as we can this season and it is only round 7. Some want Rowe dropped after 6 games when he plays one of the hardest positions to develop quickly in.

Mackay has only been selected when we have lost a couple of our smaller/medium defenders, and he will go straight back out when Brown and Hamill are fit. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sloane replaces Mackay next week.

My biggest issue besides wasting time on Dmac once again is that after a horrid run of games from Rowe, Mcpherson and Murphy keep their spot.

At least Lynch is gone and Berry is back.

Selecting Dmac makes my blood boil though.

I'm pretty happy with Nicks so far, but our selections and structures are still a mystery.

We constantly chop and change certain things, but then ignore others which are clearly not working.

Our forward line is either too tall, or too full of low impact smalls.

It is generally always unbalanced, and we rarely do anything to address it, just make adjustments which don't actually fix the problem.

Should be something like;

Tilthorpe / Tex
Fogarty / Sloane/Berry/Worrell (mid sized players)
Small / Fast (doesn't need to be a small)

We have 3 smalls who provide minimal impact, McAdam who provides minimal impact (I think we should try him in the Lynch role) - it's a dumb forward line structure.

Re Fog - we've mishandled him since we recruited him, and I've said that consistently.

We recruited him when we had Walker, Jenkins, McGovern and Lynch all in the side. If we had competent list management, the recruiting of Fogarty would've seen us take action at the time.

We lost two of them not by our own choice (well, Jenkins 50/50); but we've never had a clear development path and plan in mind for Fogarty.

Yes, it would be difficult for Fogarty to be as invisible as McAdam in recent weeks.

At least Fogarty competes and tries to involve himself in the game.

I like McAdam and hope he goes well, but if you want to highlight someone who doesn't bring consistent effort, he's the obvious one.

It's really quite disturbing that we are able to get a player like David Mackay to nearly 250 games, but can't seem to figure out what to do with Fogarty - a potential match winner.
Based on what is he a potential match winner, his one good game of AFL he's played? Or the constant average performances in the SANFL where he doesn't even demand selection?

A dumb forward line structure with the 4th most goals in the league in a rebuilding team that is missing their two best mids and key defender for most of the season? Riiiiiighhhttt. Our lowest goal tally is 11 against Sydney on a day where we kicked 22 behinds.

Nailed it.
We have the ability to score well but the rebound also makes us a sieve. You can’t blame the tall component on that.
I see constant player stats through games and the three smalls are near donuts. We need injection there to stop rebounding score.

Put McAdam on the HFF, drop one of the 3 smalls we're obsessed with.

Make him work hard, compete, and involve himself in the game.

It shouldn't be an either/or decision, but the seemingly shallow approach we take towards selection/development/structure makes it that way.

In time I think it will be. We just want to protect RT from the ruck, which means Berg kinda "has" to be there for the next year.

I'd go without Berg/Billy but it's a big risk

So the Fog midfield experiment appears to be over...

Do we hang onto him until Tex retires or look to trade?

Or are we just waiting until Filthy can play a few minutes each quarter in the ruck?
It's not over just continues in the SANFL, he needs to keep plugging away, injuries happen.

Disagree - we 100% should've taken him, and then chosen to trade Lynch/Jenkins/McGovern as a result, while they had maximum value.

Instead, we had a good trade for McGovern forced upon us, we paid for Jenkins to be traded off our list, and we've got an ineffectual Lynch.

As much as you criticise the forward structure, it’s still generating a lot of goals even after Tex’s purple patch.

So even with 2 of the 3 gone he still can't solidify a spot. How long before this is on Fogarty ???

FWIW I'd have given him another week.

I'm not sure why we even drafted him in the first place. Tex was only 27 at the time.
Because he was a highly rated junior?

Let's be honest. There have been plenty of opportunities to play him that we've refused to take

Traded out Jenkins.
Lynch has been injured
Lynch has been out of form
Walker has been injured (and usually still played)
Walker has been out of form
Himmelberg and Frampton both have looked awful at times.

There have been spots galore for him and we always seem to just bring him in then drop him the very second we can

Generally you should draft the best available in the first round. Where we may have failed massively is spending his first 2-3 years of development not giving him a defined role OUTSIDE of being a Tex replacement that we've shoehorned into the main side.

He's not performed well enough, it's simple.

I'd play him as the sub

He's performed about as well as countless players we've played anyway. Most recently, Frampton. In fact he's been better than Frampton.

We did try ridiculously to play him as a KPD.

Frampton, and to a lesser extent Berg are only there to keep our most valuable asset out of the ruck.
