So what? Has done that before every final and every post-bye game only to look like a complete fool when we perform miserably. Scott feeling confident means F-all...I reckon Scott is sounding confident. AFL360 tonight.

So true. The spotlight that must be on on Scott in terms of this year's finals performances needs to turn into a blistering *blowtorch* if we underperform from a top four position for a fifth timeGood luck with Kelly gone and a bunch of players either retiring or moving another year into their 30s.
I'd rather he focus on winning a GF this year from the position he's put them in. At the end of 2014, after having blown another top 4 finish and gone out in straight sets, he also boldly proclaimed that Geelong's best was still better than the grand finalists'. The following year, Geelong did not make finals at all. It's a constant cycle of underselling the here and now, anticipating failure, but then selling hope for the future to keep people buying in. No one at the club or outside it should care about next year right now. Flags don't come often, and now we have another shot at one. Next year we could be bottom four for what anyone knows. We've blown four top 4 finishes under him; let's see if the fifth yields anything more. He's here pumping people up for his sixth look at it since 2011 already, though. At what point should we actually expect a top 4 finish to pay off?
"A couple of things I'm really confident in; I think we'll be a better team next year than we are this year and I think we're really well prepared to have a good crack at it this year.Whether other people choose to define us by what happens over the next month is their choice.
But I think we'll look back and reflect on what we actually get as opposed to spending too much time trying to forecast what's going to happen.
We're trying to live in the moment a little bit more than that."
???
Mixed message from Chris Scott here; on the one hand he speaks of the club 'trying to live in the moment' and yet he can't help but forecast that 'we'll be a better team next year'.
I don't like it. Giving himself a bit of a loophole to sneak through if the club fails to impress (again) this September.
I can almost hear him saying it now: "I always thought we'd play our best football in 2020 as opposed to 2019."
Also, quick reality check Chris: yes, the club will be defined by what happens over the next month; people will 'choose' to do that.

Always enjoy your perceptions on the game, Cursed Cat, but I don't see the problem here.
As is the nature of journalism, the article does not reveal the context of the discussion, i.e., what Scott was aked, and so what he was responding to. He may have been asked how he thought the list looked 'going forward', or whether he was under pressure given past finals. So, in other words, he may have been invited to respond in this manner.
And even if this wasn't the context, his statement seems fine. He is basically saying 'we are in the running this year'. No coach is going to offer more than that going into a finals series. No AFL coach would even go so far as saying 'I think we're a great chance to win the flag.' If he did show that level of confidence he would be derided on here for his arrogance. So he can't win there. He also states that we are in good shape for next year and he thinks the side will improve. Every single coach will say this unless they are beginning a rebuild, which he isn't. So all pretty standard so far. Then he says that the club will asses this year's finals performance 'on what we actually get', that is, once the team's final performances have actually occurred. He infers that how the performances are assessed over the next month is a matter for the club; others will asses it in their own way. This seems a statement of fact, really. The bit about being 'in the moment' is just the kind of pseudo-zen-corporate-gibberish that every club rolls out. It's cause for celebration coming out of Buckley's mouth, and cause for laceration when coming out of Scott's.
Willing to concede in relation to the context of Scott's response, Nankervis Bros; however even if invited to speculate as to the health of the list in 2020 I still wasn't particularly comfortable with his response - sounded suspiciously like a rationalisation to me; not very on-script for an AFL coach to be looking beyond 'this week', particularly when there is a final to be played - and to be looking as far ahead as next year is quite an unusual bit of forecasting at this time of year.
The bit about 'being in the moment' rang particularly hollow given CS already has an eye on the team's prospects in 2020.
Still; you are right that perhaps he was cornered into his response by an unusually cunning journalist.
As to comparing reactions if Buckley had said the same thing; personally I barely pay any attention to what an opposition coach says so it is moot (to me) really - the words of the head coach of the club I support is all I really care about, and if I'd heard Buckley speculating as to his team's improvement in 2020 I'm not even sure how I'd react.
I'm not particularly strident on this matter, but the quotes did give me pause.
Anyway; if we win on Friday who cares what was said in the lead-up, if we lose though the last thing I want to hear about from Chris Scott is how the club is in great shape for 2020 ..
Haven’t heard this tone from him before. He was very relaxed, not spinning, but dripping with confidence.
game over for the pro Scott crowd
I doubt it. Much as we keep seeing the same old crap from Scott, we'll be seeing the same old excuses from them here after this.game over for the pro Scott crowd

Can I quote that as I love this post... Chris Scott you are a joke, from when you did a late change with Stanley out and not recognise ruck.... There would be more then 60% of cat's fans don't like you as coach..... I'm sorry Scott you have to go....Sack the useless coward, pathetic coach when it matters most, won’t go anywhere with him at the helm.
What’s the record now?
