Yep as long as we have a shot at making the 8 we have to keep that mix of experience and youth. I have no doubt Lyons will be back in the coming weeks through a youth rotation.

although my Dream Team is happy that Crouch is back, very annoyed about Lyons being dropped.. Hopefully it is only a rest and he is back for the Richmond game!!

Resting Lyons is a joke, and if that is the 'reason,' - then it's an excuse.
We have the bye next week, he'll get a rest then.
When was the last time he did?
Porps a few years ago could do that.
Porps of now is a shadow of that player.
I want Porps back in form and in the team, but his form is woeful and his confidence is shot - you only have to watch him play and listen to him on the radio to know how lost he is at the moment.
I sincerely think we've crossed the line between showing faith in him, and sending him out there every week to embarrass himself.
We have the bye next week, he'll get a rest then.

I honestly think they have picked Porps purely for the sub. He has probably been the best sub we've had since the rule was introduced. Every time he has come on as the sub he has contributed.
This will be important against Sydney. Late in the game when bodies are tired we can bring on a hardened, experienced body to our advantage.

Honestly guys, if you have ever seen the boys the morning after a game you would never ask whether anyone needed a rest or not. Some of them can barely move - and I'm talking shuffle half a step at the time, all the while grimacing from the pain. It's a ****ing brutal sport on bodies, and while you might find older more mature bodies still feel the pain, they are more conditioned and therefore aren't as effected as much. The kids with their barely matured bodies really struggle. So while you think you know what's best for young athletes, I reckon our medical team, and our coaches that see them day in and day out would be far better placed to make a decision than you. That's not to say selection committees don't make mistakes, because clearly they do. All I'm saying is don't underestimate how brutal this game is on a young, immature body.

Most of us have played the game as some level Jenn; even amateurs is hard on your body, and that's got nothing on AFL (obviously); but there are also ~700 of them doing it a week, making extremely good money, with an enormous amount of resources dedicated purely to keeping them in prime condition.
Lyons is 21, he's not a kid, and he's not some skinny bean pole that's been smashed in marking contests.
We need to start embracing the potential of our kids - throw them into the fire and see whether they can hack it.
We shield them from big games so they don't get overwhelmed, we 'rest' them when they're in great form and have only played 3 games (with a bye to come); we give them bit part roles while senior players struggle to perform.
You make allowances as required, for guys like SMcK who might need a bit more time, but we need to teach them to embrace pressure and hardship, not shy away from it.
They aren't kids and they shouldn't be soft - get them battle hardened and I expect they'll thrive. If they don't, they probably wouldn't have taken us to a flag anyway.
Porps as a sub is great - but I'd drop him to the SANFL to see if he can get his mojo back, because he's too good and too valuable to be the sub unless there is no other choice.

I can't see who they'd bring in who has similar attributes to porps though. He wont get knocked off the ball, keeps his feet and has clean hands. Yes he is down on form but as we have seen a few games this year his experience in crunch times is invaluable. Id much rather have him as the sub over not at all against a side like Sydney.

Im actually not that disappointed that the club haven't ended a blokes career in order to appease a few fans. Porps is running out of time, no doubt about it, but Im not that unhappy with our handling of this one.

Who for? I think it will be McKay that falls out over Thommo. Thommo seems to be able to play through injury better. McKay has a hip problem which will affect his running and kicking penetration which are crucial to the type of player he is.

Whilst I agree that Porps is on his last chance, he has played his best games as sub. If we didn't make a late change last week, he probably would have been sub again.
If Porps was dropped and Lyons was named sub (Who else would be? Can't think of anyone), the reaction around here would be exactly the same, just 36 hours later.
Lyons will probably play anyway if Mackay misses. If he is sub, then I'll start raging.

Stiffy has been winding down for a year or more. Porps decline has been much more rapid. I dont think anyone really expected to see Porps in this predicament this year.

I don't want his career ended, and I think it's disingenious to suggest I do, by any stretch; I want his career extended by allowing him to find form in the SANFL.
I don't want Johncock to disappear either, but his card appears to have been marked - and his performances were never as bad as Porps as been this year.
Bring Stiffy in as the sub for a month, send Porps to the SANFL to see if we can get back the guy who kicked 3 goals in the Freo Final last year; not the guy who has kicked 5 goals in 9 games this year.
The sanfl update on the Crows site has mentioned Lyons and Wright might play on Monday if they don't come in for us. So it's obviously got nothing to do with being rested.

I'm a big fan of playing players that are in form. We are 5 and 5, we don't have the luxury like last year to give players 5-6 weeks to find form in th team.
We have seen our young guys ripping it up in the sanfl & then come into the Crows and they are able to make valuable contributions. After last weeks round of Sanfl, I thought Wright may have come back in after winning the game for Norths in the last qtr with his efforts. But then we select Crouch and Hendo who haven't done much at all in the local league.
We have been waiting 10 rounds for Porps to find form and he is no closer now than he was in round 1. Do we keep playing him until round 18-19 and then work out he is done. And then at the end of the season we try and find someone to take his spot ?
Obviously it is a bit of a balancing act putting the team together.
And why play Lyons in the forward lines for nearly the whole game when we know his position is in the middle ?
Jacobs gets 50 hitouts for the game but we only break even in the clearances where we have been poo all year.
