What do you expect then? If he comes out and says he expects a flag, he will get ridiculed.

I expect to be better than last year, but that's it. Expecting us to finish top four borders on lunacy.

Low key build up. Very different to last year. Thats a good thing.

Obviously you don't want him saying we will win the premiership. But a little enthusiasm would be nice. Something along the lines of "we're quietly confident heading into round 1, we've made improvements to key areas etc."

Find out on Sunday.

I expect him to be more upbeat than that. If you guys reckon "We're not expecting too much" is okay after last years showing then I'm gunna have to disagree. We've accepted mediocrity for too long.
Cheers.

I expect him to be upbeat, I know where you are coming from.

But we aren't a premiership threat, are we?

Yep! I agree with 'Partridge'. I just thought 'Bomber's' words sounded a bit defeatist.

Laidley said " We were pretty ordinary last year and we've made a real focus to thrive rather than survive" Now that is upbeat and whilst it's very general it gives the Kanga supporters something to chew on.

And I'd be really p.....d-off if we finished below them.
Cheers.

Pretty good summation there Partridge, I would have expected better also, especially when he has been told to show more enthusiasm.

Maybe it is more behind closed doors. I know from a few people he is revving them up, but not so much as last year, not giving them the all or nothing approach.

This obviously came down like a lead fart last year, still he could have given a bit of a lifting statement.

I actually do agree that it does sound a little depressing, and I would have rather have seen a response such as the one Partridge gave. However, I don't think we are a premiership threat. We can't be. That's why it is ludicrous for people to tip us for a top four position at the start of this season.

But, back to Bomber, he has never been a great media performer anyway.

I think that it is better to underestimate and be quiety confident than have a repeat of the fiasco last year where we grossly underperformed after the early hype. I think he has learnt that lesson. If he said "Yep top 3 bank on it" and then we lost the first four games, we would all be calling for his head - wouldnt we?

less expectation - less pressure

There will be pressure on us regardless though, I think.

No one is suggesting he should be making outlandish claims like we'll make the top 3 or win the flag. Clearly that would be dumb.

Just be positive and upbeat. I bet if Frank Costa was asked he'd be saying something like - if we don't make the top 8 I'd be bitterly disappointed. Let's rise above mediocrity in word and deed.

Don't tell the media anything and keep it among the team... That's the way to go Bomber :thumbsu:

Seriously, why would Bomber tell the media anything that will just build pressure on his side, espeically when the media were calling for his blood, screw the media, let's just get a couple of wins early and see how they go

He doesnt have the range of emotions....full stop!
When the cats get lose badly....nothin.....when they win....nothin......

I love Malthouse going ape in the coaches box....its satisfying somehow, the passion bordering on insanity...

The media is one way that the club communicates with its members. Its a way of building the membership base and enhancing the brand. If you listened to 'Cookie' you'll know he is keen to be more media friendly this year. Bomber has said he will be too.

It's not putting pressure on to be realistically optimistic. Saying publicly "We're not expecting too much" let's the players off the hook.
Cheers

Whinge, whinge. Who cares what Bomber says at this stage of the year? He knows his career is on the line, as do many of the players on the list. Thompson would know that being 'better than last year' is not going to keep him his job.

They know they are capable of winning the flag. I know they are capable of winning the flag... Comments like this from Bomber are just going to guarantee that the media will stay off our case. The less media attention and hype, the better as far as I'm concerned. It is obvious that nobody rates our chances, and that is the way I like it. We will sneak under their radars and win the flag.

Do you expect him to jump up and down and sing a song about how we will win the flag this year? As for those talking up the media skills of such awesome coaches as Malthouse and Laidley... I would rather have Thompson than either of these hacks.
