Prediction Changes vs. Brisbane

We looked so flat.

It reminded me of the middle of 2015 when we ground to a halt after Burgo's 1000x1000's at training.
Unlikely to be that this year. Burgo has changed up the training a lot since then.

2014 was our best year since we won the flag and we had 4 'tall plodding defenders' that season. Clurey is more athletic than Carlile if anything.

Hombsch and Jonas are both at their best when they're not forced to play a KPD role. Jonas is at his best on mid-size opponents and Hombsch is at his best as a loose man.
Clurey has a big tank for a KP player as well

God Whoosha even identified it as a area they could exploit thats how blind the Alberton think tank is to how it isnt working, yes we were a highly ranked defence but in games with decent tall forwards weve been a bit exposed off the top off my head :
Reid 3 goals (i think)
Walker 4
Patton 5 or 6
Because we didnt have a tall or strong enough match up. Yes u can argue our team defence didnt get it done but does anyone honestly expect a team defence to hold out a GWS, Crows or Dogs come September all game?

No reason we cant drop Hartlett who isnt proving much move trengove back and play doogs forward hell if it comes to it drop trengove and Dougal rucks surely ?

I'd drop one of Hartlett or Pittard or possibly Broadbent to make a statement.
This group needs to get the message that this loss is unacceptable.

Everything else is shuffling deckchairs.

Essendon scored something like 18 goals from turn-overs, our team defence didn't have time to get back + Hombsch was exposed one out time and again + Hooker had a career best game.

I would first look at who burned the ball the most, then at what our +1 (Hartlett) was doing, then why we had Toumpas & Ah Chee only play
54% TOG. As an aside, that Hartlett needs to be 'talked to' to play a decent game, then delivers a putrid performance a week later stinks. He's been begging to be dropped for 2 ****ing years now.

Our SANFL form has been so strong over a number of weeks that we have options. Atley has been in the bests 3 weeks in a row, Drew has found an extra gear in the last few weeks, Howard has been superb forward and back. Neade has picked up in the last couple of weeks as well. We have options, time to bloody well use them. 4 changes minimum.

I know someone has already said it on the board, but I'd like to echo the opinion that selection night is more important to me than a win or loss this weekend.

Hartlett,Pittard, R Gray due to being bellow standard and the skip just for lacking in leading our team from the front when we needed it.
Houston,Atley,Young ins and Dougal to come in for Trengove who goes on the bench.
Everyone else on notice besides Ollie,Ebert,Ryder and Dix.
We aren't winning a grand final this year. Lets see who our future leaders are and who wants the ball when it counts.

They've been vocal about him not having the tank to play in the guts. Guts v Wing are two very different beasts. He pretty much played more of a wingman's role against Hawthorn, providing link play, dropping back into defence for the intercept and provide rebound, and drifting forward going inside 50. Was his best game of the year. Hartlett isn't a defender, so don't play him there.

I'm not even sure what this whole 'not having the tank to play in the guts' notion even means.

He was drafted as a midfielder and has played plenty of football at AFL level as a midfielder, albeit inconsistently and impacted by injury. Then one day someone decided that he was no longer a midfielder and that playing in the back line was his go. And here we are. Our highest ever draft pick, in his prime, on contract for several more years and presumably at a high pay rate, playing some sort of non descript role across half back that appears to have been invented for no other reason than to keep him in the team.

And we wonder why we can't break through the barrier to be anything other than a good ordinary side.

I notice Bassett around my way lately, must live close, he was having a meeting with DBJ last week, I'll make sure to pass on our thoughts if I see him this week.

"Essendon was a wake up call and I'm backing the boys in to redeem themselves..."

*ski over Brisbane*

"That's the response we were after....."

This club doesnt have the balls to drop someone like Hartlett.

I really feel as though the club thinks it's obligated to play him because of the contract he's on.

It's ridiculous especially when there are other options, coaches from the ole port days of yore would've dropped some of these underperformers umpteen times by now.

Nah, they weren't tired. They just looked like they weren't up for the fight when it was apparent they had an actual opponent to deal with. It was noticeable from as early as a couple of minutes in. That isn't fitness.

Good post Forza I agree who would be your four though?

Players have been getting picked on reputation and not performance for 2 years now. It's ****ing shit really.

I see Broadbent as being significantly better and more consistent than Hartlett over several years, but if you told me one of them had been dropped and to guess which one, i'd put my house on it being Broadbent.

How many times in these threads have we had posts along the lines of "i'd drop Hartlett/Westhoff but I don't think the coaches will"

"It felt pretty lonely out there...."

Have we fallen in the hole again? How does an entire team drop their bundle at any given round of any year?

Toumpas, Hartlett, Impey, Ah Chee in that order. I called for Hombsch to be dropped on Sat night but I've since cooled on that.

I reckon White comes in especially with Amon out.. we are plodding on the outside

I think Hombsch is a very good one on one defender who will struggle when placed on someone significantly bigger than him with the ball coming in fast and deep all day.
He had a mare but we set him up for it no doubt
