I do agree with the sentiment that Hutchings should consider himself very, very lucky to remain in the team. Going into the forward 50, he continually butchers the ball by foot.
But he does a job. He went to Mitchell last week and curtailed him very effectively. Whether Hutchings is best 22 is an open question but his game against Hawthorn was an advertisement for retaining him, not dropping him.

Was not his best game by a long way.
Absolutely butchered near on all his possessions.
Had a DE of 22.3%

Yeah that's not good. Still, his job on Mitchell was pretty effective. Presumably they'll pick him to play Sydney as well. No shortage of jobs for him there.

100%, overrated asf on these boards
I don't think we'll notice him not playing tbh
We shouldn't notice him too much this week. I think long term he's best 22, not that overrated. Not playing at is best at the moment because he fumbles a lot and seems down on confidence but he has shown he's capable of good tough football.

I hope he goes to the WAFL and tears it up. Hutchings probably stays in the team for tagging purposes, he hasn't played that great offensively since he first replaced Sheed but the coaches must be valuing him as a tagger/blocker in the centre to help prioritise someone like Yeo getting first hands on it.

Sheed could do more with less, if he gets back to basics and just getting handballs out under pressure and knowing when to force a ball-up instead of throwing it on the boot, the outside game will follow with ease.

Long term with Ah Chee hopefully gaining touch as well as Venables and Ryan becoming fit to play up forward thus forcing him to the middle, there will be some players like Hutchings, Masten and Sheed who will need to have a serious strength/point of difference in their game or be challenged for spots. It's healthy.

Definitely, I think in the last few years when Priddis was in the middle,Yeo/Redden hadn't hit their straps and Gaff wasn't playing inside he looked good, but I think everyone around him has improved whilst he's stagnated. With Venebles and Ryan coming back in I think he'll definitely be on the chopping board. He doesn't offer anything that we don't already have in the side.

Settle down champ.

I'm all for Masten playing that role but I'm not convinced he's actually doing a great job of it. He's not very high volume or particularly damaging. If you're going to play a totally outside and uncontested style, those are the boxes you need to tick. At least when Gaff played that way, he was getting 30 touches. Masten is doing it and getting 20.

Maybe, I'm not sure he has to be the most damaging player in the team. He's shown before he's capable of racking up big numbers. It's a bit more about being there to play his role when needed and providing the run. He's not in our top 3 or 4 mids, so he doesn't have to be in there every game racking them up. Important point to consider is that they reckon with winning flags, that often your bottom 6 players in your 22 are as important as your top 6. So if he's doing alright in his role, let him go. And I think he's been pretty effective with his skills and placement this year

He doesn't. But he needs to be more damaging than he has been.

All the more reason to scrutinise him.

Fmd. Dom has just fallen into a couple of bad habits that he needs to iron out. He will be back making some people in this thread look daft in no time.
Agreed. The reaction is overblown.

He's had a rough month with injury, some mediocre form and now being dropped. But his numbers are still up, year on year.

Good man

It’s like your attributing our form to that........surely not.
Obviously not, but I think he's playing his role within the team well, and he has been more of an asset than a liability this year. What I meant was that team sports are subtle arts, if everyone is doing their part, it's the best way to success. You know the old expression, a champion team rather than a team of champions

Dom dropped will be good for him. He tends to get complacent and needs a rocket now and then.

Big fan of Petrol; would of liked to see him slot back in for masten.
