Lions defender set to return, uncertainty over 'warhorse'
Brandon Starcevich could play his first game in three months this weekend, while uncertainty still surrounds the fitness of Brisbane ruck Oscar McInerney.
...
The premiership defender has steadily built up his training volume over the past month and will be considered for selection against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday if he gets through this week without a setback.
...
The ruck division is another conversation though, with McInerney missing the past month with what the club has called "soreness".
...
Speaking ahead of the team's training session on Tuesday morning, wingman Jarrod Berry hinted the 30-year-old could still be a little way off.
"'Big O' has been a warhorse for us for so long and is one of those guys that won't say how he's feeling," Berry said.
"He's going pretty good from what I can gather. I'm not fully across it in terms of exactly the thing that's going wrong.
"He's needed that deserved rest. He'll be back in the later part of the year and we're looking forward to having him back."
...
Starcevich might not be the only one back for the premier this week, with Sam Day (hamstring) and Darcy Gardiner (knee) also in line should they get through training strongly.

WOW! Great news there except for the big O, just be done with it and leave him out until at least after the bye now .... no mention of Kiddy though.

I think Starcevich will come straight back in if they deem him fit to go, he would have done a shite load of endurance work over the last month or so, who goes out for him I have no idea.

Sam Day and Darcy Gardiner probably being in line for a return will be a conundrum for Fagan and co. We have missed Sam Day more than I thought was possible, unluckily for Ty Gallop I think he is the one to make way if it happens, Gardiner plays VFL unless Day doesn't get up, even though if it was up to me I'd prefer Ty over Darcy, at least till the bye.

Only one of Day, Gardiner, or Gallop would play I think

In my opinion both Day and Starcevich should get 1 game in the VFL. More if the club think it is needed.
Starcevich just to get some confidence (headspace) as VFL way less pressure than AFL.
At present we need Day more than Starcevich. Long term Starcevich more than Day.
Also, we are doing okay without them but need both back for the remainder of the year, so no real hurry.

By game day Starcevich will not have played for 91 days
Day for 41 days. We know he has been injury prone for a lot of the last 4.5 years.
Oscar 34 days

Just for clarification Doedee has only been rested for one vfl game. I think somewhere it was posted that he missed two. So perhaps shouldn’t be completely discounted for a call up. Unlikely though it maybe.

I heard Doedee hasn’t been overly impressive in the VFL? I note that Fagan has historically played recruits (I’m having Tom as effectively a new recruit) fairly early even if VFL form maybe hasn’t warranted it.

Would be huge to have someone of his calibre down back.
Tom Doedee was reported as BOG in one of his most recent games, not sure if was the game I went to at BHA but he was very good in that one against the Suns.

Few weeks back Fagan was saying in a presser that he asked Doedee when he reckons he'll be ready to go and Doedee was giving it a bit more time.

He's been managed for two since his return from injury. Round 7 & Round 11

Both times he's been managed the club has said he's been playing well.
Round 7: Tom Doedee has been managed this weekend after four strong performances following his return from an ACL injury.
Round 11: Tom Doedee has been managed following a run of strong form at VFL level

On Starc having a vfl game I've always been of from the school of thought that you don't run champions at Murwillumbah when you can run them at Eagle Farm or Doomben. If Starc is fit passes fitness on Thursday and feels he is ready to roll bring him straight back.
His class down back has been missed Green, Daniels and Headgear always cause us problems he is a need personally... Froggy (all class ) leg speed being the issue and Zorko can be exploited by offensively minded quik smalls could be exposed be GWS Starc is a no brainer for mine.
Bring him and Day back we have Starc Motty and Noah to play the roles they are best suited for leaving Zorko and Froggy to play there roles.
Dainels/Noah
Green/ Starc
Heardgear/ Motty

Leaving Jasper on the wing moving Levi to sub will strengthen us considerably.

This is the game Doedee was judged BOG at least for the Lions

I was at that game in Melbourne and Doedee lined up on Calshear Dear who kicked a couple of goals on him from memory. He did win a number of contests but I wouldn’t say he was knocking the door down. The highlight for me were the steamed dim sims at half time. We got comprehensively rolled in the last quarter, but didn’t do enough in the third when we had the wind.

Time to go back to the old trusty set-up. We've seen them fall apart when the game is there to be won. Sam Day in should help things from a structure point of view.

Not against Gallop getting another game, but Day is 100% our guy until Smith is fit.

In the mix

There could be some big inclusions for Saturday’s match against Greater Western Sydney at the Gabba with Starcevich and Day just needing to pass tests to be considered. Starcevich has missed 12 matches but would be hard to overlook if available, while Day might be a tougher decision with debutant Ty Gallop impressive on debut. Oscar McInerney has been an emergency the past three weeks and would be in line for a recall if his body is close to 100 percent, while young forward Will McLachlan continues to apply pressure from the VFL. – Michael Whiting

Would love to see Fletch freed up to head back to the wing, one our best link up players and with that much range he is always a threat in the forward 50.
100% agree
Would be top 5 in our BnF at this stage i believe he has really developed as a player this year and has more improvement in him.
He and Suitcase will be giving silver service to our forwards for many more moons.
