Changing teams you support

Growing up in Geelong my girlfriend was a Cats supporter (naturally) but upon turning 18 and hitting the local pubs, clubs, bars etc.. she soon discovered the 'true' colours of many of the Geelong players. She was so disheartened by their behaviour she simply couldn't follow them anymore and switched to Melbourne. Though I do make fun of the fact she switched clubs not long before Geelong's era of dominance began I can understand and respect 100% her reasons in doing so. As good a reason as any I believe.

PS I'd swear I changed my signature...must revisit that pronto.

Fair enough I suppose but let her know not to get near the Melbourne players on the piss...I'm sure most teams have less than desirable young lads when they hit the town

Just thought I would start a thread for people to share their reasons behind changing teams you support. Whether it be because a team gained an AFL licence in your area, your old team folded or whether you jumped on a bandwagon.

I changed teams when I was 11. I barracked for Fitzroy (thanks to my mother) before switching to the Pies. Reason being my Grade 6 teacher was a former Collingwood trainer, and my dad's friend was the chief statistician for the Pies. As a result I managed to get into the rooms after a couple of games and was in awe. Conveniently it was 1989 so I didn't have to wait very long for a premiership (unlike most Pies supporters!).

Doesn't make my desperation to see another one any less than anyone else though!

I was an Essendon supporter until I was 9, dad's influence, and changed when I was old enough to make my own choice. I wouldn't consider changing now, because one you have made a conscious choice to change teams you should stick by it.

I moved to Sydney from Perth and actually went to the '92 GF and cheered wildly for the Eagles.

Used to go to Swans games coz I loved my footy. After a while, I realised I had much more emotional attachment to Kelly, Plugger and the Swans than I did to the Eagles (which was basically a team created in the late 80s in a laboratory anyway), and so in order to pass the Lamont Test started officially following the Swans.

Now the Eagles are probably my most hated team.

The Claremont Tigers are, and will always remain, my #1 team however.

A South Fremantle supporter since i can first remember - will be until i die. And thats Sth Freo Bulldogs - not that Footscray rabble that bring continual disgrace to the Bulldog name.

Supported Geelong in the VFL/AFL before Freo was formed. Was working in Melb during the 1992-94 era and still supported Cats - Weagles were a state side with no soul/backbone (WCE were and still are the "look at me, wannabee bad boy, man about town, buy success" brigade).

Supported Freo ever since formation and will til my death.


We have some close family friends that used to support WCE but the drug era did it for them and, as they had children too, they wanted nothing further to do with that club. They are die-hard supporters of their WAFL clubs and now just follow AFL generally, with their kids keen Freo supporters.

Disagree. My old man is a Blue and I would argue our footy discussions throughout our lives have been so much richer. They are so much better when you have two different opinions.

I remember travelling to Melbourne most seasons in the early 90s to sit in the Princes Park social club in tears while Carlton dished out yet another drubbing to Hawthorn. Due to an Uncle who was the club doc, I would then have the awful 'privilege' of going into the rooms and meeting Bradley, Kernahan, SOS etc etc. Urgh!

Still, I look back on those days as great childhood experiences and am a little bit proud I never considered switching. I never met Dermie, Dunstall or Langford....

If I have a son one day, he can go for who he likes although I would almost actively encourage him to barrack for anyone but the Hawks... I'd probably draw the line at the Blues though, god I hate them!

Kouta and Christou used to get runners out during games to give them score updates on Collingwood games, such was their passion for the Magpies.

Massive Collingwood fans.

Wayne Harmes was (and still is) a Richmond supporter.

David Schwarz was (and still is) a card carrying Hawthorn member.

I've dug up this old thread just to put a point out there - anyone who supports GWS or GCS has more than likely 'changed teams'. If this is you, you are an undeniable scumbag. I remember reading on the GWS board a year or so back, why do you barrack for GWS. Someone said 'oh we used to barrack for Essendon (I think it was) but then this team got created and my wife and I decided this was our chance to get in on the ground floor on something new!'. WTF????? Anyone who does this cannot be a real football supporter. Just a complete WTF @ people who team swap especially to such souless outfits. For them alliegience is a temporary thing. LOL. Oh and before anyone asks I was 9 when the Eagles formed in 87 and they are my only team.

Sometimes young people pick a team without really having a strong passion or emotional connection with that team. Maybe a lot of kids at school support that team or their father has pressured them to pick his team. There could be other reasons.

That's probably true.

For me, I started supporting Essendon at some point in 2006 at the age of 8. My cousin and uncle supported them so I felt that I had an emotional attachment before even watching them play.

I watched about 10 games before seeing my first win later in the season, and I actually think that sitting through all those losses (some of them being quite close), in anticipation of seeing that first win, greatly strengthened my emotional ties to Essendon
