Changes vs Richmond

What the decision says is this :

Cordy and Redpath were obviously both neck and neck coming up to the starting block, Red got in by a whisker and didn't take his chance. Now it's Ayce's turn.

Negatives: less contested marking power up forward

Positives:

Help for minno

Means Boyd stays forward

Cordy has good ground skills

More height around the ground- we can place Cordy in packs around the ground without losing too much run.

He's not slow anymore people, not quick, but not slow

About the same for mine. Some real negatives are less pace/mobility, and forward nous.

I'll back him to out-ruck Griffiths 9/10

Red didn't use his superior pace/mobility though because he didn't apply much forward pressure. That's really all he offers over Ayce at this stage.

Didn't want to say it because I've already copped enough shit for my opinion on big Jack.

I'm a big supporter of Big Red and rated his game above others, but he needs to apply more forward pressure.

Happy to back the selectors on this decision. Believe Minson needs support too and we couldn't play 3 talls up forward this week without getting split open by Houli and Grigg.

Hate to say it but he didn't play any better of a game that any 201cm reasonably athletic player should play. The reason we're paying him that figure and the reason that he was the number 1 pick was that he could take marks over two players, and use his strength in contests and give out direct goal assists, not just be a tall bloke who can be good at the air and at ground level and get teammates into the game. A solid game nonetheless especially for a 19 year old, but at the end of the day a key forward taking 2 marks and 0 goal assists irrespective of the amount of blokes hanging off him is not "sensational" by any means.
We're not paying him for the present.

For a 19 year old key position player that came into our system with a low fitness base up against 2 defenders at a time, I thought he was exceptional.

He may have been the first pick in 2013 and on a hefty contract, but my expectations are low knowing how long it takes for these guys to settle into AFL footy.

But each to their own. He's obviously going to divide opinion over the next year or two.

Do you like the selection of Ayce though Fronk?

Or would you have gone with someone else?
I do like it. I had him at CHF in the round 1 team I named over the pre-season. I like his skills, decision making and mobility.

I hope he can be competitive in the air and keep rance honest.

I guess they didnt want Richmonds equivalent of Hurn running off Redpath at every opportunity.

Cordys job will be to take a tallish defender out of Boyd and Stringers way every time there is the sniff of a forward entry.

Wouldn't say that. Early days I wanted to keep Skipper a delist Minson. Haha.
A difference between you and some of the other people who don't like particular players though Mike is you would be extremely happy to be proven wrong!

You have no idea how much I want The Big Red Machine to come out and kick six, take a few contested grabs and pressure like a maniac in his next senior game. I won't say a bad word about him again.

Will he at least trade in his suit pants for some shorts?

Who's our forwards coach? I'd love to see Bazza impart some of his know how to Red and the Tomminator.

Cordy is not mobile. I don't know why people keeps saying this.

Red should of stayed in, if he took those marks he would of had a better game that Boyd. He led pretty well I thought, crashed a few packs. For rucking purposes only can I understand this change.

I don't like to see Boyd sit at FF all day. More often than not he will have a tough time against the number 1 defender. Need to let him up the ground a bit.

Redpath was bloody awful. Good to see Beveridge make the tough call to make the change, even though we won.
Once he wasn't marking the ball the WCE backs were way too nimble for big Jack. Just wasn't his sort of day. He was really good in NAB, though.
I think he doesn't have the experience yet to impose himself into the game when things not going so easy for his game.

Be good to see Cordy play a great game though... soft hands three and a half meters in the air.....yea

I have far more faith in Red than Ayce to clunk marks even with the preseason Ayce has had. I would have kept Red for another week. Having said that, I love the ruthlessness of the decision. He wasn't holding on to his grabs, he gets subbed, he gets dropped and he'll no doubt get things to work on in the twos. Cordy has shown good form and this decision says do or die to the boys. It also provides positive incentive for the guys in the 2s that if they can show their value they will get rewarded. As our depth increases the value of this stance (if it stays consistent) will increase also.
